Ok so we're going through an injury crisis. We've had three strikers out, full backs missing to name but a few. Granted, we've moved to a new stadium which traditionally has problems during the first season.
But let’s look at the bigger picture. We've gone three seasons now without mounting a serious title challenge. When was the last time you felt confident Arsenal could defend a set piece? (A few years ago I expect.) In how many games over how many seasons have we not finished teams off and conceded late costly goals? (Plenty and far too many is the answer.)
I'm sorry but you can't put it down to injuries or bad luck or bad refs over such a long period of time. The facts speak for themselves. We've had three seasons of weaknesses, shortcomings and frailties that simply haven't been addressed. We haven't had money to address the problems I hear some of you cry. Whatever happened to old-fashioned work on the training ground?? Surely Messrs Keown and Bould can do something to address our defensive frailties given how blatantly obvious they are?!!
Arsene seems more and more obsessed with his 'total football' - so much so that he now appears to hide behind it as a justified excuse for losing! Arsene, I love our style of play but I also want to compete and win things!!
Are we improving? No we're not!! You'll need two hands to count the number of away games we lost by a single goal last season, most to inferior opposition. The same is becoming true of this season. If the same thing keeps happening again and again you have problem. Not bad luck or injustice, a problem and one that needs fixing. Whether that’s personnel, tactics or a combination of both I'll leave you to decide but the last three seasons have shown that blind faith in beautiful football does not win you trophies!! Let’s face it, we're a soft touch and we've been sussed out as such.
Arsene now has nine mores games to decide whether Baptista and Aliadiere are good enough. The same could be said of Senderos and the same period should help him decide whether Freddie is now past it and should be moved on. He needs to use the remainder of the season to shape his plans for next term, while of course securing at least fourth place. If he has any doubts, these players should be allowed to leave and the money saved/gained spent elsewhere.
As well as the obvious areas to address (goalscorer, goalscoring midfielder etc) a few new faces can also bring a fresh feel and buzz to the squad. Is it any coincidence that Arsene bought a cluster of new players in the summers of 1997 and 2001 and we won doubles both of the following seasons??
Wenger has told us for three seasons now that "We don't need a lot". Please, please, please Arsene don't kid yourself again and fail to address this summer what is desperately obvious. We don't need kids or players who take a year to adapt. We need battle ready players for specific starting positions that can deliver a specific role. Please don't put us through another frustrating season of head scratching. We are a fickle bunch and you can only have our loyalty for so long. You have earned time and patience but four years without a title challenge is too long for today’s Arsenal.
