Arsene Wenger ‘flirting with the new girl at work’?

Is the manager really to blame for a disappointing season?

Arsene Wenger ‘flirting with the new girl at work’?

Arsene: The board must find some money for Le Boss this summer

Arsene Wenger's recent comments of a supposed flirtation with Real Madrid are a massive wake up call for the club. I won't lie, like many of you I have been hugely frustrated with Wenger's transfer activity and woeful tactics at times this campaign but suddenly I fear what would happen if he did in fact leave.

I don't think for one second he will walk out on us, it's not a "sorry love, I'm leaving you and the kids" moment yet, it's more of a "the new girl at work was flirting with me loads today" wake up call to the missus. Plus he has too many goals he still wants to reach with Arsenal and is too far down the road to stop now. But he has given us a timely reminder what he's working with and in that sense he has performed miracles.

What Wenger's comments have done is highlighted the root of the problem and, in my view, the cause of four long trophy-less seasons - the Arsenal board and the lack of money available. If reports are correct, it will give Wenger a transfer budget of £13m. When there are so many areas of the squad that need improving it’s a complete joke. Telling him he needs to fund the contract renewals of Fabregas and van Persie out of it is laughable. How does the board expect to catch Man Utd, Chelsea and Liverpool if they don't provide what is needed?

Fair enough, selling Adebayor will further raise funds but why should we rely on Wenger's proven record to buy unknowns and sell them to clubs stupid enough to part with stupid money they're not worth? People will argue it’s not there; sorry but that’s not good enough. If we don’t spend soon we will be fighting it out with Spurs for 10th place very soon.

I think Liverpool's past season mirrors ours in 2007/08 when we played superb football all season and were top of the table for much of it only to fall away at the vital time. If they have learnt from us they will improve again this season and challenge again next year. The reason for our downfall was, again, the board failing to invest. They didn't and we all know what was the result. Man Utd went three seasons winning only two domestic cups but their board invested heavily and now they have their trophies.

The wake-up call is this – we are lucky enough to have one of the best managers in the game but without providing him with the transfer kitty he needs we will win nothing. If I was a board member now I would be doing all I can to secure a transfer kitty of £40-£50m by any means necessary but let’s face it, that won’t happen. Up until now Wenger has honourably, if not stupidly, protected the board but regarding the recent criticism from fans why should he take the blame? Personally I think it will be the usual balancing of the books this summer which will mean the same old sound bytes from Hill-Wood come August, but sadly the same end result come May. How long Wenger can put up with this I’m not sure but if he does walk out on us who can blame him?
