Can you hear the Arsenal sing?

Does the crowd’s performance directly affect that of the players? Evidence suggests it might.

Can you hear the Arsenal sing?

Make some noise for the boys

The debate goes on with regards to atmosphere - singing and standing - along with the never-ending saga of early leavers. As the season comes to a close and nothing left to play for (except one point to guarantee a top four finish - even though I think our goal difference takes care of this) I can’t help but fear that the fans performance could take a dip (if that's possible) as well as that of the players.

Following a comment that was made to me at the Man City game I couldn't help but look back over the season (in terms of our fans’ performance, not the team’s) and evaluate where we could be going wrong. And sadly a few prime examples, of things I have experienced personally, immediately sprang to mind.

The comment made to me against Man City seems the best example to give. Having just gone 3-1 up I was delighted and keen to sing and celebrate our team's third goal. Having been scored by ‘The Beast’ I decided I wanted to sing my favourite Baptista song... "We signed him from Madrid, he hates the F*** ing Y***". After just this one line the bloke next to me said "I think you're on your own mate". I promptly replied, "I couldn't care less, at least I'm singing". I couldn't believe the nerve of this so-called supporter. Having acknowledged I was singing alone why did he not give me some backing and join in? Someone has to sing alone otherwise how will a song ever get started? I don't want to be too judgemental as various members do join in the songs but I know for a fact that this particular seat is not one belonging to a season ticket holder and if it is going to be filled by a red or silver member can I please have one who sings... I have no time for wasters like him. Let a real fan watch the game... however I am digressing.

The point I am making is that in a "meaningless" match against poor opposition like Man City fans seem to drop their standards, similar to the team. Looking back Man Utd and Spuds at home this season have been the best atmospheres. And in turn the team have responded with excellent performances and results. So I can't help but feel if we raised our game for the likes of M'Boro, Everton and West Ham could we in turn make the team raise their performance to match ours?

If you feel the answer is yes I have one big ask... against Fulham and Chelski (which much to my annoyance I'm sure will be easy) can you please sing up, as loud as you can, to back the boys in Red and White. If you hear someone singing on their own don't tell them, join them. The reason I say it will be easier against Chelski (much to my annoyance) is that fans criticise the players for lack of effort in the smaller games, yet most of our fans do the same. To me three points are three points which makes every game a big game. And on that note an excellent atmosphere against Fulham would be more satisfactory than one against Chelski as you know that fans have raised their game and tried their best to create some noise. Reading about the group of fans who will be in Block 19 for the Fulham game raises my hopes that we really can get the crowd, and in turn the team, going.

Which leads me to my final point. I recently received my season ticket renewal form for which the price (as ever) makes you want to cry, especially when you add on the amount you pay for transport, food, drink and away games. So therefore let's all make every penny count, let's make the fee our club charge us worthwhile. Let's sing our hearts out, from 15 minutes before kick off until the final whistle (please can we have no early leavers and if we do can we not sing "we can see you sneaking out", "I'm always here for 90 minutes, here for 90 minutes...." or something to that effect to make them feel awkward and guilty about what they are doing?) and let's hope we have three points in the bag!
