Looking ahead after a season of disappointment

This summer is the most important of Wenger's reign

Garth Crooks – Got to Ade?

I must say I was proved wrong on Saturday. We have some players who do have balls.

Yes, United only needed a point and many a cockney red in my local watering-hole would argue that they didn’t need to get out of second gear, but if we were a tad more clinical we could and should have taken all three points, did the scousers a bit of a favour and restored some pride for ourselves.

RVP on his own up front clearly doesn’t work. He’s not strong enough and it showed as Vidic didn’t give him an inch. Bendtner would have been a better option I think. Song and Toure were fantastic as were the rest of the team, we actually had a go and so nearly spoiled the party but for poor finishing.

Conspicuous by his absence though was Adebayor. Groin injury my arse. I think he has played his last game for us and if so, then thank God. His interview on ‘Football Focus’ with Garth Crooks, who’s not afraid to ask sensitive questions, really got to Ade. When asked if Ade was committed to the cause at Arsenal he said that, "I told the boss that I would play for free for Arsenal". Then Crooks went on to question him about the Milan saga last summer and granted there’s nothing we can do about paper talk and that we shouldn’t believe what we read in the press but the response he gave really bugged me. If he was "committed" to us then why did he fly to Milan to meet Adriano Galliani? He replied, "To see what was on offer". I’m sorry, but WTF do you have an agent for? Also, if you are so committed to the club why bother listening to offers from other clubs?

We should have taken the £30million last year and we must take it this year if/when someone comes calling over the summer. The way he was moaning that he didn’t understand why some fans still boo him. He broke the trust of the club, his team-mates and the fans and trust has to earned in this day and age. Yes, he has been injured a lot this season but when he has played, it’s not the same Adebayor that we had last season. It just shows you how money corrupts players these days. What makes it worse was that Milan didn’t even make the Champions League this year and Arsenal did so you don’t have to be brain of Britain to see that, like Flamini, he was only interested in the financial package.

This summer I feel is the most important summer of Wenger's reign. He has to get it right in the transfer window and spend big on at least two experienced players, from the Premiership if possible. I’m not too bothered about who moves on unless an adequate replacement is signed up first. We can’t afford another potless season like this one. We tried it Wenger’s way, it hasn’t worked but we have done brilliantly to maintain our top four status since moving to the new stadium. Something which other clubs haven’t been so lucky in doing.

But it’s time to push on and take our place at the top end of the Big Four, where this club belongs. Us fans are sick and tired of watching United get all the glory. Now is the time to do something about it. We’ve been on the outside way too often. Sunday’s game against Stoke may be meaningless on paper but for the fans, the new season starts next Monday.
