Of flags and abuse for opposition players

Horseface: Getting abuse is all part of the job

The most recent editorial about flags in Ashburton Grove definitely made a good point. Owing to the rich supporting cultures of both Italy and Brazil, the club's staff must have known that trying to ban flags, banners, etc would have been met with intense opposition by both countries’ FA's and supporters groups alike - and rightly so. But now that Edelman is no longer at the club the board should definitely review their stance on flags both in and around the ground as a whole.

Anyone who went to the Reading game last year will remember those weird pseudo-rattle things they laid out on every seat where you could either use it as a rattle substitute or unfold it. Whilst it was verging on the wrong side of ridiculous, at least the intent behind them was a small step in the right direction. Other clubs have flags, banners, etc and it does bring something to the atmosphere without imposing on their Health and Safety regulations. As great as it is to have Brazil v Italy, Bruce Springsteen and others help pay off the stadium debt, it is still our ground first and foremost.

Another step in the right direction would be to allow stewards to have a sense of humour and inform them that during a football match, supporters ARE allowed to make some noise. Either that or sack stewards who behave like this one does whenever an opposition player who fans might not like very much is nearby.

This kind of stewarding is ridiculous, telling fans to pipe down. The likes of Ashley Cole and Ruud Van Nistelrooy are paid good money to be able to handle a few taunts and jeers. Cole was intensely booed by Spurs, United and Chelsea fans when he was still seen as an Arsenal man (and boy) so it's not as if it was new to him. Even if he isn't one of the most mentally gifted people around, he still knows that getting abuse from opposition fans is part of his job.

And what about a little more external decoration? The art deco exterior of Highbury was a great look and made it stand out rather than looking like just another clone stadium with a couple of big stick-on crests. Would a few club-related flags hanging down from the stadium do much harm? A few statues of Arsenal legends here and there wouldn't go amiss either. The cannons and the big lettering are OK but it does have that 'could be better' look about it. Now obviously, this is just my opinion and you all have a right to disagree if you choose. It's just as well the website's not regulated by one of the club's stewards...
