What does loving the club’s history (Everton’s style suited Arsenal not so long ago).have to do with the negative football played by the 6th place team in the so-called “best league in the world”?
George Graham managed Arsenal in a way that worked for him, the time, and his resources. I enjoyed watching us nick a goal and dare teams to score, if we eventually won. But those teams were limited, often dull, and made no pretext about being more than mostly modest footballers with an amazing defence and a top striker. The league and AFC were different then. Expectations were different.
To suggest Wenger should accept that teams in the so-called “best league in the world” should be as negative as the Evertons, Boltons, and Blackburns have been in recent seasons, because GG’s teams were defensive, is out of order. You say entertainment was for wimps. No, it wasn’t. Entertaining football was and will always be about approach, not just results. Did you say that when Arsenal were cutting and thrusting their way through the Premier League not so long ago, while winning trophies? Are you the least bit offended when fans sing “scoring, scoring Arsenal”?
The scoring more from corners argument inevitably comes up after we lose or drop points. I’d like to see it put to rest. Teams that put emphasis on passing and flowing football aren’t as concerned with getting free kicks and corners because they’re not limited in attacking ability; Arsenal play to their strengths which are obviously more sophisticated than waiting for corners and set pieces.
Having said that, I’m sure regardless of the widespread belief that Arsenal want to score the perfect goal, to a man, Arsenal players will take a goal no matter how it’s scored. Besides, is there any more guarantee to score from corners than not if a keeper (like Tim Howard in Everton’s goal) is having a blinder?
