One of the pleasurable things about putting out all those scarves last Friday was the amazing mix of individuals working in complete harmony. All genders, all ages and a real cross section of nationalities. A sort of microcosm of the Gooner Nation if you like. Nice too that no one moaned about having to do this rather than that, or were miffed that they were asked to work here rather than there. Those that lasted the whole afternoon got the chance to put scarves out on the exterior seating of the boxes, thus getting an eyeful of how the other half live. This is normally an inaccessible area to lesser mortals such as us run of the mill punters.
When I say no one moaned it has to be said that Steve Goodwin, one of the REDaction organisers did cop some earache on his mobile from a few of the many caterers and other workers in the stadium on the day. We were sharing service lifts and other items as some 580 heavy boxes full of scarves were manoeuvred around the various floors, just occasionally assisted by the odd catering trolley or whatever. Friday was a busy workday inside the stadium with quite a few people inside making their preparations for matchday. These included the groundsmen who at the time were carefully mowing our immaculate pitch by hand. Hard work but well worth their effort.
It's very different inside the place without thousands of people and quite weird walking along an empty concourse. We even got to follow England's progress in the Ashes because many of the screens were running. Plus of course we had a delightful preview of the work so far done on the Arsenalisation of the place. Which it has to be said is progressing really well. So thanks for listening to the fans Ivan.
Coming back to my original point. Victory through harmony is very much a team work ethic and it appears that we really do have a team this season attempting to enhance this ethic. They're working hard for one another and seemingly are giving their all. Many of us 'supporting' could learn from this because 'Victory Through Harmony' applies just as much off the pitch as on it. We really do need to get together and back the team more consistently. If you've ever been to an away game and witnessed our away fans giving their all for the cause you'll understand what I'm on about. Think about it, better still act upon it. Do your bit for the team next time you're there for a game. We can't win a game for the team but we can certainly assist given the right attitude.
