Stop all this Arsene out nonsense!

Enough with the knee-jerk reactions. The Gunners are actually doing better this season than last.

Stop all this Arsene out nonsense!

Baptista – More effective from midfield

After having quite an indifferent month and listening to fans on the radio and posts on the website a lot of Gooners seem to being heading for a nervous breakdown. Keep it together people - we've been to a Cup Final and are third in the league. Already, we are doing better than last season. If you look at the facts for the season it’s a bloody miracle we are where we are. It would be fatal for the club if we got rid of Wenger and Henry in the summer, let alone let Fabregas go. Amazingly I've heard these ideas too often recently.

Our season has been crippled by injuries, yet we still have three players in double figures for goals scored. By the end of the season I'd hope that Baptista and Gilberto will squeeze out more than three goals between them to join Van Persie, Henry and Adebayor in double figures, which would be our best all round return for about three seasons. Unlike our editor I hope Baptista stays, I think he will be fantastic for us making runs from midfield. I believe he is being played out of position, as he is not a centre forward but an attacking midfielder much like David Platt, or dare I say it Flampard. Look at the goals he's scored, six of them have come when he is running from deep, and he is sensible with the ball always looking for the simple pass as opposed to the impossible passes Hleb looks to make (I'd love see Hleb's pass completion stats as I will be amazed if it’s over 50%). With goals being spread the around the team this has to be a major positive for the season.

Henry has had five outstanding season for us, surely we can allow him one bad season in which he has been plagued by injury yet still managed to score twelve goals for us, including the highlight of the season against Man Utd. I'm sure all level headed Gooners would allow him one poor season considering he's consistently been the best player in the world. He'll be back fully fit next season and once again top the goalscoring charts, I just pray it is with us. RVP's injury came at a lousy time for us (and him) as he was hitting the sort of form that would have given Ronaldo a run for his money in claiming the Player of the Year award. Yet he's still he's our top scorer. As for Fabregas, the kid been our most consistent performer and he's played the most games. Sure he should have scored more goals with the opportunities he's had but did Vieira ever get more than eight goals in a season? Those who say he only performs in the big games should get out their armchair and actually go to a match.

Getting rid of Arsene would be catastrophic for the club. In the pages of the Gooner over the last couple of years I've been quite critical of him at times, yet he is simply the best thing that has happened to the club since Herbert Chapman turned up at the Marble Halls. For the young players he has been grooming for stardom and the belief he has in them, his leaving would probably destroy their morale. It would be like losing their father.

As the Highbury Spy points out quite eloquently, Arsene is prone to making a ricket of substitutions. I believe he lost us the Champions League final when he took Pires off instead of Hleb, but that's so last year. At the moment Arsene seems to be suffering from his own greatness. When fully fit we've got by far and away the strongest squad in the country, which Arsene has created, but it seems we have just too many good players, if the fans struggle to agree on our strongest line-up imagine what its like for Arsene? It now seems that Arsene is preparing his squad for next season because unless we lose our remaining nine games we won't finish lower than fourth. With reaching the Carling Cup final he achieved one of his long term goals which is to reach that final with a mixture of youth and reserve team players. Who else has done that?

In Europe Arsene has not had much luck as I think he's the only manager to have lost in the final of all three major European competitions. I believe he will redress this by leading Arsenal to winning the Champion League within the next two seasons, making us one of only four clubs (I think?) to have won all three European trophies.

Our remaining fixtures are quite tough and there's going to be more surprises and disappointments in store, so Gooners have your aspirin and defibrillators close to hand in case you totally lose control. Our sole target for the season must be to finish third within ten points of Chavski which would indicate massive progress made in one season. May I add, that being out of the two cup competitions is good for us fans as it’s been a costly few years. We could do with a financial breather as I believe we are going to need every penny for next season.
