If Arsenal won’t allow huge flags, get the scarves out

An example of the form…

So the club won’t let us have massive flags like other clubs do to get the atmosphere going before the game. If they change their stance it would be great but how about the good old-fashioned scarf.

If you’ve seen the highlights of Celtic’s amazing win at home to United this week you must have noticed just how incredible their atmosphere was and always is. Before and after the game they were all standing up with their scarves held up above their heads. None of them left early, they were all there going crazy, still at their seats even ten minutes after the game had finished. I don’t think we’ll ever be as passionate as the Celtic support, but if everyone in the stadium were to buy a scarf and take it to every game, and made a point of holding it up as the players run onto the pitch and when they leave at the end it would really boost the atmosphere. There would be no steward problems with everyone standing up before and after the game as most people do at this point anyway in order to come and go, albeit for a few seconds. Perhaps if RedAction all started holding up scarves, it would eventually catch on as if more people followed, all the other fans would feel left out.

As a season ticket holder who used to be in the North Bank, but now in the West Lower at Ashburton, I get really frustrated that people around me don’t sing. I’m only a few blocks away from the Red action section but it’s not enough just being able to hear them. However, you don’t have to sit in the redaction section to raise a scarf, and it is certainly affordable for our new prawn sandwich brigade upstairs! It’s simple and easy for everyone and there is seriously no way the club could have a problem with it (as hard as they can try and find one!). It’s also a way of uniting the fans together a bit more. At the moment you’re either Red Action or you’re not and it’s hard for those of us who are real fans but don’t sit in Blocks five and six. We are desperate for some real atmosphere. Maybe the club could even subsidise the cost a bit so everyone has one (unlikely), or work with RedAction to make a new design. Perhaps a traditional, old style scarf would look good.

I’ve never really cared for Celtic but watching 55,000 fans singing You’ll Never Walk Alone holding up and kissing their scarves just looked amazing. A number of Arsenal fans, including myself want a club anthem, hopefully one will come eventually. We need to start new traditions at the Grove so that in a few years time, we will become the best fans with the best team in the best stadium. Imagine in a few years time, (when the Emirates sponsorship expires) as the players run onto the pitch, the whole stadium stands up holding up their scarf while singing our new club anthem. It’ll intimidate opponents and really make use of the fact that we have this amazing stadium, with our prawn sandwich brigade pouring the money into the coffers to sign future Cescs and Theos. Fortresses aren’t built overnight but we have to start from somewhere.

Also, how about outside the stadium, instead of those concrete slabs, huge pictures of Thomas’s 89 celebration, Adams with the 98 trophies or 94 Cup Winners’ Cup Trophy, Vieira 2004 etc...

Check out this clip from Youtube for the Celtic v Liverpool match in 2003. Maybe we could create that in the future.
