What Lies Ahead

Kaka: Slightly out of Arsenal’s price range

It’s just over a week till the new fixtures are published, not long to wait now.

I’ve seen on the old Sky Sports News that we are close to signing Thomas Vermaelen from Ajax. He's 23 years old, has made 100 appearances since 2003, has scored a couple of goals and has 20 Belgian caps. The only downside is he ain’t got much pace, is less than 6ft tall and costs £13 million. I don’t think so.

Now Ajax don’t produce any old toot, the trouble with them is that they have to sell their best players to survive. But I believe there are better players out there for half the price. We don’t have much cash to spend at this moment and it’s imperative that we spend it wisely. Now, I’ve seen Vermaelen a couple of times. He’s a good player but he hasn’t got anything that would make our defence better and at £13 million you would think he would be / want to be a certain starter. I’m sure that we could get two thirty-somethings for that money.

A lot has been made in the press of the clubs inability to sell the remaining flats at Highbury Square. Firstly, I think they are over-priced. I think a two bedroom flat is going for something silly like £450,000. That is supposed to be "affordable housing" in the words of Ken Friar. Now that we have Kroenke and Usmanov on the board, why don’t we get them to buy the remaining properties and that would free up some more cash for Wenger.

Speaking of cash, the £58 Million for Kaka that Madrid paid for a 27 year old is a huge gamble but it is good business. Kaka is a real gem, but I think that £40 million is way too much for a player let alone what Madrid paid for him. I would love for us to have that luxury but with the current hierarchy you know that will never happen.

We all have our own aims for this season and my gut feeling is to say don’t expect much, but we are a team who like to spring a surprise. Let your Hansens and Lawros write us off before a ball is kicked. That just might be the motivation we need to at least mount some sort of a title challenge.

Losing out by three or four points isn’t as bad as 18 or 20. We lost too many points against the ‘smaller teams’ in matches where we really should have taken all three points and remember we only lost that freak game to Chavski in terms of games against ‘the other three’.

Whatever the new fixture list has in store for us, we have to take on the chin and deal with it. It should be an interesting championship this year, with the likes of Burnley and Wolves. I hope we’re not one of their victims like we were last season with Hull.

We wait and hope.
