Barca's win should give Arsenal food for thought

Barca's win should give Arsenal food for thought

If you fall behind, you get left behind

Summer may have started with some decent weather for a change, but there could be a big storm on the horizon for our club. It’s strange how the current first team has been upstaged by both the women’s team and our youth team who were successful in winning both League and Cup.

The first team and indeed Wenger should take note. If we had shown half the desire or fight (or whatever you want to call) it this season then I think we would have at least one cup in the cabinet. I also think that if both the women’s team and the youth team played our first team I wouldn’t be surprised if the first team got beaten both times. I stated in my last article that the upcoming season is THE season where we MUST win a trophy, even if it’s the "Can’t-care less Cup".

Again this summer we will have the proverbial "Cesc to Madrid or Barca" stories, which I pray to all the Gods does not happen, but like I’ve always said until I see any of our players presented to the media wearing the shirt of their new club I will refuse to believe all these rumours.

It’s clear that money has to be spent, you cannot get away with buying a player from the Outer Hebrides and hope he becomes a star straightaway. In the movie ‘Pirates Of The Caribbean’, the pirates have a saying that "If you fall behind, you get left behind" and that is indeed true in the Premiership. Last year’s gap was only 4 points and this years, 18 points. That’s not only a drop, that’s a bloody skydive.

Our mates in blue across London have yet another manager. It’s frightening how many bosses they’ve had since "Moaninho" left these shores and yet they’ve still not won the Champions League. What made it even worse for me last Saturday was the sight of Cashley with another trophy, knowing that if we got our tactics right that could have easily been us winning against Everton.

Barcelona's win over United was a victory for football as a whole. The way they play their game is not too different from us (and United clearly can’t cope with teams like us when we are on top of our game) but our only snag is that we don’t have a world class striker anymore and no dominant defender and/or midfielder(s). How many of our current squad would get into the Barca's first eleven? No more than three at best. They are the benchmark for us.

We can win trophies by playing the way we do, but you need a plan b and plan c if plan a isn’t working. We just don’t have that anywhere in our squad. Hopefully the boss would have noted this if he saw the final. A lot of Barca's players didn’t cost the earth, only two or three of them. What makes it easier for Barca to attract these players - apart from the club’s history and the league itself - is the chance to compete for the championship and go far in the Champions League.

Had we had a fully fit squad I still think that we would have beaten United and possibly Barcelona in the final. If we don’t buy well this summer then I’m afraid that it’s Europa League next year, at best. That of course may still apply this season if we screw up our qualifier for the Champions League. I had a look at the other European leagues and some the teams that finished 4th are no push-overs. You’ve got the likes of Lyon, Villarreal and Fiorentina amongst others. We will have to be on our guard 110%.
