It surprises me how much bull the tabloids will print to sell papers. I read in The Sun last week that Utd were going in for RVP. I didn’t know whether to laugh - either in disgust or humour. RVP is a clever young man and I don’t think he would be that stupid to leave us for "oop north" but stranger things have happened. He has a bit of previous with that mob too. Now that Ronaldo has packed his bags for Madrid and with Tevez on his out, who says Utd will still be so dominant?
The fixture calender isn’t too bad. It could have been a lot worse. It’s better to get the tough ones out of the way first. Utd away fourth game in is a good opportunity for us to get something as they are notoriously slow starters in August. The run-in is better than last year to say the least.
I’m not entirely convinced by the signing of Thomas Vermaelen. The Dutch league is quite a poor league and if you noticed over the last decade the good players rarely stay beyond five years at a Dutch club. I stated in my last article that although he may be a good player, he is not what we need at the moment, but you have to give the lad a chance.
However, one other target, Felipe Melo, would be. I’ve seen him play a few times over the last two years for club and country and I’ve been very impressed. He is a combination of Flamini / Diarra / Gilberto. The three biggest mistakes that the boss made were when he let them go so easily. The signing of Melo would be like buy one get two free. I hear that Senderos is being used as bait for any potential deal so it works out best for both players theoretically as Senderos "loved it" in Italy and Melo wants to come to England.
It remains to be seen what becomes of Adebayor. What does the boss do? I for one (like many) would like to see him go if he doesn’t want to stay. He wouldn’t be of any use to anyone at the club but what does Wenger do? Does Wenger sit him down in his office for a one to one, telling Ade that as of this moment he is not the number one striker at the club and that he has to fight for/earn his place in the team? If it means benching him for the first 10 games then so be it, or does he take whatever money he can get for Ade and use the cash on somebody more productive on the pitch than on record? I know which one I would do.
Wenger must also do everything in his power to keep Kolo Toure. Ok, his performances weren’t the best last year but when fully fit, there are few better than him. He’s the pace in our backline which we heavily rely on. If he goes can you really see Gallas or Silvestre trying to play catch-up against the likes of Anelka?
