Match of the Day scores own goal with Arsenal analysis

Normally, it's Gary Line-acre who bothers me when I watch this programme, but on Saturday, it was the unassuming Ray Stubbs who has caused my annoyance, along with the Merseyside mafia, Hansen and Lawro (as they are nicknamed by "wingnuts" Gary).

In response to some rather ungallant comments from Wenger and Van Persie (about Everton's timewasting – although surely the complaints should have been directed to Mike Riley?), Stubbs said "It makes me laugh when teams like Arsenal complain about timewasting... what are they (Everton) suppose to do, just go there, and let them (Arsenal) win?" He also questioned the validity of the free kick that led to our goal, and quoted Everton's last but one result at Highbury, where they narrowly lost 7-0. Hansen supported Stubbs by saying that Moyes should have gone for all out attack, and then lose 9-3. Lawro then flippantly claimed that Everton played well.

The problem I have is not that we didn't beat a defensive Everton - it was our fault not taking our numerous chances, not their "subtle" timewasting - but by taking this stance, MOTD are a contradiction. They are advocating the playing style of teams who adopt defensive tatics, but then bemoan the lack of excitement in the Premiership. Is it any wonder, where we have a league where a team’s defensive approach is praised over a team’s attacking approach, that attendances are falling?

Maybe Stubbs is an Evertonian? Well Ray, you can be sure that on March 17th when we go to Goodison, Everton will flood their midfield and play with one upfront, as they did in January, and look to keep the score down. And I'm sure you will willingly pay £35 for that dubious privilege. In fact, don't be surprised if this is the way they play in the Carling Cup next week.
