Many people will remember a situation in the first season at the new stadium when violence threatened to break out over the draping of a particular flag relevant to the dispute between Greece and Turkey over Cyprus.
That isn’t a debate I wish to start again, suffice it to say that the flag in question was not actually the flag of a recognized nation state (according to the United Nations). However, Keith Edelman, in all his wisdom, decreed that no national flag of any nation, including England, could be subsequently seen at the stadium.
Talk about using a sledgehammer to crack a nut. So the stadium rules are not enforced when football matches such as Brazil v Italy are played, when Bruce Springsteen plays a rock concert, in the opposition section at Champions League matches and, you can bet your life, when Cardiff turn up on Monday evening.
Do you think the stewards are going to go into the Cardiff section and start removing people’s Welsh flags? Of course not.
Edelman’s gone. The man is history, and the same should apply for his ridiculous rule that I am certain no-one outside Edelman’s office thought was a good idea. It’s typical killjoy Edelman. The man had about as much feeling for the game as Margaret Thatcher, so let’s put his contribution to Arsenal’s matchday culture where it belongs in the dustbin.
If you have a national flag that you have wanted to bring to a match since the ban, bring it on Monday. If enough people do this, the club are in a very weak position regards taking punitive action and my guess is that now the people who work at the stadium no longer have to report to Keith Edelman, they won’t bother enforcing his ridiculous rule.
The Cardiff fans will be waving their Welsh flags. If a steward says anything to you tell them that you will abide by the rules if they are consistently enforced in all sections of the ground. Ask for their name and number if they persist and we will name and shame them online following the game. If you can get a photo of the perpetrator, even better. But don’t get ejected. We don’t want any martyrs, just enough evidence to name and shame and get some publicity in the national press and in Parliament over this farcical issue.
‘Just doing my job’? Listen stewards, Edelman’s gone. No one gives a damn about this stupid rule anymore so it can be quietly forgotten about. You are hardly going to get hauled over the coals for turning a blind eye to one departed idiot’s farcical regulation. You think you will be sacked? The club are crying out for stewards as the constant turnover of matchday staff clearly demonstrates.
Back to the fans, the people that should really matter. As has been said here - If we really want to push this issue with the club then now is the time to stand up and be counted.
Flags out for the lads on Monday night! (Best smuggle them in though!)
