As I write, Sky Sports break the news that we have all feared. Cesc Fabregas, our captain and the fulcrum of our team has been ruled out for at least four months with a partial rupture to the medial knee ligaments. This effectively means he’s out until the end of April and won’t have time to regain fitness and form before the end of the season.
This season our inconsistency has made the campaign so far one of the, if not the, worst under Arsène. However, the inconsistency of the other three ‘Big Four’ teams means we are still in the title race. With 20 games left to play, I feel we need to gain 50 points. As improbable as this may seem, it is something we are capable of if we address our problems.
Here is my assessment of our current squad: Almunia is a very good goalkeeper but he lacks the presence to be great. Lehmann dominated his area and imposed himself upon strikers. I feel Fabianski can also do this and will be a great keeper but Manuel is good enough to do the job until he is ready. I think we have a good selection of centrebacks in Gallas, Toure, Djourou and Senderos. I feel we shouldn’t have signed Silvestre (especially from our rivals) and let Senderos go out on loan but hopefully he’ll come back a better player. I think the current centreback partnership of Gallas and Djourou works well unlike that of Gallas and Toure. Our fullbacks are quality but need to improve their final ball and Clichy needs to cut out the silly mistakes.
Our midfield needs sorting. In the January transfer window we must sign a winger. With Ro-sicky permanently injured and Theo out until February we cannot rely on Denilson, Diaby, Eboue etc being makeshift wingers. With nobody making Flamini’s position their own, I feel we may need to buy a centre midfielder and maybe also a replacement for Cesc, if Arsène doesn’t think Ramsey is ready. Therefore, I feel we need two maybe three players. I think we have good strength and depth upfront especially with Eddie’s return and Vela having had half a season to settle.
I think the booing of Eboue was wrong. I know he hasn’t exactly made himself a fans’ favourite with all his acting and his ineffectiveness as a winger but think back to the Champions League run to the final. He was part of the record breaking defence and was very effective going forward. Most of us didn’t understand the signing of Sagna when it seemed like Eboue had made that position his own. We are supporters (support being the key word) and we should support our players especially when they are just playing badly having coming back from injury and playing out of position but still not moaning a la Cashley. Booing our own players is just not the Arsenal Way.
There is uncertainty in the boardroom with respect to Lady Nina Bracewell-Smith’s shares but with Ivan Gazidis taking over the post as CEO in the new year, hopefully he can bring his wealth of experience to give us the edge in player transfer and contract negotiations, which we haven’t had since the departure of David Dein. Is this the real reason we haven’t signed many players since his departure? His other main role will be to sort out Highbury Square.
I have always been an Arsèneist (pardon the pun). Boro Primorac (his right-hand man) “is an encyclopaedia of world football," according to Arsenal great and former goalkeeping coach Bob Wilson. "Name a player and he'll know his height, weight and which foot he favours. He watches tape after tape on football, channel after channel.” Arsène, Boro and the extensive scouting network watch countless players all over the world and only a handful are shortlisted from which maybe one or two are lucky to be signed. Arsène then sees these players every day in training and knows their ability and potential yet we are so quick to write them off. Think of all the players that we have written off in the past that have gone on to be Arsenal greats. That is the reason I am more reserved in my criticism. He has built great sides before and he will do it again.
As a club; the board, the staff, the players and us fans can’t act in a rash manner. We must do it the right way - The Arsenal Way.
