It’s Confederations Cup time again

FIFA are a bunch of rankers

Cesc – crocked in training by… Xabi Alonso!

International football competitions are currently reaching new low levels of stupidity. In case you hadn't noticed there is an ongoing farce being played out in South Africa called the Confederations Cup.

That's the one where Fabregas, if you follow the news, has already been injured twice during his well-earned summer break. The teams involved are New Zealand (World FIFA ranking 82), Iraq (77), South Africa (72), Egypt (40), USA (14), Brazil (5), Italy (4) & Spain (1).

Now ignoring the fact that I can't for the life of me see how the USA sneaked up as high as number 14 can anyone explain why you would pit such badly matched teams against each other?

Exactly what is the point of watching Spain go through an exceedingly light training session during which they thrash New Zealand 6-0 without breaking sweat or moving out of second gear? Who exactly benefits?

Taking this competition on comparative terms and using league tables as rankings the English Leagues equivalent would be to have Manchester United (ranked 1) playing in a competition with Arsenal (4), Everton (5), Portsmouth (14), Barnsley (40), Hereford Utd (72), Gillingham (77) and Chesterfield (82). That would really be something to look forward to wouldn't it in the summer wouldn't it?

Who else could organise such a farce other than FIFA? FIFA, also known as the Foolishly Ignorant Football Authority, but feel free to substitute Foolishly with any F word you feel appropriate.
