Don’t Turn Eboue Into A Martyr

The Boo-ers were not only so-called ‘new’ fans, but they gave the media the opportunity to lay into the club once more

Don’t Turn Eboue Into A Martyr

Bored of Eboue pics? We are. So here’s another African export for variety.

The fiasco surround Eboue's exit from the E******s has resulted in even more anti-Arsenal nonsense from the media with some of it even being written by Arsenal fans.

Arsenal has always been represented badly by pundits, commentators, writers, journalists and other fans. An example of anti-Arsenal attitudes in the media would be whenever we have a player sent off. What's the first thing you hear by the commentator? "And that's the ??th time that a player has been sent off during Arsene Wenger's reign as manager". What other club manager has such a useless and unhelpful statistic thrown at them when they have a player dismissed? Also, if we rough a team up we get accused of being "typical dirty Arsenal" with their bad disciplinary record. Yet if we don't stand up to a team physically we get the "typical Arsenal can't handle the tackling". It is all anti-Arsenal propaganda dressed up as analysis. The same has happened with discussion on Eboue's exit against Wigan.

His substitution has led to even more anti-Arsenal writing under the guise of support for Arsene Wenger and the player himself. Dozens of writers wrote about the "howls of derision" and called it a disgrace that the fans booed their own player. The media continues to insult Arsenal but are now taking the high moral ground. They still get their Arsenal dig in but have fooled Arsenal fans into thinking it is now okay to do so and have even gotten support for it.

Then Arsenal fans and writers got in on the act and repeated to the point of distraction about how they were ashamed, embarrassed and angry at the treatment Eboue received. This article pondered whether Eduardo will get the same treatment if he misses a shot?” Of course not and the reason is simple. Eboue got booed because fans are sick to death of his antics - his petulance; his diving; his on-his-knees-praying pleading for justice from the referee; his average and mostly ineffective performances.

All of this culminated in the Arsenal fans seizing a (justified) opportunity to tell the manager what they thought of this player. They did it in a way which is perfectly within their rights. There have been no reports of abuse, spitting etc. The fans spoke out in the only way they know it will get noticed. The finger has been pointed at 'new corporate fans' but this is a lazy excuse. The majority of fans there must be genuine Arsenal supporters so to blame it on these phantom fans demanding gorgeous football is unfair.

There have been many words written about poor Eboue - what if his family were there, his confidence is shattered, his tears were streaming down his face. Were these the same writers who derided and hissed at Wenger's suggestion that Eboue was the ‘new Ray Parlour’? Football fans have short memories.

I want Eboue to play well all the time (and I have defended him in the past) but with his performances both on the ball and off it sometimes it can be more than difficult. Despite his popularity with the players this has, sadly, not transferred to the fans and now the fans have let the team know what is on their minds. If he bounces back it will be great. If he doesn’t - will he be missed? It’s not nice to heavily criticise an Arsenal player but this time there is a history of feeling towards him. So, please do not turn him into a martyr. And please do not blame the fans on what's wrong with the game today.
