I was lucky enough to be in attendance on Saturday and I must say that I would have taken "1-0 to the Arsenal" before kick-off. Overall, we should have killed the game off in the 2nd half with the chances we had and if we were playing a better side than Wigan with the chances they had we would have been punished.
But, since Cesc's appointment as captain, 3 games, 3 wins and 1 goal conceded (and we all know Djourou's OG was unlucky), so as I said in my previous article, we’re starting to get the basics right in defence, even if it means we sacrifice our overall play to get the result. And if it brings us trophies then long may it continue. We rode our luck a little bit but were starting to get the lucky breaks that have deserted us for so long. Last season we would have lost this game.
I was absolutely disgusted at the abuse Eboue got from some of our fans from when he came on till when he came off. What those people need to remember is that the man's just come back from 6 weeks out with a knee injury so he’s going to a bit rusty and Nasri's injury forced him into action earlier than the boss wanted to use him. He couldn’t get into the game, was off the pace and gave the ball away but you can’t come back from that amount of time and just slot in straight away. After all the players are only human.
What’s going to happen when Eduardo comes back into action and he does the same? OK, his injury was career-threatening but would you subject him to the same treatment if he missed open goals or misplaced a pass? Or the same with Rosicky? What kind of encouragement is that? Most fans like myself just clapped when Eboue came off and that’s what we should be doing, like when Bendtner came off after a shocker against Villa a few weeks back - he got an ovation and that was the end of it. Yes us fans pay the money and can say what we like to a certain extent but I think there’s a limit. If Eboue scores against Porto in midweek or Boro on Saturday, will you boo him then?
What is pleasing now is that the players are smiling a lot more and their body language is better than it was a month ago. They seem to be wanting to play for the boss and for Cesc. We have a really tough Xmas period coming up and we have to keep playing how we are now and restrict teams from creating chances. Even if were grinding out results, if the other 3 teams above us drop points then we can be in an excellent position to pounce. Even if we don’t win the Premiership, but finish second at least we won’t have to play a qualifier which I think is costing us physically each year. So it’s the FA Cup or the Champions League or both. That would really silence the critics.
