Exam time for Arsene

Time to revisit last summer’s mistakes and get it right this time

Exam time for Arsene

Wenger: Getting touchy

It is a weird analogy to make, but I almost see this last season as an extensive revision period for Mr Wenger. Sure, I may have exams on my mind being a university student, and it being that time of year, but I think there are certain comparisons that can be drawn.

As we saw in the Arsenal Supporters Q and A, the boss seems to be getting a tad touchy and taking questions perhaps rightly, perhaps unnecessarily, to heart. After the genuine title winning potential displayed by the team last year, it is obvious that this season has been the most disappointing under the mercurial Frenchman. He realises it, as do the players. He knows the unrest currently dwelling amongst the supporters and must take this on board.

He’s experimented and persisted manfully with the likes of Denilson, Diaby and the ever improving Song (who we must surely give an Elton John ‘Your Song’ based chant to), and his stubbornness, though frustratingly admirable, has ultimately proved to be fruitless. So, Wenger can use the weaknesses of his side and the mainly pessimistic opinions expressed by the fans as revision to take into the summer transfer window and the season ahead, which could prove to be an extensive examination period.

Following the relative failure in last summer’s window, or for the sake of this article, examination, the fans will be expecting much more progress to be made. Mr Wenger did well in his ‘mock’ in January with the high profile and popular capture of a certain Russian, and so partially appeased the exam markers - the fans. So, the boss now has a chance to re-sit the failed exams of last summer, in which he perhaps answered the wrong questions, or did not fully develop his answers, the signing of Nasri being the only first class answer, compared with the almost primary school responses of Silvestre and Bischoff or the promising, under developed choice of Ramsey.

The season comes to a very bleak conclusion tomorrow, and Wenger knows he has severely underachieved. It is not as if he hasn’t put in the work, because no one can ever say that about one of the hardest working managers in football, but his methods were not concise enough, and maybe didn’t fully adhere to the rubric of the supporter’s wishes.

He must now knuckle down to his study from May 31st onwards and show the supporters that he is still capable of the highly intelligent and astute dealings that we used to expect. He may only have state school funding compared to the richer private schools of Utd, Chelsea or Liverpool. This does not however mean that he can’t achieve the same grades, and the ruthless examination board of the Arsenal fans will all unanimously expect a vast improvement.

Good luck to you Mr Wenger.
