Carry on Managing!

There were elements of farce to an unhappy display from Arsene Wenger yesterday evening

Carry on Managing!

Arsene: Might not be a sequel this time next year…

Infamy! Infamy! They've all got it in for me. This and other dreadful gags from Kenneth Williams and the Carry On team somehow stick in one's mind. Perhaps Arsene will conclude same if he gives last night's tetchy hour-long Q&A with shareholders a second thought - and that's a big IF.

As our esteemed Ed has already intimated, it was an uncomfortable hour; and at times embarrassing to behold. I was told early never to answer a question with a question unless, perhaps, requiring clarification. There are surely exceptions, but to ask a lady questioner dressed in resplendent purple: "Are you a shareholder?" verged on bad manners.

I almost wish I had Setanta / Arsenal TV as tonight's 9pm show will make for compulsive viewing, unless it is edited (i.e. sterilised), as has already been speculated. And I, too, would not be surprised if, in 12 months' time, it will be impossible to insert a date in Arsene's busy schedule if Arsenal are staring at a fifth consecutive potless season.

We did an experiment in science classes which I keep recalling. Put one hand in cold water and the other in hot. Remove both and simultaneously insert each into a third, lukewarm vessel. The "cold" hand feels hotter than the "hot" one. Given our failed state education system's grade inflation and dumbing down, this will probably be a multi-choice General Science stock question in a few years for A Level, or whatever exams for 18 year-olds are called these days.

Why mention this here? Well, anyone who listened on Monday to the disarmingly charming Ivan Gazidis came away with a very warm feeling. Ivan's excellent performance has unwittingly exacerbated last night's petulance. The applause for Arsene at the conclusion was polite, even enthusiastic, but Arsene was far more interested in disentangling himself from his microphone than acknowledging his inquisitors (and employers).

Perhaps an episode of ‘I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here!’ will provide a change of programme this evening on many Gooners' new favourite TV channel.

It's going to be a long summer, Charlie Brown, with only Ashes humiliation in the offing.
