Arsenal’s £4 cheeseburger: My defence

Let’s leave the debate about whether the fast food could produce a more intelligent autobiography than Cashley and get down to the economics of the controversial comestible.

Arsenal’s £4 cheeseburger: My defence

Due to UK obscenity laws we have a policy on hamburger shots. So here’s an Arsenal bagel.

First, let me say that I have NEVER been to any stadium or event venue and worried one jot about the standard or pricing of food and beverages.

However this issue has raised a few comments from supporters as we settle into the new ground so thought I would enlighten those interested (and appalled) about the deal Arsenal signed with Delaware North 18 months ago.

1. It is a 20 year exclusive deal.

2. Delaware have paid £10m towards the fit out of the catering outlets and a further £5m is payable in the future. So, this contribution has helped with the funding of Arsenal's stadium costs.

3. Delaware will pay Arsenal an annual catering rights fee based on an agreed percentage (up to a maximum of 21%) of total catering revenues at the stadium.

4. Delaware also have an exclusive deal at Wembley.

5. Delaware catered at Highbury last season but on a fixed management fee basis.

On the basis that Delaware have paid Arsenal upfront for this contract, the revenue impact for Arsenal on an annual basis going forward is minimal which will undoubtedly impact on Arsenal’s view on any catering related issues that may be raised.

Delaware North are big in the US and the Arsenal and Wembley deals are its breakthrough into the UK market
