‘Fickle cretinism’ at full-time v Fulham

I felt ashamed to call myself an Arsenal supporter

Arsenal fans: Sing up or shut up, but boo-ing will achieve nothing

I have been a season ticket holder for 12 years, half my life, and have never questioned my commitment to the cause of my team, the Arsenal. During the Fulham game something changed, I felt ashamed to call myself an Arsenal supporter. The team didn't play well, we were the worst team on the day and didn't deserve any more than the fourth consecutive 0-0 league draw we endured on Saturday.

I'll admit that I'm as frustrated as any fan at our inability to convert numerous craftily created yet ultimately fruitless attacks. What I find infinitely more frustrating, maddening and alienating are the 'fans'. I have no real problem with people who go to games and choose not to chant, I know many supporters who aren't that vocal but I would never question their love for the club.

However, when the boos heard at the final whistle are louder than any chant heard throughout the ninety minutes I feel sick. It's bad enough when the predictably myopic attendance is announced, worse when the already sporadic empty seats increase dramatically 15 minutes before time but the booing is fickle cretinism at its best.

The team has nine clean sheets in its last twelve games, this would normally be considered an excellent record but for the fact that Kevin Davies’ Bolton have scored more goals in that time. The problem the team has at the moment is clearly a lack of confidence in front of goal, but the crowd booing the team, rather than getting behind them, is only going to add to the problem so it is my opinion that any 'fan' who boos the team cannot really give too much of a sh*t about the club.

Such was the number of boo-ers in the stadium that on my walk out of the stadium I couldn't help, unreasonably, thinking negatively about pretty much everyone I saw and feeling, for the first time that I did not want to be associated with these pantomime fair-weather fans, I felt ashamed of calling myself an Arsenal fan. If all we were was now spoilt brats throwing our toys out of the pram because they pay for the right to watch their team win every week, orally flatulating in a soulless stadium run by accountants then I no longer want a part of it.

Please cheer the team, encourage them and help to give them the belief that they can be the fantastic entertainers and winners that we all know they have the potential to be. If you want to stand around and boo then go and watch ‘Big Brother’.
