Indifferent season leads one fan to question captain’s value to Arsenal

Cesc can be replaced

Fabregas: Made to look like a boy in the recent semis?

The other morning I woke up to unusually beautiful weather to start the day in good form, until I went online and started to read the latest Arsenal news. Our beloved captain had once again been voicing his love for the recently crowned European Champions. This led me to ask myself.... Is Cesc really that good? Would he actually start for the "greatest team in history?"

Fabregas is a fabulous footballer and will hopefully continue to improve, however he was made to look like a boy against Darren Fletcher and Lampard during our two semi finals this season. As I watched with eyes of bitter jealousy as Xavi Hernandes and Andreas Iniesta tore United apart last Wednesday, I thought, where was Cesc when we needed him this season?

Unlike some of the legends that have pulled on the famous red and white, Cesc has not delivered when he has been needed most! Look at the likes of Henry, Vieira, Pires, Overmars. In the past, when we needed them most, at the business end of the season, they stood up and delivered. Yes, these players did play in squads with a lot more experience and had more quality around them, but when they were needed most they did not go missing and hope that someone else would take control.

Fabregas would not have captained any of our previous sides, and I feel that this shows the sheer lack of leadership within our squad that a boy has been made captain of a club like ours. Tony Adams was made captain at a similar age, however was a much more natural leader had others around him to add their experience when needed. I don't feel that Fabregas has done enough to warrant to constant comments he is making to the press. This season he spent more time on the treatment table than on the pitch, and in the time he was out, others stood up and showed their quality, and our results picked up.

This showed me that Cesc is not Patrick Vieira, his absence is not disastrous, he can be replaced. Last season people constantly spoke of how Cesc made the Flamster look good, however I feel it was the other way around, Flamini made Fabregas look good as he constantly won the ball and gave Cesc the space his needed to work his magic. With the addition of a few real experienced players, and the sale of Adebayor, Gallas and Fabregas, the club could generate a lot of money to build a real TEAM. Not a side that rely on one player to pull all the strings.

With players like Song and Denilson showing real quality this season and the like of Vela and Ramsey not far away, we could still win trophies without Fabregas. Many will disagree with this, but just ask yourself one question. Would Fabregas start week in week out for Barcelona, ahead of Xavi and Iniesta?
