Given the hugely negative approach Bolton chose to take on Saturday, why did “Elbows” Davies’ entirely predictable comments get so much airtime?
How many times did he throw himself to the floor when Gael “Hitman” Clichy beat him to a header? This was clear and repeated cheating. Yet of course both he and the consummate managerial survivor Megson both know that lazy journalists will find it far easier to go back to their pre-built story templates to produce copy decrying Arsenal than to point out the utter lack of ambition that Bolton brought to the table.
The journalists don’t seek to ask just what it is that Elbows is doing to justify what must be by any measure a huge salary. In what other major league would someone of such limited abilities and ambition remain unquestioned as to both approach and ability? Why do the media not point out that Elbows is, after all, third in the Carling Opta “Bad Boy” statistics behind such paragons of virtue as Cattermole, who wasn’t even good enough for ‘Boro, and the circus freak Fellaini? Far easier not to disturb those pre-written match report templates and get down the pub (if they managed to leave it to watch the game at all).
So lets look at those match stats.
Goal attempts – Arsenal 19 Bolton 2
Corners – Arsenal 5 Bolton 0
Possession % - Arsenal 76 Bolton 24.
Yet all we see in the papers is a talentless hoofer’s uncontested claims of Arsenal diving and cheating. Of course these ridiculous comments will all manage to take the focus away from the Bolton manager and his team’s shocking lack of ambition and talent which I suspect is the real point. Nice try, Elbows. But sorry, you’ve been rumbled.
