Gooner Survey Results 2008 – Part Two

All will come to he who waits (ok - except another title to Tottenham)

Gooner Survey Results 2008 – Part Two

Almunia – Only just pipped ‘new signing’ as your choice of keeper

Ed’s note – see here for the apology as to why the posting of these is somewhat later than planned. Remember, votes were cast at the end of last season and commentary written in July 2008. Thanks again to Gareth Bracken for formatting.

Continued from Part One...

Who should be our first choice goalkeeper next season?
1. Almunia - 49%
2. A new signing - 47%
3. Fabianski - 2%
4. Lehmann - 2%

Not exactly a ringing endorsement of either of the two we’re currently left with. Consistently good keepers are hard to find, and given we have other needs, I’d say let’s not spend any unnecessary cash.

Who should be Arsenal captain next season?
1. Fabregas - 33%
2. Toure - 32%
3. Gallas - 26%
4. Gilberto - 6%

Fab is up from five per cent last year; Gallas wasn’t even on the radar 12 months ago. I’m starting to think this is less important than it used to be, but maybe I’m influenced by Arsène’s rather casual attitude. What the hell, let’s give it to Cesc. Why not? Adams was young and it didn’t do him any harm.

Do we need more experience in the team now or are you happy to continue to let the youngsters develop?
Experience 70%
Youngsters 30%

Last season the same question got a 69/31 split. Somehow I can’t see the extra one per cent having much influence on team selection or transfer policy. If we want Wenger, we get youngsters. Live with it.

Should Wenger be grooming someone to take over from him?
No 51%
Yes 49%

Er, why not? Surprising answer, given that a manager is pretty key to success. Possibly the 51 per cent would have added “Because Wenger must stay forever”, but if it’s not that then I’m baffled.

If so, who?
Tony Adams was far and away the first choice, though “not Tony Adams” also got a few votes. Brady, Bould, Rice and Keown were also mentioned, but Bergkamp was in second place, which surprised me. I guess it’s the style of football we are trying to protect. You can’t guarantee winning, but you can decide to play beautiful football. Whether Bergkamp would have the faintest clue about running a club I have no idea. Would he want to? Doubt it. Tony it is, then.

We last lifted silverware in May 2005, so how many more seasons without silverware would you be prepared to accept before a change of manager is required?
Three or more 48%
Two 29%
One 13%
None 10%

Last season 95 per cent wanted Arsène to stay at least five more years, but presumably some trophies were expected during that time. Even so, I think this shows we’re quite a patient bunch. Would the fans of the rest of the big four say the same?

What do you think is the main factor that cost us silverware last season?
Not enough squad depth - 37%
Injuries to key players at key times - 25%
Inability to hold onto leads - 24%
Poor luck with officiating - 13%

Quite realistic answers, I’d say. We didn’t offer an ‘Other’ box, or no doubt we’d have had some amusing answers, but then again what’s to laugh at after another potless season? Apart from Spurs being about as likely to break into the top four as Ebbsfleet United, and Chelsea winning nothing, of course.

After two seasons in the new stadium, how do you now refer to it?
E******s 53%
Ashburton 23%
Arsenal 17%
Highbury 6%

Sorry, I still can’t bring myself to call it that. It winds me up too much. Call me old fashioned. And what really annoys me is that the club remain totally unapologetic, both about the crappy stadium name and the crappy deal we got on it.

Ticket prices for next season will have been announced by the time you come to complete this survey. Do you think they are:
Too much 69%
About right 31%
Not enough <1%

God bless the three people who think they don’t pay enough. Have you thought of moving to Diamond Club or buying shares and joining the Board? Can I give you my bank account details or address in case you have spare cash lying around?

On average, how much do you spend (per person) when you go to a match excluding the cost of a ticket, i.e. travel, food, drink, programme, etc?
1. £10 - £20 24%
2. £20 - £30 23%
3. More than £50 20%
4. £30 - £50 17%
5. Up to £10 16%
