The Criminal Neglect of Tomas Rosicky

Should the number 7 be getting more playing time?

The Criminal Neglect of Tomas Rosicky

Robin Van Persie was first, Alex Song was second and Tomas Rosicky was third; can you guess what it is? Those are the results of the Arsenal player of the season award for the 2011/2012 season. With Robin Van Persie and Alex Song having left for pastures new (bastards), this leaves Tomas Rosicky (in the fans eyes) as our best player last season among those who remained at the club.

But, at the time of writing, Arsenal have just been embarrassingly knocked out of the FA cup by Blackburn Rovers, we have been knocked out the Capital One Cup by Bradford, are four points behind Middlesex Hotspurs and our only chance of winning a trophy comes in the shape of a miracle against the awesome Bayern Munich in the Champions League, to probably draw another European heavyweight if we get through to the Quarter finals; what bugs me more than anything about this situation, is the lack of game time for one of our best players.

I got ‘Little Mozart’ on the back of my shirt for F***’s sake! Rosicky has so many of the key attributes that make a great midfielder; his passing and through balls are superb, his work rate is tremendous, his crossing and dribbling is among the best at the club and he has a great shot when he gives it a go; what he lacks in pace and strength he easily makes up for in determination in my, and many others opinion.

The only thing that’s held him back from being one of the best in the League in my opinion is injuries; he’s had a silly amount, and he missed the first few months of this season because of injury, which is nobody’s fault. However, when he came back to fitness, the way he’s been ignored and under used is baffling. That is someone’s fault; I love the man, but Wenger has handled Rosicky awfully. Then we have to handle those stupid rumours of drug problems, and the more tragic thing is that people actually believe them. Sigh.

Don’t get me wrong, I really like Santi Cazorla; he’s a better player than Tomas Rosicky. But he’s inconsistent and very patchy in form; why then, when Santi is off form, isn’t Tomas getting a start? It infuriates me when he’s left to rot on the bench, when he’s the kind of dynamic dribbler we need coming off the bench to make an impact; it infuriates me further, when he’s playing superbly and taken off, like against Blackburn on Saturday; his through balls were causing their defence hell, and he’d already struck the bar from 25 yards. Take him off when we need a goal? It’s only logically.

I think he’s had a rift with Arsene; his contract expires in 2014 and my guess would be Tomas isn’t getting another one. It’s just my guess as to why he’s getting nowhere near the amount of playing time he deserves. I’ll be gutted when he leaves, which will probably be at the end of this campaign. Good luck Tomas.

Whoever says Rosicky is a waste and should be sold or should not be playing is absolutely delusional. He is better than any other midfielder Arsenal has besides Jack Wilshere and maybe Santi Cazorla. His speed is not the issue he ran down C. Ronaldo when he was at United and when you watch him play recently his speed is no issue. Why keep a top class midfielder on the bench when he is fit. The one downfall is he is injury prone which sucks but if you remember RVP was injury prone as well until the last 3 years. Whoever thinks Diaby and Ramsey are even close to Rosicky's talent level are utterly stupid and have no understanding of how to play football. Ramsey is the ****tiest midfielder (who plays big minutes) that I have ever seen in an Arsenal shirt in the past 10 years. Rosicky could be the turn around to the terrible season Arsenal is having and may be able to get us back into top 4 spots (since we call that our trophy nowadays).

@Canada Gooner no disagreement with your point but what I was saying is that it's so sad our club has declined so much that we're struggling in a shockingly weak league to get fourth, while they Scum have already cruised to third as a one man team...

Jumping Goalposts - That was an exceptional half season. His first season was good too. After his injury obviously it was going to take some time for him to get back to his best but he was brilliant in the second part of last season. We owe him for being in the CL this season. Funny the number of haters there. Frustrated Arsenal fans or, dare I say it, Ramsey fans? All jealous of his salary?

Jumper for Goalposts - It was far from just that half season. He was good in his first season too I'm saying he was exceptional for that half season before his injury. When he came back it took him a little while of course it would but he was brilliant in the second part of last season. You could say we owe being in CL this season to him. It's quite funny the number of haters there seem to be. Frustrated Arsenal fans or, dare I say it, Ramsey fans?

@Canterbury Gooner: Grass is always greener elsewhere mate. Where has Gareth Bale been all his years at Spurs? Are they not only just fighting for 4th spot too? Arsenal do not have a DIVINE previlege to be better than Spurs, we just happen to be. What do you think Spurs fans thought all those years when they watched Thierry Henry, Fabregas, RVP and countless other wonderful players Arsenal have displayed over the years. So, dont start getting over yourself here mate! When Spurs begin winning trophies, play in CL consistently and finish higher than us in the league you can start rolling out the red carpet for Bale. He played well for them when they beat Inter Milan some seasons back: AND SO WHAT? (did they win the trophy?). Seriously people!!!!

I see the chinese whispers on this thread have elevated Rosicky's wages from 60k to 80k per week. In keeping with that trend, I'm saying he's on 99k per week. Any advances on that?

Last night I watched a world class Gareth Bale clinch a win with an incredible goal, and while our biggest rivals are on the up reaching third place, we are barely credible contenders for fourth in a p*** poor EPL, and discussing the merits of an injury prone squad player on 80k a week.

I do not think there is anything baffling about Rosicky's playing time. He was good in 2007 - 2008, then had a long term injury. After recovery he had a good second half to 2011 - 2012. At the start of this season he was injured again, and now is finding his way back to form and fitness, hence playing more. I think he is best in the number 10 role, but not as good an option there as Cazorla.

Rosicky is class and helped RVP salvage last season. He is far far better than Ramsey and has the ability to create enough with his passing and vision to change a game. He is quick thinking and should start when fit. Yet again Wenger has helped to turn a gifted player into something way below his talent. Sure he has had plenty of injuries, but look at many others in the team over the years. He still has some good years left too as he has been out so long. This last one was a real shame as he was looking great last year befor the Euros. Another good player we should see more of but inexplicably don't thanks to Wenger.

Shane - you've written "To say he has done nothing is a f***** up generalization". - - - - - - No it's not mate. To say he's done nothing is a statement of fact. Half a season in 2007 / 2008 does not justify £65,000 a week 6 years later.

He let's Rosicky rot on the bench and yet he keeps playing that inept waste of space Ramsey....At least Rosicky drives the team forward and has skills, unlike Ramsey who either passes sideways, backwards or tries one of his flicks and gives the ball away....

To answer your questions on why not rotate. Wenger picks his favourites and sticks with them until they come good then overplays them when they are in form. This is to the detriment of the other players and often means arsenal are over reliant on to few 'stars'. Think of a blistering nasti getting pushed out to the wing when a cesc came back on one leg. Also RVP coming straight in when Chemaq was scoring and then the latter then barely kicking a ball for 12 months. Now please answer me this why did wenger extend Thomas's contract when he was lining up santi and knew he wasn't going to play him?? Such a waste of talent.

    Feb 25, 2013, 19:33 #32611

It's not Rosicky's fault that some Greek kicked his achilles up his leg. The comments here are mis-informed. Rosicky was fit during his first one-and-a-half seasons and if you remember correctly was the the second best of the four musketeers in Arsenal's midfield in 2007. He had a rare injury it's not his fault what can he do if he gets kicked in exactly the wrong place and his tendon comes off his bone? When he came back obviously he was going to have some problems getting back up to speed but he showed his quality last season. He was fit throughout it was only that Wenger for some reason thought Ramsey was better than him lol. To say he has done nothing is a f***** up generalization.

Realistically you would have to drop either Cazorla, Wilshire, Walcott or Podolski to accomodate Rosicky. All of those players have produced this season - Rosicky is often injured and he is also, with the best will in the world, inconsistent. He is a superb player to have in reserve and on the bench. We should keep giving him big contracts because he's a great player and hasn't agitated for a move - at least not publicly.

Rosicky must play when he is fit. After choosing Rosicky AW can select the others minus Ramsey. Ramsey is the crappiest player in Arsenal. Carzola and Wilshere will only be better when Rosicky plays alongside them. AW stopped evolving in 2005. He has become laughable alongsside his employers. The guy is concerned with what's not his biz. Your job AW is to manage your players onfield not focus first on finacial matters.

I quite like him but hes been a poor buy. All those years, half of them on the treatement table. About 15 goals id guess OR few more maybe? Hes on his way and to be honest, hes no great loss. Yes, we need a few old heads kept on the staff but lets have ones that can play when called upon to do so. Hes as bad as Diaby!

    Feb 25, 2013, 15:34 #32603

Arsenal's invisible man. His injury record is nearly as good as Daibys but when he's fit he looks terrific. No idea why Wenger doesn't play him but then i've no idea why he plays Gervinho, Ramsey, Sagna to name but a few. I'm with silvergooner on the Arshavin thing. Wenger destroyed him by playing him wide. He's clearly a difficult character but presumably that part of a managers job. I suspect Wenger is only interested in 'yes' men who think he's gods gift to management.

A big mistake as far as arsenal are concerned Sam, getting a players name or nick name on the back of your shirt, not that there's anything wrong with it a lot still do even if the said player isn't fit to wear it in the first place,i know somebody who has Diaby on his.Although a bit of a sick note himself Rosicky is one of the better ones when he plays and he seems to be fit at the minute, yes there's the rift rumor and if true he should have more sense as to fall out with ogl nobody tells him what they think.Anyway there's the stumbling block of the old favorite scenario and little Mozart doesn't look to be one of them.

    Feb 25, 2013, 12:35 #32592

Really? Rosicky has a rift with wenger - I thought he must be wengers long lost son with the contracts he keeps getting. To only offer over 30's one year contracts and losing the likes of pires, fredy and sol too soon, and then give rosicky 2 years after a laughably low number of games in the past 2 years is strange to me. Hard to forget images of him laughing and walking away from free kicks that were flying towards our goal last season.

What good is having a good player if he is always injured. He has already missed over half of this season. Both him and Diaby are bleeding the club by taking big wages and never being fit.Fergie wouldnt put up with them

    Feb 25, 2013, 12:15 #32590

Lacking in pace? Have you seen Rosicky play in the second part of last season? He breezes past an entire midfield when he sees an opening, there is nothing lacking in the speed department for him. I would contend that Cazorla is a brilliant technical player but Rosicky has a much better reading and understanding of the game than him. I can only hope that at some point very soon he is given a start alongside the first team and he can show just how valuable he is

What?? Is this the same Tomas Rosicky that has been at Arsenal for 7 years but has started in only 78 Premier League matches? The same Tomas Rosicky that has scored 20 goals in those 7 years? The same Tomas Rosicky that trousers £65,000 a week for sitting on his arse or floating through matches when he does get picked? In his time at Arsenal Rosicky has trousered over £23million whilst doing 2/3 of f**k all. In short he's a typical Wenger player - technically brilliant but lightweight, inconsistent weak and massively overpaid!

  34. Sebastian

    Feb 25, 2013, 10:20 #32584

What I also love about Rosicky is that he never publicly moans about his lack of playing time and only ever says positive things about Arsenal. In my head its Ramsey that Wenger seems to pick instead, and I can only assume this is because Ramseys career is ahead of him and Rosickys is towards to end, but it should matter, Rosicky is by far the better player. Only behind Cazorla and Wilshere in my eyes, and better than Arteta.

  35. SilverGooner

    Feb 25, 2013, 10:13 #32583

One of Wengers many infuriating flaws is that the form of a player is often irrelevant and he will stick with his 'favourites' even when a)their form dips or b) they are simply not good enough. Fantastic though he is, Cazorla has often looked like he has run out of steam, so who better to step into the team than Tomas Rosicky? Him and Wilshere driving forward from midfield is just what we need. And while we're on the subject of criminal neglect, what about Andrei Arshavin?

Its beyond me that he doesnt play more than he does. He lets diaby and ramsey play instead of him, in my opinion that is not making any sense... he is two or three classes better than those two players. I just dont get it.

  38. Tony Evans

    Feb 25, 2013, 9:32 #32579

One of our better players in the Blackburn debacle yet subbed by Wenger, and only Wenger would pick Ramsey ahead of him in midfield. Obviously he is not one of Wenger's pet players and will no doubt be shown the door in the summer, while the likes of Gervinho continue to flatter to deceive.

  39. chris dee

    Feb 25, 2013, 9:23 #32577

His contact expires in 2014? Jeez it's lucky he got his last one. Tomas epitomises Arsenal over the last 8 years at the Emirates. Skillful, lightweight, defensively inept, cracks under pressure amd injury prone.

    Feb 25, 2013, 8:54 #32574

Injuries or not , Rosicky was our best player in the Blackburn debacle and he should've started against Bayern, especially because he came from Bundes Liga and he would've felt right at home against the German club. Wenger's squad selection and tactics are sub par this days.

  43. james

    Feb 25, 2013, 8:48 #32572

the most annoying thing is that wenger is always in the habit of allowing some of the team's best players to rot and make them look as if they've past their prime while giving undeserving players a chance in the team eg diaby

  44. WrightydenhenryTotally

Have to agree his return to the squad last season gave it a massive boost in the run in to the 3rd spot last season. We need to keep these experienced players even if they are not playing all the time ala Man U
