One of the many great qualities about football is every one of us has a different view on it. We all know it would be near impossible to walk into a pub on a Saturday evening and not hear at least one group of friends talking about the day's results. There are always talking points which is great. Most of us think we know best and most of us disagree on something or another. We all have the teams we love and the teams we hate.
This is no different for commentators alike but doesn't excuse the shockingly biased view ITV broadcast for the Arsenal v Celtic 2nd leg. If a referee displayed the complete and utter anti-Arsenal sentiments shown by Clive Tyldesley every week we wouldn't win a free kick let alone a game. The man is a fool. Like most commentators they talk about football because they're useless at playing it. You can tell by some of the utter rubbish that comes from their mouths on a weekly basis that some of them have never played the game at any half-decent level whatsoever.
I'm not saying all commentators are crap; there are some very good ones that obviously love the game and improve the viewing. I've never been a fan of John Motson but I respect him for loving the game all his life and always being passionate and unbiased. The problem I have with ITV and one Clive Tyldesley is he makes it so obvious he hates Arsenal you have to laugh. He's meant to be a professional and he lets his own personal view get in the way of calling a game fair and unbiased. Within two minutes of me and my flatmate, both Gooners, sitting down to watch the Arsenal v Celtic 2nd leg he had rumbled off three negative comments about Arsenal.
Even before the first goal, with Celtic having to score three away goals without reply to win, he was talking up their chances and saying "if Celtic ever had a chance this is it". What game are you watching you cretin??? Yes Celtic put the effort in and because we were poor first half they were still in the game but realistically every proper football person knew they never really threatened the Arsenal goal and the result was always going to conclude the way it did. He made snide comments about Eduardo's miscue in the first half on his right foot proclaiming "I can do that!" and then when mentioning the England game said, "well, Eduardo's off the pitch so this doesn't really concern anyone else... but England have a friendly blah blah blah". My flatmate’s brother texted him during the game: “what is this commentator’s problem???”, which summed it up. Embarrassing.
And on to Eduardo's dive. Yes it was a dive and yes it wasn't a penalty and yes it's never nice to see, but so what. It's happened to us where it's cost us a game and sometimes more (Shrek boy diving to end our 49-game unbeaten run immediately springs to mind). But not much is ever made of that. Why then did Tyldesley continue to rattle on about it for the remainder of the game? Then he went on to say "should Wenger sit down and talk to Eduardo about this", I thought, to be honest Clive I'd be more worried about your boss sitting you down to tell you what a terrible commentator you are and giving you your P45. We live in hope.
It got worse when Kenny Dalglish made a comment that British players see foreign players diving so they copy them - Kenny lad, they're not 7 year olds. Steven Gerrard and Joe Cole are some of the worst divers in the game but because they're English it's rarely mentioned. And Dalglish's comment unfortunately summed up the general consensus in the country, certainly in the media anyway - foreign players dive, English players never do. Then an edited interview with Nicky Bendtner to get the sound byte they wanted.... ‘that he didn't see the penalty’ followed by more ridicule from the host before ITV's hopeless coverage ended without an interview with either manager and on to the News at Ten. Oh dear.
Please stick to showing Coronation Street endlessly during the week and leave the football coverage to the professionals of Sky. As much as I dislike some of their pundits they know how to put on a football match. ITV, and in particular, Clive Tyldesley, do not. On another note, great result. Please go and spend now Arsene – a defender and defensive midfielder will do nicely.
