Mind the Gaps

The positions where Arsenal are currently falling short

Mind the Gaps

Begovic – He’ll do

Arsène Wenger has said on a number of occasions that for a team to compete for the season, they need two players for every position. Based on this and the 25-man squad we have to register for the Premier League, if another goalkeeper is added (so that there are three), a defender who can play anywhere across the back four is added, and an attacking player who can play in any of the front-four positions (attacking midfielder, attacking midfielder left, attacking midfielder right, striker) is added, we have a squad of 25. So how do Arsenal measure up and do we really need Rooney, Higuain or for Cesc to come back? This is based on Arsenal's current 4-2-3-1 formation.

Goalkeepers (three)

Szczesny – potentially a great goalkeeper and a very good number two, but not number one material for another year or two. If he had someone he was trying to oust from a position who could also teach him, it could be the making of him. He should be playing as goalkeeper for all League Cup and FA Cup games, as well as games in the Champions League where we have qualified from the group already. If this is the case, and we should still not lose any of these games from errors he has made, he will make a great number two.

Fabianski – history doesn't show a good goalkeeper here for me, but the end of last season seemed to show a change. I think having him as a number three (if he were to play all reserve games to keep somewhat sharp) isn’t the worst thing and, considering we don't have a number one, buying a number 3 isn't a priority now and Fabianski can fill that role adequately, I think.

Needed - a number one keeper such as Cesar from QPR or similar. This would improve our defensive record and push Szczesny without making him feel he has no hope of becoming number one – he would be in two or three years. Begovic would be a great number one, but that might mean Szczesny never becoming number one due to Begovic's age

Defenders (nine)

Right-backs (two)

Sagna – a quality player, was the best right-back in the Premier League for a while, but has lost it a bit. I would give him a two-year extension, by which time Jenkinson would be ready to be our number one right-back and we could be buying a reserve right-back, but it means we are fine in this department for another two or three years

Jenkinson – came on by leaps and bounds last year and I think this year will be even better. I would start him in more home games and against pacy wingers, since Sagna has lost some pace. He should be first choice right-back in two years at most. We have two quality right-backs.

Needed – no one

Left-backs (two)

Gibbs – last year showed what he can do and is ever improving. No issues putting him on the team-sheet as first-choice left-back and he will only get better. Quality for years to come.

Monreal – a very good second choice who could be played against slower wingers to give Gibbs a bit of a rest every now and then. We have two quality left-backs.

Needed – no one

Centre-backs (four)

Big Friendly German – opinion is divided on this and my dad actually doesn't rate him, saying he is slow and clumsy. However, I think he brings a calming presence to the back four and his partnership with Koscielny for the back end of last season was great. He does need a quicker defender as his partner but for me is first-choice centre-back.

Koscielny – his goal last year was great, but for me a defender's main job is to defend, and towards the end of last year Koscielny did just that! He is a very good player who will get better the more he plays. Seems to be the best partner for the BFG and it will be interesting to see if they start this season as first choice (based on last year, I can't see how they don't).

Vermaelen – when we bought him, we all thought “wow – what have we got here!” but last year he fell victim to the apparent “captain's curse”, and whilst he isn't leaving us to join a team that without him wouldn't have won the league, he isn't the same as he was. Stripping him of the captaincy might restore his confidence and give us our player back, but it could also be negative. Currently, he is not first choice for defence and it seems he can play with the BFG but not with Koscielny (see results last year). Things can change, but currently for me he is a good first-choice back up if something happens to our main centre-backs.

Needed - a first choice centre back – as much as I like the BFG, I would prefer a defender who, apart from being big, strong and good in the air, also has pace, since today's game is very dependent on it. I think having the BFG and Vermaelen as two back-up defenders would leave us with a very good squad at the back and, if we can find a high-quality centre-back to play with Koscielny, I would be delighted and we would be very strong. I don't think Williams from Swansea is the answer and I think we missed a chance with Touré on a free. Who to buy? I would buy Skrtel and I think he could be bought for £10-15 million

Needed – a defender who can play anywhere across the back four and would be possibly an up- and-coming player with some experience, maybe 20 or 21 years old. No idea who to buy, maybe Miquel can fill this role from the academy.

I can't reply to each person individually, and we're not all going to agree so i'm not going to go into point by point re-analysis with everyone. Just wanted to me 3 points: 1. Those mentioning positions I have left out in the team (centre mid, striker, etc) they will be covered in part 2. 2. The point of the article is try and prioritise what is needed. That doesn't mean we couldn't do better in every position, it means based on the 70 million where should we be spending our money this season. 3. As will be seen from part 2, the reason I wrote this was because I think the fact the fans have been saying we need a star signing who is experienced, has got through to the board and AW in terms of the fact at least they are making noises about signings this year, which is an improvement on last year. HOWEVER, i feel the obsession with buying a STAR PLAYER who costs over 25 million, has lead most fans, unintentionally to give the impression that 1 star signing will make things ok for the time being - the truth is if we look at what's needed i'd rather the message being given was BUY A GK for 10-15 million and a DF for 15-20 million WAY BEFORE BUYING SUAREZ because those positions are BIGGER PRIORITIES. Not saying we don't need a player as good as suarez, just saying there are other more important purchases to make first and the sooner the fans can not only realize this, but give this message across, the more likely we will get the type of signing we need, instead of what the board think will placate us (i.e. an expensive striker).

Great performance by the boys today at times they made City look very ordinary. The likes of Ron MARCUS Peter Wain and Tony Evans will no doubt say it was all meaningless but if we'd have lost they would have a field day in their usual gunner bashing.

Begovic is too obvious a call for OGL much better than the GK we have this is the man that deemed Almunia good enough to play for us over 100 times.Every transfer window any player sold pretty much gets replaced by a cheaper signing our club's board a shambles the manager a man that's judgement on players of quality is shot to pieces. Why does he always sign unknown, cheap players from inferior leagues that become overpaid & impossible to shift the ratio of success not very high. His acolytes point to his actual net spend totally missing the point his wastage has been the wage bill where he has wasted tens of millions yearly. The deadwood signed of his making Bendtner great example. We stand a week before the season starts a threadbare squad in numbers & quality. The manager is a charlatan should of walked for sure two years ago as no one has the balls to sack him.Football has moved on transfer fees are ridiculous but you have to pay the market rate for decent quality & I am not talking about £40m strikers.Europe is financially busted plenty of players around at reasonable fees that would improve our team let alone squad. Our club swimming in available cash £10m up in this window & maybe 300k-400k freed up on the wage bill. The signing I fear most of all come the window shutting is the announcement in autumn of OGL getting a new contract after 8 years of failure. We have accepted we can't compete to actually win anything under this regime. The socialist wage bill & the highest paid person at the club the man that is holding us back.If your tactically exposed as a manger which he has been at least surround yourself with quality players to bail you out.One win against top 6 opponents last year & he expects us to improve utter insanity.

Lets hope we get well and truly stuffed by the Mancs today - not that I advocate self harm but it may just wake AW from his slumbers and force a last minute trolley dash, like OT 2 years ago

The thing missing at the moment from all these blogs is actual PL match results - once these start coming in I can see real unrest. I think Wenger and the board will finally publicly split, then a late August flurry of panic buys will usher in the next crop of players like Santos. I trust everyone has noted that Miquel has gone on loan to Leicester for the season. This is our football club going through the "throws" of managerial chaos and irrational decision making, rather like the last days of Bertie Mee and Terry Neil. It may last weeks, I pray it does not last years but I sense the beginning of the end of the current regime. It should have been done and dusted years ago but thankfully the process has started and it will gain it's own momentum. I, like many others hope that we will see the end of the passive coaching and romantic philosophies that have blighted our club for the last 5 - 6 years. A new hard nosed professional win at all costs attitude is required but I fear it may take some empty stadiums before the board finally take the necessary action required.

Agree with pretty much everything. Although I wouldn't care about upsetting Szczesny to be honest. This is a Premiership Football Club, not a counselling meeting! The guy is too arrogant for his own good, and have found that if a shot is hit on target, it tends to go in against him. Look how many goals he let in last season that went in pretty much in the middle of the goal. Doesn't seem like the sort of bloke that would accept advice or criticism either.

OGL's transfer technique reminds me of the guy who comes to buy Bart's Elephant in the Simpsons.................I need a large African elephant, and I need it today. But I'm afraid this just isn't what I'm looking for. What do you mean? It's an elephant, isn't it? Well, it is and it isn't, if you understand what I mean.

Great article, copletely agree with your assesment (I a am a bit of a BFG and Schez fan). Since your bound to write that we need a DM in the second part, I remembered an idea I read on this website - why not try out TV5 at that position. His skill with the ball is great for a defender and in a more forward position he will be able to take a bigger part in our attacks (IMO this desire makes him a liability as a CB). TV5 is one of the precious few Arsenal players with a win-at-any-cost attitude and we can not afford to leave him out of the starting XI.

Gary, in your opening sentence, I think you’ve misunderstood the meaning of Wenger saying we need two players for every position to compete. What this actually means is we need two players in every position so that we can fulfil our fixtures when injuries and suspensions kick in. We have two players for every position, just like every other club in the league has. Thankfully, we aren’t hamstrung to this ideal, as Wenger can magic up ‘internal solutions’ whenever a crisis looms. Your analysis seems fair enough, but for a squad that claimed our coveted 4th place yet again, the pinnacle of all our ambitions, is there any need to change anything? Looks like Wenger really does know what he’s doing this transfer window.

We couldn't beat Galatasaray at home so here's hoping we won't get past Fenerbache. I seriously hope we lose to them so Wenger gets the lesson of his life. The man's got no testosterone left, no passion for winning. He's a schoolteacher masquarading as a football coach. It's time to retire his scrawny old French balls.

The spine from head to toe needs a total overhaul. The artical misses two key positions the combative defensive midfielder and the 30 goal a season striker.Wenger will only buy crap from the reduced item shelf when the window has 5 mins to go.Personally I'd sign the Brazilian Fred who knows where the net is but wouldn't be that expensive.

from a defensive point of view two names of established premier league players with proven ability, jagielka (yes try for him again )versatile and can even play in goal if needed as we can painfully remember ! the other one is a man at his peak of form and confidence Baines, which could free Gibbs to play left side when he is free from injury . what about 50 mill for 3 everton players ,seems more value for money than he who was never coming in the first place, how about that for fiscal prudence Arsene ?

Look folks we have a deluded manager who seems to somehow forgotten that we had a awful season last season. We had a 1 in 12 head to head record against the top 6 last season but this man seems to have forgotten that. If you keep doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result, when has that worked before?? We are doomed folks, why does this man keep giving chances to average players smh,smh i.e RAMSEY what in the hell does he see in that guy. The is so average its turing into a joke. Wenger is slowly destroying this club footballing wise and I for on want him gone. I have lost alot of respect for the man and he needs to go ASAP. He has been at arsenal for 16 years as he loves to say well your first 8 years where good the other 8 years have been a failure especially his PROJECT YOUTH LOOOOOOOOOOOOL. That has been a abject failure there are no two ways about it. ITS FAILED WENGER THE DEAR LEADER. THE MAN IS A COMMUNIST AND A SOCIALIST WHO IS WORSHIPED BY THE AKB'S

could not disagree more on the left back situation. Gibbs positional play is very poor has no idea how a back four works and is totally out of his depth in the premiership. Monreal given a roasting against a third choice scummer last season. We do need a top quality left sided defender as well as eight other recruits no of which we will get. this is going to be a good season for bonuses as we already are in profit in the transfer window.

It's a shame but I have gotten to the point where I dont expect any world class singings from OGL and his money-grabbing board. It almost seems as if spending time to write about potential transfers is a complete waste of time.I love my Arsenal so much it's unbearable to see what it's being turned into. It's too painful.*Sob sob*.From where I stand, there is only one way to make our voices heard.Boycott tickets! No joke! *For Heaven's sake STOP renewing your season tickets*

when you say 'no-one needed' I assume it's because you think there are more pressing needs, rather than that the current players are world class, because they aren't. Who plays for Arsenal who'd get a game regularly for Bayern, for example? Possibly Koscielny, who I think could be a really good CB with better coaching and less shaky partners in defence.

Spot on regarding the keeper situation, and it has been done to death on here over the years. Szczesny has potential that's all, and that's a word that has been associated with this team for far to bloody long now, it's always potential with everything, how many players are we still waiting on to fulfill this potential, the 100k a week man a good example among others. I wouldn't be in the least surprised if wenger instructed Rob the chef to have a potential menu in the players canteen and when they've had everything of that they can then progress to a different one only they never do. Yes Gary your spot on regarding the keeper situation an experienced one is needed and has been for years. But there's one area you forgot to mention, the keeper coaches, they are nowhere near good enough and need replacing and have done for a long time, the crap displays of the waiter, szczesny, flappy, mannone, can't be coincidence there has to be a reason, (although i still wouldn't have flappy anywhere near the place a lost cause) maybe the real reason is that wenger just can't spot a decent keeper the way he can't spot a decent player. We've been calling for an experienced keeper now for years and haven't got one and it's not going to be any different this season no matter what position we discuss because the more we call for something the less chance we have of getting it, because OGL listens to nobody.

Is Iqnasi Miquel a confidence player? I've not seen him play much but was wondering if he's one of those that needs a run of games and finds it difficult to slot straight into a side. I don't mind Mertesaker personally, sometimes the experience makes up for being pacey but caught out of position.

No quality striker at the Club. The left backs are both not good neough and nor are the right backs. Jenkinson seems a great lad, but hes not No 1 full back material. Sagna is past it. There isnt a quality CB at the Club. Rave about Koscheilny all that you want but he lacks it v top forwards. The rest arent worth a mention. The German is rubbish. 6 feet and 5 and cant jump! Wenger bulled up the clown in goal to make him think hes a great keeper. He isnt. Hes average and we need to buy a keeper as we ve not truly had a proper keeper since Seaman. If the Scez doesnt like being No 2 he shd leave. In the midfield we have JW. The rest are all much of a muchness and hence all disposable for the right new signing both in a creative sense an defensive sense. Cazorla dissapers v good sides in just the same way as Hleb did. Rosicky is just sqaud material. The team needs at least 6 first choice positions to be filled and as for the sqaud overall, JW is the only true quality player and lets be honest shall we with him. Hes the next big move sale and the Board will be salivating if he ca get a good injury free season in this time.

Not signing Cesar beggars belief. The bloke was at the heart of a team that won 5 Serie A titles, 3 Coppa Italias and a Champions League title, to add to the 70+ Brazilian caps he has. At 33 it's not like it'll spell the end for Szczesny but equally could have 5 years as number 1 looking at how van der Sar performed into his late 30s. Wages will be pretty high (but not ridiculous) and bearing in mind the transfer fee will be negligible and he wants to stay in London he's basically gift-wrapped. Instead we stick with a talented but arrogant kid who will never get near fulfilling his potential whilst the only competition is recruited straight from the circus. Despite years of being held back by Almunia Wenger has still ignored the fact that Szczesny was costing us goals every other week last season. Personally I think not signing Lloris - quality keeper, perfect age and bags of experience to go with a great attitude and most importantly at a relative snip for what you're getting - will haunt us for the next decade.

It's world cup year, no decent international class goalkeeper (e.g. Cesar)is going to come here unless guarenteed number 1 spot. Similarly, Shezza would be less than happy if someone did. Also, this 25 man squad figure is a bit misleading as under 21's don't have to be included. The crucial point, I believe, is a maximum of 17 non-homegrown and over 21's.

Firstly, may I say that Brian's comments are a total disgrace, and have no place on any forum, and should be immediately removed. I agree with most of what was said in the article, but I also agree with Gary's dad; I think the BFG is a very poor defender; the slowest I have ever seen in over 50 years of watching football. He is 6'4" and 6'5" when he jumps! He has no ability to get off the ground from a standing start, and has a terrible ability to be nowhere near the vicinity of a ball crossed into our area at either a free kick or a corner. He is a 100% liability on a quick breakaway by the opposing team. We definitely need a top class centre back to play with Kos.

    Aug 09, 2013, 15:23 #37247

I agree with the overall premise of this article that in order to be truly competitive in all competitions we need a squad of 25 quality players. I broadly agree with your goalkeeping/defensive "stock-take", though I think we should have bought the best available keeper (which for me was Mignolet), not go for an older option on the assumpton that Szezeney may be as good in a few years' time. I also question whether Miquel has shown enough potential to warrant being part of the 25-man elite unit, especially given his performance against Galatasary and Drogba...

No signings to plug these gaps before the transfer window closes and Wenger should be fired along with his hapless side kick Gazidis: gross dereliction of duty. They're pissing away our inheritance.
