Blackburn Balls-Up

The players are to blame for cup exit

Blackburn Balls-Up

71% possession. 16 corners. 28 attempts at goal. A shot that rattled off the crossbar. Despite all of the above Blackburn won the game with a scuffed attempt on goal. A fluke.

I understand most of the gripes about Saturday’s game, believe me I do. I am left empty after losing games that we dominated wholly such as the weekend’s. But what I don’t understand is why our players are exempt from criticism, while our manager Arsene Wenger appears to be such an easy target for our frustrations. Admittedly, Wenger has had better years with us and we are in a trophy drought but is that all Wenger’s fault? From what I make out the answer is simple. The answer is no.

Look at our squad in the invincible season. Passionate, driven to succeed and every single player, from Lauren to Cygan knew what playing for The Arsenal meant. Is our current squad cut from the same cloth? The simple answer is no, they are not. That’s not to say that we don’t have individuals that would die for the cause – most notably our future captain in midfield Jack ‘Liam Brady’ Wilshere. There are others too, but would any of them go as far as Wilshere in striving for every ball, tackle and result? I seriously doubt that. In my opinion, we need to educate imports from overseas and from other teams just how important playing for the club is. Lukas Podolski is the only player from overseas that has thrown himself into learning about the culture and history of AFC (from his Twitter tour of London).

I believe that the decline in our trophies is, in part, down to the philosophy of clubs such as Chelsea and Manchester City changing and simply put, we cant compete when we don’t spend money its as simple as that. We are building for the long haul to ensure top flight survival and that is obviously satisfying and necessary, but we need a trophy to silence critics but more importantly to instil some self belief in our squad. I truly believe that once one trophy comes, we will get more. On Thursday night, Christian Purslow the former Chief Executive at Liverpool spoke very highly of Arsenal’s business model. Everyone always does; but Purslow went on to talk about the sugar daddy clubs stating that ”no manager, or chief executive could have made Arsenal a serial winner of the EPL with that change in environment’. Don’t get me wrong, Wenger isn’t faultless. the fact that we have appear to have no plan B irks me greatly.

However, no-one can criticise Arsene’s team selection for the FA Cup tie. With the game against Bayern Munich coming up Tuesday might, it was always a given that key names may be rested. Jack Wilshere, Santi Cazorla, Lukas Podolski and Theo Walcott all named amongst subs, we had a strong bench to pick from. But the starting 11 were more than good enough to see the result return in our favour. Fresh from a good run in the AFCON with the Ivory Coast, Gervinho started as did Arteta, Vermaelen, Koscielny, Giroud, Rosicky and Oxlade-Chamberlain, yet the fault remains, or so it seems on twitter, at the door of Arsene Wenger. The fault should lay with the players who didn’t do enough during that 90 minutes of football. Arsene cannot stick the ball in the net himself. Gervinho should have stuck us ahead just before the first half but dragged wide and other highlights included Diaby’s 25 yard effort flash wide and Rosicky’s effort come smashing back off the crossbar.

Instead of screaming “Wenger Out” or taking to Twitter to get #Wengerout trending every time something goes wrong, we don’t get a result or you’re upset, relax. It could be worse, we could be Liverpool.

Or worse still, that mob from down the Lane.

Although I agree that Wengers time seems to be at an end. I also blame the players for us being knocked out of both cups and our position in the league. I know Wenger bought our present crop of players and sold some of our best assets, but does he perform on the pitch?. When you see other clubs sack their manager, there is normally a sudden upturn in the teams performance and they seem to start winning games. Could this be that the players are "trying" because they want to make a good impression on the new manager? It's about time some of our players started "trying" and maybe we would get some results. I know we cant get better players before the end of the season (if Wenger stays we wont get better players) but I bet our performances would improve if a new manager came in.

I agree with most of this but how do you know Podolski is the only current foreign player to try and immerse himself in Arsenal/English culture? Granted I find it hard to believe Gervinho has been in his study swotting up on the 70/71 double season (although it's a lovely thought) but it's a bit sweeping to suggest none of the others have made any effort. Anyway from what I remember Almunia was all over our culture - going to museums, learning about WW2 etc but it didn't exactly make him a great goalkeeper did it?

Man Utd are still playing Scholes and Giggs (and they held on to Keano and others for as long as they could) in order to instil the character and requirements of being a Man Utd player in their new and upcoming players. What did Wenger do after the invincible season? DISMANTLE. He thought he had arrived, and that it was him, and not the players, who got us there: out with every experienced player and in with the unreliable 'project youth' (and even those players deserted him: clichy pined for ashley cole's position for years, Fabregas pined for Viera's: and where are they now?); they won nothing, blamed others and walked away. All you hear is the club's lack of ambition and all that crap: were the invincibles all SUPERSTARS bought in from other leagues (I think not); we got to the final of the carling cup and threw it away to an average team (birmingham); I suppose clichy & co will blame that on the club's lack of ambition too? The manager has his faults and I still think his haste in dismantling his best teams and getting rid of Lauren, Gilberto, Pires, Edu and players like that for his silly Project Youth has been his downfall. But for crying out loud: THESE STUPID OVERPAID PLAYERS should be beating Bradford and Blackburn even if we dont have a manager!!!

Sorry the buck does stop with the manager. Why in almost every home game this year has the team started off so slowly?Teams come to our place sit deep & know we play the same formation & move the ball sideways without pace it is very predictable. We only seem to get a response when we go behind. Not just against the so called lesser opponents we did the same thing against Utd at OT didn't even try to give it a go until 2-0 down ditto Chelsea away & Liverpool at home.I have said on another article we were playing Blackburn at home could we not try to play two up top against teams that just want to sit deep?Opponents do not even need to scout us.CanadaGooner called it right early this season & last the manager has one target top 4 the players know this as well put them in a pressure situation they come up short time & again with regards domestic cups. The team picks itself & you saw squad players picked Saturday in such a comfort zone unmotivated from the sidelines & from within.

Of course the players are as much to blame, and they have never escaped criticism from me when warranted and that's often.I agree the players have to take some of the blame and responsibility for results. But the manager is responsible for the players, he picks them, he coaches them, he plays them,he picks formations, and tactics,he gives the team talks,he persists with dross, not kroenke, Ivan,or Hillwood. These mistakes and performances aren't one offs they've been going on season after season and not addressed and it's been costing us,who's fault is that ? If he can't motivate them enough to go out and beat teams of nobody's from lower divisions like Bradford who's fault is that ? if they can't be motivated he picks them plays them who's fault is that ? Was it because of what the blue mancs and the chavs spend that we extended our trophy drought by being put out of two cups by lower division nobodys who are earning a fraction of what our players are and our reserve team would have been capable of beating ? No it was the team and the manager and the manager is responsible for every aspect of the team.

If I was a former chief executive of Liverpool I might encourage Arsenal to stick with Arsene too. You shouldn't pay too much attention to the views of opposition management when it comes to the running of our club - I'm guessing here but their agenda may not be quite the same as ours.

Of course theyre to blame, but the Coach bought and picked them all. Not only that but the performance reflected dozens of performances like that in the last 7 years. Tired, effortless, and non committed football, played by players who appear to reflect the Coach's disdain for the tournament.

Firstly, i understand your logic and support but as for allowing a player that didn't do enough to carry on playing was on Arsene!!! The player's name is Diaby. If you have watched the game you will know why! I do agree that all is not Arsene's fault but all the arrows seem to point towards him and the board (Stan)!!! If i was to shot one person out it would be Stan effing Kronke!!!

Some of the players let us down for sure. It's shocking the lack of urgency they often display, but a FUNDAMENTAL part of the Manager's job is a) to judge a player's character before he brings him to the club and b) to ensure his players are pumped up for each and every match. Too many of our players appear to be quiet and recessive as individuals and for too many games in each season, year after year now, we drop points or lose games because we haven't battled at all or for long enough in a game. That is totally and absolutely the Manager's responsibility. Is it the captain's job too? Yes for certain on the pitch but who chooses the captain?

The big problem as I see it is that there is no organisation in our defens. Compare that to recent Man U matches. Fredinand is well past his best as a player but you still see him organising the defense encouraging players and telling them where to go. Contrast that with the way Arsenal players seem to amble about at corners and free kicks, leaving opponents with free headers.

The buck stops with Wenger. They are his players and his team; he is responsible and has to stand or fall by their performances. It is about time he did the decent thing and fell!

We soon will be Liverpool if we don't get some leadership at the top and a change of manager. The reason people are criticising Wenger is that we get the same sideways sloth season after season. The players change, the pattern stays the same, ergo it's the manager's methods that are the problem.

Of course the players deserve criticism but Wenger signed 10 of them and is paid £7m a year to train, organise, improve and motivate them. We've been making the same mistakes for years now with different players in the team and the common factors are Wenger's inability to organise a defence, an arrogance that we only have to turn up to beat most sides and a complete lack of tactics that sees us play exactly the same way at home to Blackburn as we do away to Manchester United. I've got no problem with having a go at the players but don't forget who it is that, at almost every one of his increasingly bizarre press conferences, expresses his complete faith in them.

Blackburn was a fluke so was Bradford so was the 8-2 so was the 4-4 at Newcastle,Birmingham at Wembley was a fluke. Why is it everytime we lose its not the managers fault but a fluke. The manager picks the team.Wenger got all the glory until 2005 now he deserves to get all the stick. He picks the team and buys the players.Wenger has lost the plot

What an absolute load of BS. City this season couldn't even beat Ajax mate, and last season even Sporting Lisbon were better than them. United got knocked out of Europe by Basel and Athletic Bilbao. This season Chelsea lost 4-0 to Athletico Madrid and crashed out of the Champions League in the Group Stages! The League hasn't been so weak for years- all we needed to do was keep our best players and we'd still be the same level as before ie 2009 when we were semi-finalists in the Champions League. Winning trophies domestically would have been so easy then. Yes Gervinho missed a sitter, like against Bradford, and who picked him to play? Who decided to confine our tactics mainly to crosses but didn't put two strikers up front?

I'm upset you made me post this: That lot down the lane have won a trophy in the last 8 years. That lot down the lane are above us in the table. Barring Adebayor's inspired display that lot would have beaten us at home this season. Liverpool have been awful, but won two trophies since we last won one (three if you count the one they won the same year as our cup win) Only one other Arsenal manager has gone this long without a trophy, and that was during WW2.

I think you miss the point,it was not about one game, but 8 years of under achievement and decay. It is the case that the football landscape has changed but when it comes to match days the team should be able to do the simple things right-shoot,defend and cross the ball beating the first man.our boys think they are barcelona but are actually barnsley in their delivery of success. There is an ideological malaise at the club due to the spreadsheet being the only concern. This will only improve with a clear out of two thirds of the squad, money grabbing kronke.smiling apologist gazidis and the emperor in his new clothes-naked to the outside world but looking magnificent to his own view.It was not about one game!
