Arsene Wenger’s Vanity Project

Arsenal should return to buying players to play in their best position

Diaby: Return to the left wing imminent?

Fulham have only scored 3 away goals all season. Arsenal are unbeaten since before Christmas. That only goes to show that there are lies, damn lies and statistics.

The good news is that both Gallas and Toure managed to find their way out on to the pitch this time. The bad news is they needn't have bothered. How Fulham weren't 4-0 up within the first 10 minutes is one of life's mysteries. If Fulham had shown a bit more nous and self belief, we could have been on the receiving end of a good hiding. As it was, the sight of them playing keep ball at the end of 90 minutes was humiliation enough.

How did we manage to get outplayed? Fulham have got a team of players, who aren't even well known within their own households. From what I could see though, they're well organised with each player knowing exactly what was expected of them. Arsenal, in comparison, looked distinctly like a bunch of fanny merchants, each playing their own version of playground football. This team is looking more and more like Wenger's vanity project. Let's collect enough skilful young players, throw them together on the pitch and see if we end with Ajax from the 1970s. Total football? Total bollocks.

A team has to have balance. It also has to have players turning out regularly in their preferred position. If you asked Vela, Nasri, Arshavin, Van Persie and Diaby what their best position was, they would all answer the same. The support striker beside the centre forward. So basically, today, we had literally half the team all vying for the same spot. From that we can deduce that the four unlucky ones are playing somewhere on the pitch, where they don't feel at their most effective. I haven't even included Walcott and Rosicky.

It would be lovely to think that talented players can slot in anywhere and play out of their skins, but this is demonstrably untrue. What is the point of buying someone like Arshavin, only to put him on the right wing, because there's nowhere else to play him? If it's a right winger you want, why not go out and buy someone who does it regularly for a living? One of the players who has recently looked the part has been Diaby, but as soon as Fabregas returns, where's Arsene going to put him? Back on the left wing? Do me a favour! Utter madness.

It hasn't always been this way. When Wenger first came to the club, he brought players in with a specific job in mind eg Petit, Vieira, Overmars. There was none of this, 'Let’s put a player in somewhere and see how it goes'. The talent is at the club, the sad thing is the team is going absolutely nowhere. Teams like Aston Villa, Everton and now Fulham make far better use of their resources and pretty shortly are going to start leaving us behind. How depressing is that?
