Mind the Gaps Part 2

Concluding part of the analysis of the squad going into the opening League fixture

Mind the Gaps Part 2

Rooney: Better option than Suarez

Arsène Wenger has said on a number of occasions that, for a team to compete for the season, they need two players for every position. Based on this and the 25-man squad we have to register for the Premier League, if another goalkeeper is added (so that there are three), a defender who can play anywhere across the back for is added, and an attacking player who can play in any of the front-four positions is added, we have a squad of 25. So how do Arsenal measure up, and do we really need Rooney, Higuain or for Cesc to come back? This is based on Arsenal's current 4-2-3-1 formation.

Centre Midfield (four)

Mikel Arteta – he is a very important player for us at the moment and for the last two years he has done very well in what is arguably not his best position. However, I feel he isn't quick enough, and there are times our defence lacks protection because he isn't able to get back, or players go past him too quickly. We need someone quicker in this position. However, for me, he is a more than adequate first reserve and could be brought in for certain games to give the first-choice pair a break at crucial moments in the season.

Aaron Ramsey – my dad has been in love with Ramsey forever. I have to say that I have hated Aaron Ramsey as an Arsenal player for a long time. Misplaced passes, can't score, wasted chances, doesn't see the right option many times – and then the second half of last season happened, and he became a player I admire greatly. Maybe it has taken longer than we all though it would since that horrific incident at that rugby club, but in the second half of last season Aaron was one of our stand-out performers. I definitely think it is no coincidence this is happening when he is playing in his best position instead of wide right or even in the hole. Aaron has a tireless engine, is getting better at finding the right pass and even scored against Wigan last year! This coming year could well be his best season for us, and I have no hesitation putting him in as a first-choice centre midfielder.

Abou Diaby – another one my dad and I disgree on – or, should I say, disagreed on. He's hated him and thinks Diaby is useless. I, however look at performances like Anfield away last year and see the potential. The problem is he doesn't seem to be able to play without getting injured. If it wasn't for his injuries, I think we'd have a great player, and playing him instead of Mikel would give us more strength and direct running in the middle. But the injuries are taking their toll, and we need a squad who can play almost all year, not be injured for half of it. I would send him on loan for one year (while he gets fit) and tell him if he can play for a whole season on loan without getting injured, then we would have him the following season, but if he can't play one year without injuries, we have to sell him.

Emmanuel Frimpong – I really like him and so do a lot of fans. However, I am cautious because he was a player showing fight and heart when we had a team which didn't do that and for this reason he stood out. Taking that apart and putting it to the side (though it is important) I don't think he has shown enough to be a first-teamer yet. I would say one year of being on loan (again with no injuries) and then come back and play for us, or sadly it is a reluctant goodbye.

Jack Wilshere – a quality player and, if he can stay fit, he will become unbeatable. I would have him in centre midfiled alongside Aaron, but there is also an option to play him in the hole further forward. I think his tackling and fighting means he is needed in the middle rather than further forward, and he breaks forward anyway. A first-choice player who can play in multiple positions.

Needed – two centre-midfielders, both holding players. I don't know why we haven't bought Fellaini, especially when his preferred position (apparently) is as a holding midfielder. Diamé looks interesting but I'm worried he's another Song and will go forward too much. Having said that, if we bought those two and had Aaron and Jack, I think we'd have four very good central midfielders to choose from and could also open up the idea of a 4-4-2 system.

Wings and in the hole – I've done this as one category since in most cases (with one or two exceptions), the players listed here can play in any of the three positions listed.

Tomas Rosicky – a high-quality player who can be decisive. Staying fit is an issue but the last two seasons he has played important roles. Not one for the future, but no need to replace and whilst his best position is in the hole, can do a job on either flank. A very good squad player to have who can come on and have a positive impact on games.

Santi Cazorla – the most talented player we currently have on the books! Can play with either foot, scores, assists – everything. I do think he goes missing sometimes in some games, and whilst there are exception, he usually plays better when the sun is out than in the winter (I know there are two or three exceptions). Preferably playing in the hole, can play either wing and spent the second half of last year on the left. For me, a first-choice player as playing in the hole.

Ryo Miyaichi – not seen much of him but not overly impressed so far. I think he was bought for marketing rather than football reasons, but that may be a little harsh. I'd say a season or two on loan and then make a decision but definitely not ready this year.

Alex OC – an explosive, exciting player, one of the few who runs at people and shoots outside the box. I thought he should have had more game times last year, but this year I would have him as my first choice left-winger. I know he can play in a number of positions but Lukas seems to have fitness issues (doesn't do 90 minutes) and I think starting with Alex and bringing on Lukas for the left wing in a rotating format could give them both lots of game time and provide us with two good left-wingers.

Lukas Podolski – personally, I don't think Lukas is good enough to lead the line. As a left winger he tracks back and works very hard, giving protection, which is important. He chips in with a number of goals, but he isn't the man to lead the line. He may not like it but I think this is his best position for us, though he can be a “back-up” striker if needed.

Theo Walcott – my dad doesn't rate him; I do. I even have a bet with my bro on this year that Theo will get 25 goals in all competitions (5 up from last year). He is a good player on the right wing and can come inside to create a lopsided 4-2-2-2 as he did from time to time last year. I think if we played 4-4-2 with him and Giroud, we would have a very potent attack (see team below) but based on our current formation, I have to put him as a first- choice right-winger for now – but able to play in the middle against smaller team or if we go 4-4-2.

Needed – with Tomas and Santi being in the hole and the Ox and Theo being out wide, we need a right winger, and someone who play across all the positions. Players like Isla (Udinese), Gaitan (Benfica) look interesting and Hoilet (who we were once after) could be interesting but I don't know if he is good enough yet.

Strikers (two)

Yaya Sanogo – too early to tell and not in my first team squad this season. I'm sure he'll play some games in the league cup and maybe go out on loan, but not one for this year.

Marouane Chamakh – useless. Sell him now!!!!!

Nicklas Bendtner – useless. He's been given plenty of chances, and if someone else was given the chance he had in Barcelona we might have gone through. He should play at the level he is, not what he thinks he is – Championship. Sell him now!!!!

Gary's dad, I don't think wenger is in the least bit interested about placating or satisfying the fans, or what they want, and less concerned or interested in what they think, we all know ogl will not be told what to do. He's more concerned and interested in his pet project/projects, like buying complete dross in the hope one day they'll come good and the one closest to his heart at the minute, and one he's never ever going to give up on as long as he remains at this club, (regardless of what he has to spend) winning something on the cheap and proving everybody wrong so he can tell the world, there i told you so, you don't need to spend big to win something. What that would do to his ego doesn't bare thinking about.

I totally agree with the Squad Needs and without doubt we are Short in all depts. but the two positions we should fill now without question would be a New Board Member pref David Dein And a New Manager pref Dennis Bergkamp. We are going to struggle big time this Season and yet the Opportunity for success is up for grabs.

Have read my son's articles with interest, and the comments from all you committed Gooners. The truth is that AW seems to feel any marquis signing at inflated fee and wages will satisfy the fans and placate the growing frustration. He has spent money in recent years - Cazorla (a great buy), BFG (absolute waste of space cos he is too slow, poor in the air for a guy of 6ft 4, & could not tackle Gary's 4 year old daughter), Podolski (panic buy after selling RVP, and not fit enough to play 90 mins, but he is a trier!), Giroud who I think will be a revelation this season), Chamahk ('nuff said), Gervinho (dud), and others. He needs to spend wisely, not just spend. Most of us seem to realise that our problems are in the defensive third of the pitch...not the attacking third. I don't want to be one of those "it's not as good as it was in my day" merchants, but don't we sometimes wish for "1-0 to the Arsenal" days. Blimey, we can't even be confident when we are leading 3 or 4 nil!! Shore up the defence, get a top class international keeper and we will be back winning silverware. By the way TV5 as defensive midfielder is something I have been advocating for the past 2 years.

Please explain how you can hate a player that suffered a horrendous injury, was badly affected by the Gary Speed tragedy and then had the Welsh captaincy taken from him?

Its often stated on here that Santi goes missing in the big games, but personally i think its more a case of stature than bottle,we must have one of the smallest lightweight midfields in the league, and when we come up against the better teams they generally have the nous as well as muscle to nullify his effect. In years gone past the more artistic flair players were asigned a minder to look after them should someone decide to kick them off the pitch, but this isnt possible in todays side as we dont have a paddy, stevie williams, mickey thomas or peter storey type player, as i say its all a bit lightweight let alone the chocolate ankles which in turn means no-one will consider leaving the foot in.I know that he's not everyones favourite but for my money tommy v would make a far better def mid player than cb and would add a touch of steel to the ranks. Its the goalkeeping position that worries me most,we will always score goals but keeping them out will always be a problem with fingers furnell chesney and no credible back up

Unfortunately what we need and what we get are two different things entirely. We have needed a strong midfielder since PV4 left a 30 goal a season striker since TH14 a great goalkeeper since Jens I know he was off the wall but he was a very good keeper, lastly a domineering centre back TA6,Keown or Uncle Bouldy and what did we get yep bugger all.

Hmm: Just seen Guardian correspondent Fernando Duarte tweeting that if Le Boss can sign Luiz Gustavo it would be like having a 2002 Gilberto Silva in the squad. If only: I'm not holding my breath though.

Marcus. What is your definition of 3 quality signings? What would make me not back Wenger is not that easy to answer, as it depends on the teams all round performance in all competitions. I could say If Wenger fails to get us into the top 4 he should go, but then he could go and do a Chelsea and win the Champions league or a couple of domestics. So the question is really a non sequitur, until the end of the season..

Jamie look, I will answer your question. In order for me to get behind Lord Wenger this season he has to buy atleast 3 quality signings that will enable us to contend at the top I'm not demanding trophies as that is not a guarantee for any team but show some ambition to put yourself in a position to contend. See I answered your question now you answer mine. WHAT WILL IT TAKE FOR YOU TO FINALLY REALIZE WE NEED A CHANGE AT ARSENAL I.E A NEW MANAGER see simple question

Marcus. First tell me what you would want Wenger to achieve this season for you to get behind him again. When you call Wenger a busted flush you are wrong, as that denotes someone who has never achieved anything only shows promise.

It will be a long winter should quality additions not arrive. The strength of your squad so important in the modern game. When your squad becomes so lacking in depth that even if you get lucky with injuries players get complacent they know if they are not pushed for their place it's easy to coast through a game or two competition for places keeps players on edge to perform.Maybe OGL has been given a retro 'Match of the day' dvd set.I can see it now sitting on his sofa in North London parka at the ready, bottle of water in hand waiting for the new season.Puts on the 1980/81 season dvd Aston Villa win the league with a squad consisting of only 14 used players....forget the youth project.....I have a cunning plan!

Regardless of who or what we need it's OBVIOUS the emergency AGM over at AKB central command has finished, and after many ideas were put forward and much debate, a decision was taken on what the latest excuse for their messiah would be, and after a vote it was unanimous that the most popular one was, that he didn't and doesn't need to spend any money anyway because the team and squad we have are good enough to win the league.

Jamie I knoe your a big admirer of Lord Wenger and last time you was on here, I asked you a simple question to answer and you ignored it. So I will ask you it again, what would it take for you to finally realize that Wenger is a busted flush and needs to go. See its a simple question no insults just a simple answer would do. MARCUS. You sound like a complete ignoramus, You say that if Arsenal sign a class DM and striker we are in deep deep trouble. So in your logic if we don't sign anybody we should be ok. Also Aaron Ramsey has been our most consistent player over the last 8 months so why pick on him, plus the season starts in 6 days not two weeks. I've told you before to stop messing with LSD and you won't have such horrifying hallucinations.

@ISH - I'm glad you mentioned Schneiderlin. After our tough - talking transfer hombres were shooed away from Illaramendi by Real Madrid, he was my next favourite option for that position. Very calm, good positioning, clean tackler but prepared to commit a foul and take a card when necessary in order to break an opposition move. He was a major factor in Lallana and Cork doing so well last season, they had a very good "minder" in there with them.

Look I knew you folks would place all your hope based on the last 10 games of last season smh, smh. That is a big mistake as we faced teams we should be beating lol. Look if Wenger does buy a class DM, and class striker at least we are in big,big trouble. I expect the spuds to be a big,big threat again. We barely got fourth last season oh yeah by one point and wenger seems to be ok with that, what a numpty. The result against man city means nothing. Come match day when it really counts it will not be that easy. Ramsey for me is still a liability I just dont rate the kid. Arteta is clearly not a DM as he lacks the necessary pace and power to play that position. Again I dont have that much hope as look we have only two weeks remaining and still no one has come absolute disgrace!!!!!!!!!! We will be battling for fourth as usual and seeing the same celebrations we saw last season

There we are again Gary that word potential, my god if we're waiting for Diaby to fulfill his we're in more trouble than we think, there's only one place we should be sending him, do you honestly not think we've wasted enough time (and money) on him ? I agree with your dad on the 100k a week man if only he could play the game as good as he can talk it. Sanogo, will take some time to fulfill his potential alright whether we're still alive to see it is another thing. Conclusion, to many players with potential yet to be fulfilled if it ever is.

phew! what a lengthy article! well done Gary. Bottom-line is, we haven't sold enough (at least 4 other players should have left the club this summer) and haven't bought enough (sanogo?! good grief!). Analyzing the same players we have seen the last 4 seasons wont change anything. Ramsey wont become a scoring machine, neither will Walcott or oxlade. No amount of training or years of experience will get more out of those players: they are what they are.

    Aug 11, 2013, 13:23 #37312

Although I agree with some of the points you have made, a lot of them are not thought through decisions that will benefit the team. I have ? points: 1. You obviously don't understand the impact that Arteta has on performances? He is often defensively poor but that is something that Ramsey has indeed helped him improve. However for attacking purposes as well as tempo he is vital, this is because he dictates the play in a different way to our other players. 2. Anyone who 'hates' a player (Ramsey) because of a few misplaced passes is an idiot, period. 3. A defensive midfielder won't just solve all our problems. The game has changed and teams defend in units now. Also Fellaini is a box to box player (if you've ever seen him play) he could play along side Arteta maybe but he wouldn't be able to start passing moves now would he? 4. What is your obsession with the 4-4-2 formation? Nobody uses that anymore for good reason. Even the invincible used at 4-4-1-1 formation, the team kept this until 2009 when the current 4-3-3 was imposed. Wenger copies successful teams i.e. Barcelona 4-3-3 and now Bayern/Dortmund 4-2-3-1 variant. 5. Wenger is finally going to spend some money (Suarez) and you want him to get the sort of signings that have led him to get ridiculed in the past? Skrtel for £12.5m won't happen, but if it did people like you would still complain that Wenger hasn't signed 'big names'. 6. The team you have arrived at is NOT a league winning team - Begovic, Skrtel and Fellaini may be good players but they are not better than our current players. Don't judge that comment now, judge it in 6-12 months. Rooney would be a good addition but we won't get him. In conclusion your article is just something any fan could think up. Its just you want to buy players you think are good but actually aren't much better than our own. Thank you for trying.

To those who have taken issue with me saying I hated Ramsey, I would point out, that had you read the article properly, you would see that I openly changed my opinion of him by the end of last season. Hate may be a strong word and I take that on board, but the point is those having a go at me for saying he was a bad player, miss the point that i now think he can do well for us (which i clearly stated). As for those who defend Arteta - please watch this season and look out for the fact that he will fail to chase back due to lack of pace, or be "skinned" by someone due to lack of pace and that will cost us a goal. That is why I think if we bought in Fellaini, Arteta would become a first reserve since it would be Fellaini and Wilshire in centre mid, not Fellaini and Arteta.

I think you completely underplay Rosicky's role in the team. He is far from a squad player, many would go as far as to say he is the most complete player we have and when fit, is a shoe-in for the first team. The partnership between him and Cazorla is arguably the most important in the team because they compliment each other so well. Wilshere at the moment is far from ready to take either of their places in the team.

Jamie, allow me to expand further. Are you one of those people who believe Sky when they tell you that our league is the very very best in the whole world ever of all time, or are you like me who thinks that the standard right now is pretty p**s poor........the only reason we are still where we are is because although we have steadily declined year by year, 15 other sides in the league have declined a bit more.........and no way are City and United looking worse. BTW I'm a white-collar middle class professional who came up through the ranks but not sure what anyone's employment has to do with the price of fish.

Good Article.....Agree with most of what's written.... Totally pointless....... Wenger will not buy a New goalkeeper, 2 defenders, 2 midfielders and a striker before season start. He will NOT spend another penny prior to season start. Arsenal fans still live in a alternate dream world where we are competing with Chavski, Citeh and Utd. We're not... Get over it.

We have no idea how these players will perform with a proper coach. You can condemn the obviously hopeless, but many of these players, including Ramsey, have had to try and win against the odds under a regime which, for example, thinks the answer to midfield stability is to stick attacking midfeilders in the role and pretend that they can do the job. Whilst therfore I admire the optimism of this article, it does miss the fact that Mr Wenger is no longer capable of buying or using players effectively. For those of us who feel the inertia and opression of the regime very strongly, I can recommend old videos of Match of the Day, which I had the foresight to record in pre-Wenger days. This morning I have been watching a game in which Tony Adams and Steve Bould were flanked by N Winterburn and L Dixon. Adams and Bould scored an excellent goal together from a strategy which they had prepared in advance. It looked like, and was, professional.

@wearebuildingateamtodominate. Arsenal score well over a 100 goals each year in all competitions so I can't see what your problem is with that figure. Do we need all these extra players? Not at all! Wenger knows what he's doing and doesn't need a load of plumbers, builders and second hand car dealers to tell him otherwise. If this is the worst Arsenal team since 95 then where does that leave City, Manure and the spuds who all look far worse than this team. Go back in your AAA bubble with the rest of the clowns and wait for Arsenal's first defeat before you start your negativity fest.

Don't quite see how you can 'hate' Aaron Ramsey. Think he is not right for Arsenal, I might not agree, but if that is you opinion ,fine. But 'hate' is strong word for somebody who tries and was victim to a criminal assault, that all but left him with one foot, until the docs reattached it.

your goal tally's are a little optimistic (JW 10 goals?) well I hope you are right! Skrtel will not be sold to us. Williams is a more realistic target. DM position - I will say this again TV5 once fit should be deployed here, he has the pace, loves to attack the first ball, has enough defensive knowledge, loves to push forward when he can and loves a shot! I see a lot of the qualities that PV4 had and I believe TV5 could really work in that position. Alternative signing Morgan Schneiderlin or Miguel Veloso. Midfielders - virtually all our midfielders can interchange positions AW has done that on purpose. I disbelieve that we need loads of additional midfielders, I'd persoanlly buy Nani (£6-7m) he had no love at united but when he did he was prolific. Striker - Rooney or Suarez, I'd take either of them but would prefer Suarez as he is the one player that scares me as a fan.

Can't believe the optimism on display above Wish I could share some of the Red and White Juice being drunk. I'm afraid I've been looking at a different set of players Do you really place so much faith in the last ten games which were mostly against teams running out of steam and happy to consolidate. Look to Liverpool and Spurs to be much better. As for the top three Arsenal are not even close.

    Aug 11, 2013, 9:09 #37298

Great article! I agree that we need a defensive midfielder badly, 1 should be enough considering that we should be applying relentless pressure to teams at the lower end of the league. In these situations creativity to breakdown defences will be more important than having a good DM. As for strikers, either Rooney or Suarez are great. IMO if either joined they should lead the line but with positional interplay with the two other forwards. I guess Suarez just shades it for me because he makes a more consistent threat on the pitch. They both have their issues but when Rooney gets frustrated it can often affect his game, Suarez who clearly struggles to control himself, doesn't let this affect his performance in the same way. But it's very close. New defender also probably essential given the lack of options exposed by ongoing injuries. I have to say i disagree about your issue with buying Suarez, our team is exposed not because of lack of skill or dicipline or tactic, when Arsenal fail to dominate an opponent they look fragile. I think we should focus on imposing ourselves and making other teams pause because they fear us. Momentum has been gained by Arsenal recently and regardless of who we get or don't get it will not hurt us to make life uncomfortable for our 'rivals'.

"With Giroud and Theo getting 25 goals each this year (in all competitions), Santi 15, Jack 10, Mikel 5, The Ox 5 and Podolski 15, that gives us 100 goals –" LMFAO can you tell me what next week's lottery numbers are going to be too? Ta. As for the article, I'm afraid you're looking through rose-tinted glasses. This squad is the worst we've had since 1994/95, lacking imagination, nous and pace.
