Arsenal squad lacks men

An Italy-based Gooner gives his view on the last two performances

Arsenal squad lacks men

Diaby: Could outdribble himself

I was really tempted to write something down for OnlineGooner after the Man City match, but I admit I was so frustrated, so angry, so emotional I surely couldn't have written something intelligent or coherent to politically correct standards I hope somebody expects by writers.

So I said to myself, let's write something after the Liege match. And here I am, more confused than ever by our performances on the field. I woke up Saturday morning with that feeling I have only on great days: I was sure that after our unlucky loss at Old Trafford, something was going to change, and it was going to happen at Emmanuel Adebayor's expense (not Kolo Tourè's).

I am a medical student, and as all medical students know, my life is made up of study hours, 10-12 a day, if an exam is approaching. I woke up much earlier on Saturday morning, and studied until right before the match, and after it, till 9 o'clock: that's something I always do, trying to mould my studying day on Arsenal's schedule. So I was pretty tense when the match began.

That Man City match really hurt me at first, then led me to think rationally about Arsenal, something we the fans do not always do. Well, this match showed all our strengths and all our limits. Our limits were sooo evident, though. We all know we've been struggling for years in goal, we do not have a 'quality' keeper, as Le Boss would say. He was unlucky, yes, but he's really careless (my girlfriend suggested he's 'brainless' once) sometimes, and he just doesn't seem up to it when it comes to tough games; Denilson-Diaby, the odd couple: I did believe that, between these two guys, just one (maybe) could have been a real high quality first teamer; I've come up to the conclusion that neither of them is good for the bench too. Denilson is not physically coherent to the principles of the British game, he's too small, he's not tough; Diaby really really reminded me Vieira, but he's got this incredible talent, he's capable of outdribbling HIMSELF.

I've finally understood that yes, we do need Arshavin. And we need him to play in every match; he's really a great player, much more than what I really expected from him, he fits our game perfectly. And so does the rejuvenated Tomas Rosicky. I remember him playing in that useless Emirates Cup match with Atletico Madrid, and he was already sharp; and he was at Eastlands, too. Shame Arsene did not play him till everything was almost over, letting other overrated players take his place. I'd have risked him, considering he had played for Czech Republic on Wednesday. We depend on either Arshavin or Rosicky to be on the field as I see them as similar players, they're dangerous, and we need these kind of people on the pitch.

At the end of the game, this incredible 4-2 loss, I was really horrified; by our sloppy defence, by our goalkeeper, by our poor managing (I love Arsene but sometimes he really is blind). I had woken up early, studied all day like mad, and all I got was that classless little thing Adebayor running 90 yards towards the Arsenal fans? That was really awful, believe me.

What I expected from the Liege game was a win, of course, but looking at the events, and at how we won, I can say we were lucky enough. I hoped that the Liege match would have been the cure of our disease, and I'm confident that, even if we won it 'ugly', this would be the turning point of our season.

As John Frusciante has now became a world renowned guitarist after being an heroin addict for years, we can now turn our season after two defeats and a dramatic comeback. Tomorrow against Wigan won't be easy. Won't be like the Portsmouth game; somebody on the onlinegooner forum pointed out some similarities with the Hull game last season; I wouldn't be so pessimistic.

In the end, I hope our wizard manager will pick something out of his hat in the next month. The squad we have lacks experience, lacks height, lacks weight, lacks toughness, lacks men above all. But I feel we can do it. I'm not thinking of winning anything, as it is a bit unlikely, but finishing in the top four, keeping Greedybayor and his parvenu colleagues out, would be nice. Really nice. And it'd wipe away the sweat of a year long studying session.
