Finally – a Song we can live with?

The much-maligned midfielder’s form has picked up lately

Finally – a Song we can live with?

Song: Will the improvement be sustained?

Arsenal have one of the most talented midfields in the world, but for the last couple of seasons we have been missing something there. We have been missing the protection and security in the middle of the park that allows our creative players to push forward safe in the knowledge that there is someone at the back ready to protect the defence.

All the best teams in the world have a midfielder of this type, Milan have Gattuso, Barcelona have Yaya Toure and Inter have Cambiasso. Flamini used to play this position to an extent but he wasn’t always as imposing as he should have been.

We have been linked with a number of players such as Yaya to fill this void but have we in fact had the solution all along and is the reason we haven’t spent big on a player for this position that Wenger had Song in mind all along?

It may be jumping the gun slightly as the 21 year old has only had a handful of games but his last couple of performances have been excellent and he has controlled the centre of midfield and seems to have balanced the team.

Denilson and Diaby have both tried and failed to fill this position. Diaby only seems to be good going forward and loses the ball far too easily while Denilson seems too lightweight and to lack the tackling ability to fulfil the defensive midfield role.

Song has come in for a lot of criticism since his move to Arsenal is 2005, mostly as a result of a mix of his body language, seeming lack of dynamism and occasional tendency to misplace passes. He has however grown as a player and matured and has begun to look much more comfortable in the centre of midfield where his vision and awareness have certainly improved. Some will disagree that he will ever be able to fill the defensive midfield role but his recent performances have been outstanding and it takes a few years to fully make that position your own. Even the best defensive midfielders in the world grew into the position and were not instantly great there.

The attacking options we have now are simply fantastic especially with Theo returning and Arshavin looking like he has played with us for years, but at times it looks like we need that stabilising player in midfield that we had hoped Denilson or Diaby would be. But they haven’t really been able to play this role.

Song looks like being an excellent prospect for the club and Wenger is the man to get the best out of him but is there going to be room in the midfield with Theo, Cesc, Diaby, Denilson, Nasri, Ramsey, Arshavin and Rosicky (if he ever returns to the team) all competing for positions? If he keeps up his current form then he will leave Wenger with no choice.
