Arsenal’s three-tiered support

As 2008 is no longer with us, neither will some fans be if the team continues to decline

Arsenal’s three-tiered support

Milan away – highpoint of last year

High points in 2008 are hard to come by. For me it was Milan, simply because we battered them and it was a good SOLID performance - something that has been sorely lacking throughout the year as a whole. Wins against Utd and Chelski have also been welcome, but even these wins were, to be honest, a little lucky.

For me though the biggest eye opener this year has been the way the club and the fans has changed as a whole. The club’s communication with the fans is at an all time low. No one knows why half the board upped and left. And we await a real explanation. Are they going to sell us out to the Russian? These are uncertain times for the club’s ownership.

What is really troubling me at the moment though is the fans. We now have a three tier fan-base.

1) The 30,000 regular hard-core true 100% supporters from Highbury (RIP)

2) The 10-15,000 part-time supporters. Come along now, because they never stood a chance of getting into Highbury, but are more than welcome as long as they stick by the team as the 30,000 do,

3) 10-15,000 cling-ons, corporates, and glory hunters. Come to football because it’s fashionable, but now the credit crunch is hitting and the team is struggling compared to 2004, they would rather boo the players, because they believe they have paid for that right. Tossers!

I do believe we are now entering a rocky period for the team. We have a less than solid defence, weak midfield, and a strike force that is too hit and miss (Adebayor was a total disgrace against Pompey). Now more than ever the fans need to stick with it. Grin and bear it. The Premier League is now a write off. Finishing fourth is now the target. But I still believe we have a decent crack at the Champions League and the cup.

Can the real 60,000 please stand up for the team in 2009? The 10-15,000, can you please p*ss off and watch Liverpool/Man Utd/Chelski and pretend to know what you are talking about in your local Yates or Wetherspoons while sinking pints of flat Carlsberg... you knob-heads.
