This September marks the 100th anniversary of Arsenal’s move to North London and to mark the occasion we have a wonderful print of our magnificent Highbury home to give away courtesy of artist Steve Welsh.
We featured Steve in an issue of The Gooner last season after he had produced a stunning image of David Rocastle. Steve is a Middlesbrough fan who drew for the Boro fanzine Fly Me To The Moon, but he also has a wide-ranging football portfolio which can be viewed at miniboro.com and includes other Arsenal related prints. His artwork is eye-catching and often uses cryptic references to the players features, such as his Top Gun-themed piece for Dennis Bergkamp.
The 80cm x 60cm canvas frame print we are giving away is a view of Highbury at the centre of the local streetmap and includes a Herbert Chapman quote in the bottom right hand corner – “Whoever heard of Gillespie Road… It’s Arsenal around here” – which he uttered during his quest to change the name of Gillespie Road tube station to Arsenal. The date, for those that are interested, coincides with the errection of the North Bank roof.
The piece was created as part of a “Homesick” series featuring grounds which are no longer used and was on display at the recent Fantasista exhibition of football art in London.
To enter all you have to do is send an email to [email protected] with your name and address or, if you are on Twitter, make sure you are following @GoonerFanzine and retweet the competition tweet before the closing date, which is midnight on Friday 2nd August.
