I really hope that when the Transfer Deadline Trapdoor slams shut today this article will make me look foolish.
We have a superb manager who has the utmost self-belief and faith in his ability to organically nurture young talent at the Arsenal. Seeing youngsters come up through the ranks from below the First Team may never replace the pleasure I experienced from seeing young Londoners (and lads from the wider UK and Ireland) burst on to the scene at Highbury but the emergence of a Fabregas (yes he is Spanish and came from Barcelona but look how he got here) or a Wilshere is still a very special event and one in the eye for Chelski and Citeh.
I continue to despair though at Le Boss's myopic approach to getting the right man between the posts. He's tried Richard Wright, Lehmann who did his best to blow the Invincibles' season and who cost the Arsenal a Champions League final and now Le Boss is persevering with Almunia. I was really hoping Almunia was a stopgap because he really is not anything near the last line of defence every trophy winning side has. He lacks composure in big matches, can't command the six yard box and flaps at crosses. This has been a regular pattern of events over the last few seasons and as the Pompey and Merchandise Utd games showed, it is not going to change this year. We need someone in goal who dominates incursions into his penalty area and who can inspire the Arsenal players through being a wall of steel behind them.
Diaby was very naive (yet again) on Saturday but he will come good.
How can Eboue think it was acceptable to throw himself to the floor at Old Trafford after Eduardo was strung up by Celtic and UEFA ? I thought I had seen a rejuvenated reserve right back this season but he really is as brainless as ever and if Le Boss really wants to be surrounded by "intelligent" players (as he kept saying in the press before he got sidetracked onto "cheats" and UEFA being a new Scottish Clan) then it must be "au revoir" time once and for all for this clown.
Final thoughts about Saturday are that well as Arsenal may have played, Van Persie is not suited to leading the line because he is constantly knocked off the ball and man marked by the opposition colossus. The high tempo, pressing game may have seen off Everton and Pompey but Arsenal (still !!!) need an out and out finisher to power through the quality sides like United who have the "know how" and strength to stop the pass and move working and can deny our midfield maestros time on the ball.
Here's hoping against hope that Transfer Deadline Day (totally against previous form over recent seasons) delivers us a core of steel all the way through the middle of the side together with that no nonsense goal scorer we still lack.
