A while back I said that going to watch Arsenal was like going to the cinema, you don’t know what’s going to happen. Well Sunday witnessed an absolute blockbuster. Going behind twice to two lucky goals we could have folded, but like we did in 2006 we came straight back and with a vengence. All the goals would not look out of place for the goal of the season award. Vermaelen has proved his critics wrong and is now top scorer, maybe he was a striker in a previous life, although I fancy Walcott and RVP to go on a scoring run if they stay fit.
Paul Merson said two weeks ago on Soccer Saturday that it would only be a matter of time before we give someone another hiding and it just happened to be Blackburn. However, we are still leaking goals too easily and against stronger sides that will cost us, as we have seen in our trips to Manchester. It’s a good philosophy to outscore your opponent but we won’t be able to do it every time. Yet another international break is upon us and I hope and pray everybody comes back intact as I think we really would be short of bodies otherwise.
I was equally pleased to see King Thierry back. I’m sure he would have enjoyed the match and maybe wished he was out there with the players. There are of course the rumours that PV4 is set to return in January on a short-term deal (he reportedly passed a medical in the summer only for Mourinho to pull the plug at the last minute). It’s a gamble but he needs games and Wenger can offer him that.
Why not ask Thierry to come back for next season? He never got to say goodbye to us properly and he’s won the Champions League plus a Spanish league and cup double. One last hurrah in the red and white and maybe Wenger could offer him a coaching role when he does decide to hang up the boots. He would also fit straight back into this team. Imagine, as free-scoring as we are now what it would be like with Henry chipping in? Wishful thinking I know but you can see that both Henry and PV4 still have the club in their hearts. Vieira may not play every game but just to have him in the dressing room would give the younger players a lift. They can learn an awful lot from him if they are willing to put the work in.
I know Bendtner has been amongst the goals recently and had a brush with death with his accident, which I thank god he walked away unscathed from. If he was a lot nastier on the pitch then he would be a real handful. If he had the physical mentality of let’s say a Kevin Davies, Emile Heskey or even beanpole Crouch and he improved his shooting then not many defenders would fancy marking him. He’s a big lad, so he should use that to his advantage. He played that way in the Championship - which is harder than the Premiership, when he was at Brum and did well. So why doesn’t Wenger take the shackles off him? He can’t do any worse.
