Fantastic performance on Monday night. Ok, Cardiff weren’t at their best, but it’s the result that people will remember as well as Eddie’s triumphant return.
I’m so happy for him, he’s like a new signing again. Hopefully he’s what’s needed to kick-start our race for 4th place. I know it’s early days yet but his performance last night looked like he'd never been away.
Also we still have Theo, Cesc, and Tomas to come back along with Arshavin. With Ade out for the next few weeks I think Wenger will have to use Eduardo a bit more than he’d like to but our reputation and qualification for the Champions League are on the line here.
We have a very good chance of FA Cup glory this year, no disrespect to the championship teams but as we play the next two rounds at home, you have to fancy us to make the semis and possibly the final. If we finish with the FA Cup this season won’t be a total failure.
However I still think there is major work to be done over the summer regarding the squad. He cannot let any more players go without getting ADEQUATE replacements in first. A defensive midfielder and a centre back are a must even if it’s as cover. All these names of top players keep getting linked with us yet not signing has got me starting to question the club’s transfer policy. If they think they can get away with relying on youth to win trophies, then it’s not going to work and it hasn’t worked since 2005.
It’s not too late to change this way of thinking, and it will keep both the young and experienced players on their toes. Lack of competition for places is one reason why some of the young players’ commitment hasn’t been what it should be in the last few months. That is why Man United have been so successful over the last couple of years. They’ve got cover all over the pitch, like we used to have with the likes of Edu, Luznhy, Vivas, Grimandi, Suker etc who when they came in to the side just got on with the job.
I heard one fan on the train home from the West Ham debacle a couple of weeks ago and he made a suggestion that Wenger should experiment with a few players’ positions, and it got me thinking. What he suggested was the Clichy and Sagna could push up to left and right midfield and play young Gibbs at left back and Armand Traore at right-back - should we ever be deprived of Nasri , Ramsey and Rosicky. I would also like to see Kolo play in midfield a bit more, as that’s his natural position and we'd be better for it in the long run.
Well, it’s Sunderland up next, here’s hoping.
