In a genuine emergency, Arsenal’s aisles would not be safe.

If it takes five minutes just to get onto the concourse at half time when not even everyone is heading there, imagine what would happen when people weren’t acting in a controlled manner

Five minutes before the end of the Liverpool game. Not much of a wait to get out by the final whistle!

I am reluctantly going to add my piece about the Ashburton Grove situation, simply to offer some suggestions on the theme of early leavers. Obviously people want to get home early - especially with the current transport problems. If Ken gets his finger out, maybe he will re-inject the money that he pulled from increasing the capacity at Holloway Road, which would alleviate many of these problems, and I urge the club to push for this.

In the meantime, I am surprised that such an intricately designed stadium takes so long to clear both at half time and full. Being third row (block 3), it takes a good five to ten minutes at half and full time to get up to the concourse. This leaves five minutes to face the queues at the loos (which are no different, if not worse to those in the North Bank) and to get a drink from the braindead catering staff, whose ineptitude resulted in me missing Hleb's goal against Porto (despite the queue being one deep by that point). Why the staircases don't fan out in size towards the top (like in the Stade de France, Paris) to allow for the increased numbers nearer to the exits, I will never know.

Another "new" problem is that I have my season ticket in one place, so my friends who come on their silver memberships often sit in other blocks. In anticipation of the five to ten minute wait for the queues to recede to row 3, I often sneak up to a vacated seat at the back of the block until the half time/final whistle, so that I can meet people in what is now a much larger stadium.

I'm not defending people who leave early (I have always waited until the final whistle myself), nor am I attacking those who have families that they have to get home to (on a good day, I can get home in 30 minutes). I do think that this will settle down in time though, as the early leaving thing obviously doesn’t look good right now due to the sheer numbers that vacate before the game’s over.
