Flag Ban – The Last Post

Concluding the flag issue as far as the exclusives section of onlinegooner goes…

Flag Ban – The Last Post

The World: Plenty of other conflicts

Calling all Cypriots, Greek and Turkish. Can we call an end to the flag debacle and focus our attentions to the whole reason why we visit Ashburton Grove and the Gooner website? Yes, to support the Arsenal.

I am sure many other nationalities who are in or have been in conflict with each other bear grudges and are offended by the flag of their "enemies". However, using Arsenal as a political battleground is just unacceptable. Please remember we support Arsenal Football Club for its footballing status, not its politics. This is not a Cypriot club in which your individual politics determines the team you support.

I would like to thank both N13 Gooner and Reality for putting across both sides of the story and educating the Arsenal community of the problems in Cyprus. Sadly, you have also both shown the reasons why a solution to the Cyprus problem will not be found in our lifetime.

Just to add a bit of spice to the whole Cypriot flag debate, the more recognisable Cypriot flag was actually designed by a Turkish Cypriot, who is currently suing the Cypriot government for non payment to the rights over its use. Does this mean that we are against this flag as well??

At the end of the day if fate landed a Greek and Turkish Cypriot sat next to each other at the European Cup Final in Athens and Arsenal win will they embrace and sing together? Of course they will, because they would be there supporting The Arsenal and that my friends is where it should end.

Happy New Year.

(Ed’s note – I was uncertain about posting anything further on this issue, but due to the sentiments expressed, I feel this is a suitable way to bring a curtain down on this debate on this part of the website. Those who wish to discuss it further can use the forum section of onlinegooner if required. But otherwise, here’s hoping we can all live in some kind of harmony, at least within the walls of Ashburton Grove).
