My reason for writing is that I have been a season ticket holder for over 20 years and used to sit in the East Upper, which I really enjoyed. I sat next to great guys and the atmosphere at matches was fantastic - in fact on the big games it would send a shiver down your spine. Highbury will always be in my heart and I miss it.
We have now moved on to our new ground which is fantastic - the best in Europe I feel. However it lacks something and I just can’t put my finger on it yet. Yes, it’s new and it will take time to get used to but the passion is missing. Since the start of the new season I have had either two spare seats next to me or different people turn up to each match. The people to my right just sit there in silence. The only words I hear from their mouth is "Go on Henry".
I'm upper tier but 13 rows from the front as most of the front rows went to bond holders. My mates are scattered all over the place. On Saturday I swore a couple of times. Ok it’s not right to do that but the guy in front of me turns round and says "Keep the swears down will ya?" This is a guy who doesn't get up when we score or applaud a substitution. He shows no passion for the match and all he is worried about is my language.
Where are the true Gooners? I feel I am surrounded by ‘prawn sandwiches’. I also blame club level – it’s full of non-football fans or young kids who go off to get their free drinks. I'm grateful to the club for giving us this magnificent stadium, but I want Arsenal fans sitting with me who share my passion for the game and don't play with their mobiles all the time. I want to feel that shiver down my spine again and feel closer to the action.
I know its sounds like I’m not grateful - I am - but speaking to other fans I know they feel the same way. When I mention it on other websites I get slagged and told ‘Give your ticket up’. The concrete surroundings should be covered in red or white. I did read an article from one of your writers who said the same thing, so I know I’m not on my own with this subject. Hopefully by the end of the season I will feel more at home and that the Highbury passion - which is so missing - transfers its way to the new stadium.
