Yes I know it could all go tits up in the next few weeks with three or maybe four games to come against United, two or maybe three games against the Chavs, not to mention three games against teams fighting relegation. Adding to which there still is an emotive away trip to Anfield some twenty years on to take into account.
We could well blow out with zilch this season and we will certainly be up against three at least of the world's top six teams, or four should we make it to a final against Barca. But so what? It is absolutely what you live for as a fan, the big games at the end of the season. Never mind that we played Villarreal with only one of our preferred back five available. Never mind that we have major injury problems at the back. At least Wenger has major problems in midfield and up front, but only in deciding exactly who he should play. Right now I make that a case of perming any six from twelve or thirteen, unless of course they are required to be used as defenders.
The 'Wenger out' brigade have totally shut up and crawled back under their stones along with all the Tiny Totts who thought fourth place was nailed on this season. And even if we were to now blow out on all fronts I can't see those 'Wenger out' fools making a comeback. Youth has prevailed. Even the thickest Arsenal fans must now realise the potential within our current squad, and who is to say we won't add to it this summer?
Diaby, Song, Denilson, Bendtner and even Ebooue have all in the main won over the vast majority of our fans. The jury is surely no longer out over Walcott. Djourou has won his spurs (if you'll excuse the phrase) and Gibbs has been our find of the season, a bigger find quite possibly than Wilshere. Fabianski has shown that he is an able deputy, whilst our number one is without doubt our team's most improved player. The cry for a new keeper being a somewhat muted whisper in the background at best. Do we now miss Flamini or Hleb? Not one bit in my opinion and it is almost as if you wonder what all the fuss is about, given that we won nothing with them. Song will be a better player than Flamini could ever hope to be and it doesn't surprise me that Hleb can't get a game at Barca.
I know we're still a very long way off perfection, I know we still have it all to do, but if a trophy doesn't arrive this season then it will surely turn up in 2009-10. The only negative side I can see is another long summer taken up with the top teams in Europe chasing the top youth players of Europe. But I can live with that and I know I may be tempting fate now - but bring on Barca.
