Why there are so many empty seats at Arsenal’s ‘sold out’ home games

Are some fans are so well off they can afford to buy tickets and not use them?

Why there are so many empty seats at Arsenal’s ‘sold out’ home games

Healthy crowd for the youths’ semi, but gaps could be expected for this one.

I went to the Youth Cup game on Wednesday night and the morning after realised I had experienced a mirror image of what is happening at our new stadium on first team matchdays.

I bought four tickets for the game, one for me and three others for people who wanted the new experience. It turned out, because so many tickets were available and affordable, that I only needed two of these tickets. The other two people had bought their entry elsewhere before getting to the ground due to a misunderstanding. I only realised this half an hour before kick off. This left me two spares before kick off. I did not want to risk getting nicked selling them and could not be bothered to give them away. Why? Because they were only three quid each. I thought what the hell.

This must be what so-called fans are doing with seats for first team games. I am not the richest man in the world but in the current climate six quid is an affordable loss, especially as the redscum were despatched by a top class finish.

Having seen empty gaps in the first half, against PSV, the rich at Ashburton will buy the tickets and if they get a better offer elsewhere in the form of whatever they consider to be better entertainment they will fail to show. £70 is spare change for the new punter and I'm sure it doesn't bother them to miss out.

If our team does not win anything soon, it could find itself being some way down on the list of priorities for some new fans who are not thick and thin like the old school. I am not sure I can remember any team winning any trophies in a half empty stadium.
