Arsenal leave me scratching my head

Cesc: New Robbo?

When I last wrote, on the eve of our double over Man Utd, I firmly believed a glittering trouncing of the Champions-elect followed by a consistent run-in à la 2002 of breathtaking annihilation of all opposition would make anyone at the top crumble.

Then, it seemed, we had found some form. We'd re-discovered our style. We'd re-learned what consistency might again be. Previously I stated that we didn't have a natural born goal-scorer and I felt Aliadière with the Beast could prove to be the dynamic duo. They showed early glimpses that my prophecy could be fulfilled, as did our win over ManU. Neither proved long lasting.

So what went wrong? Was it the terrible officials at the Carling Cup Final who denied us victory that brought morale down in the same fashion as losing at old Trafford sucked the wind out of our invincible sails in 2004? Or is it something more?

Sometimes, I find myself frustrated watching the team we all love. The fluent early pass and move is rarely there. We finally do an imitation of it but it's no sharp knife through butter, more a spoon in melted Brie. Passes to the wing are delayed as we run through midfield too often then finding ourselves unable to pass sharply back to the middle until we are too deep and the opposition has mustered. We are not incisive enough.

Are we tactically flawed or is the personnel not quite up to the challenge? Is it the wrong mix or just too much youth still needing to mature or the team still needing to gel?

We are too Fabregas reliant, as with Bobby Robson on his namesake Bryan – the hub and spoke principle. If Cesc isn't there, our passing breaks down. I look at the quality of players and this should not be the case. This makes me wonder if we are tactically flawed. Wenger doesn't have the master substitution. I don't think it is Senderos for Hleb somehow, that transforms a game.

Then, the past week's boardroom shuffles have left me wondering, scratching my head. Good or bad to have Kroenke buy the club? Frankly, I think I'd like to see Dein back and if he's appointed Chairman or CEO under Kroenke and there's money to help an upgrade, I think I'd take that option.

While Wenger most likely won't buy significantly in the summer, and why should he if the youth can deliver, and there's so much still to come through; a Ribery, an Adriano, a Kaka; something more solid in defence or an outstanding midfielder - I remain unsure of Diaby's consistency (plus he slips a lot) and a goalkeeper like Gomes would all be quite welcome. The Beast and Aliadière, they had their moments. They haven't done enough to ask for more.

For once at Arsenal, the pre-season looks likely to be as interesting as the whole of next season. Somehow I believe Arsenal will have an exciting season. After all, Arsenal can't leave me scratching my head for too long, can they?
