Meaningless win or the shape of things to come?

Theo: Excellent display

I don’t go overboard about pre-season friendlies, win or lose, but it was a pleasant surprise to see Arsenal beat Manchester City on Saturday. Granted, everyone hopes for some new additions of the calibre that will demand a starting place, but by and large, this was a variation of a first choice starting eleven that might take the field when the two teams meet in the league. Santi Cazorla would presumably figure, either behind the striker or in place of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain wide left. If he were to play in the hole, one imagines that Jack Wilshere would drop back and Aaron Ramsey would be on the bench, although my belief is that Wilshere is likely to be the first choice for the advanced central position. In the unlikely event that Arsenal do stump up enough cash to ensure Luis Suarez’ departure from Liverpool, both Podolski and Giroud might find themselves sitting with the subs.

With a thought to the idea that the club are returning to a more British feel – the marketing of the new away shirt dominated by the six domestic players that have been signed up on long term deals – the starting line-up featured five of them. Whether this can bring a more unified feel to the team, a greater sense of spirit and togetherness (especially when things are not going well) remains to be seen. Against City, both Walcott and Ramsey, two players about whom there have been doubts aplenty in the past, played very well. If they can perform like that consistently, things can only get better.

Arsène Wenger has spent several years trying to build a team that matures together and progresses towards success. It hasn’t worked up to this point because the better players do not want to hang around waiting for the project to come to fruition, and in some cases, other prospects have simply not been good enough and failed to justify contracts designed to keep them at the club as they did supposedly improve. There is also a perception that imported players were less likely to feel any sense of loyalty to the club. Certainly, when Arsenal were initially successful under Wenger, there was a significant British core at the club. By the time of the Invincibles, that had been reduced to Sol Campbell, Ashley Cole, Ray Parlour and Martin Keown. Come the stadium move, I have a vague memory we were down to Theo Walcott and the club has not won a trophy since.

Johan Cruyff considered you need a core of five or six domestic players in any successful side, and I can’t think of too many examples where he is wrong. So in this sense, Arsène Wenger looks to have woken up and smelt the roses. As for the season ahead, no-one is happy with the strength in depth of the squad. It’s a no-brainer. Arsenal will surely sign players, but they have made a hash of this summer by passing up the opportunity to bed in new arrivals. So we are down to the supermarket dash, with the feeling being that qualification (or not) for the group stage of the Champions League will determine who is brought in. That’s a dangerous game, and one that the club, with money to burn, did not need to play. Surely better to buy genuine talent early so that they can help the Gunners win the tie against Fenerbahce. But speculating to accumulate has not been Wenger’s way for several seasons.

Cynics might suggest that the delay in buying players early actually saves on wages, and with profit underpinning the philosophy of the club these days (actions speak louder than words), I could actually believe it.

Anyway, if Arsenal can play every week like they did in Helsinki, there will be no reason for complaint. Time will tell…

(Incidentally, there has been a change of heart over the close season, and so it has been decided that I will be posting editorials after matches as previously. However, we will also have the match views from other contributors that used to appear in the printed issue on the website as well, at least when we have volunteers to pen them).

This season’s first issue of The Gooner can be bought outside the stadium before the matches against Villa, Fenerbahce and Spurs. It can also be mailed to you if you wish to buy it online.

I am seriously beginning to think that he will not buy a single player this year. I thought we would get a few middle priced players but now with no sign of anything serious happening its looking like he is going to use the "internal solution¨and promote 5 or 6 youngsters to the squad. Entirely plausible as we know he is a contrary old so and so and this would be the biggest rebuff possible to Gazidis who was spouting off about how big we could now spend. Hope I´m wrong though.

I prey to the Lord we don not get fourth and we have a awful season/ I know that sounds bad but wneger has to go. He is killing this club. He is so deluded and he actually believes what he says when every other REASONABLE UNBIAS person says arsenal is well off from winning the prem or even challenging but not in his DELUDED head smh. He has to go I hope its soon and his not offered a new contract. We need fresh blood i.e Berkamp but his scared of flying or even Klopp

Ted - I would be interested to hear your comments on some of our responses to your posts. I enjoy a good debate even if I disagree with your point of view, which I do. What I would like to know is what you feel the purpose of all Arsenal's profit is? The shareholders do not get dividends and Arsenal is supposed to be a football club so if we are raking in large profits do you not think that some of it should be spent to bolster the squad?

I second Maguiresbridge gooner's comments Kev. Good to have the post-match reports back. As for the win against Man City, as always, EVERY win is welcome and well done to the lads; but, can we beat them when it matters? (at least we should be trying to win at the emirates against the top 3 teams)

Ted is one of those that believe unquestioning loyalty to those currently running the club and blind faith make him a better supporter. Any critique or analysis is 'disloyal' even when self-evident e.g. AFC do not have a strong or deep enough squad to be capable of challenging for honours. He's just not able to distinguish fully between the power brokers at the club and the club itself.

Ted all entitled to our opinions you are happy with the way we are heading great you are so optimistic & showing support I disagree. Not been a season ticket holder for many years can afford to but work commitments etc have tied my hands so to speak.Last year for the first time(other than a year of travelling)since 83/84 was the first season I have not gone to at least one game. The season before last went to maybe 6 or so home games mainly to catch up with old gooner mates.I sadly didn't miss it at all last season when I do go to games I get behind the team 100% my criticism done in the pub before or after the game! The manager & board have sucked all the winning ambition out of the club no if's or buts.We have more ready self made cash than any club in Europe & maybe the world cash all Arsenal fans the world over contributed to money to make the club better. The structure, stadium, training facilities world class but one vital ingredient missing isn't it!Too easy a argument to throw out the can't compete with City etc. we can if we used our resources we choose not to.The ethos to me of Arsenal was we fought often against the odds in our triumphs & when just falling short our ambitions were to win.The ambition currently is to come 4th every year.OGL-'Offer me second place for the next 20 years I would sign for it.'Acceptance you can't win that is negative & I will always challenge that mentality for my football club Arsenal.

Ted like you I've been a supporter for over 40 yrs and have had an ST for the last 27. I've got no intention of giving it up at all. Arsenal is my club and unlike many others who believe the club was invented in 1996, the club will go on post Wenger and I will see him out supporting my club. But do you seriously think it is tenable to go into the season with squad we have and the biggest cash reserve in european football having yet again made a profit and knocked something like 2 million a month off the wage bill? What are the aims of this "extroardinarily ambitious club" given the evident lack of ambition. I would be quite happy if the bank balance was used to slash admission prices. After all how many times have we been told that europes highest admission prices, when we both remember that that pre 2001 we we were one of the cheapest London clubs, were due to our need to compete in the transfer market. Give me examples of when we have competed with any of our rivals for a player in recent times. See you at the Emirates in the hunt for what has now become the holy grail, the FPT.

Ted, the only people who have bottled it are this manager and his players, (and wins in meaningless friendlies haven't changed anything,) i've already mentioned Blackburn and Bradford as a perfect example, you can even go all the way back to Birmingham in the cup final, not to mention all the other bottle jobs. And in your toddle off line you forgot to add what by now has become the first commandment for all your messiah's apologists, go and support the chavs or city. Those who have bottled it and have believed the lie that all isn't well and have given up their season tickets may as well call it a day now,On a personnel note I thank you as the less anti Arsenal in the ground the better, and it has also given many proper fans the opportunity to obtain ST's so thank you for that one. Once the trophies start rolling in again and they will, you won't be able to get into the Emerites for gold dust. And Wenger isn't going anywhere a new five year deal is as good as penned so you may as well toddle of now and turn out the lights.

Ted,I think you struggle to understand where most of us stand on this 'spend' issue. There are a lot of reasonable Gunners out here who strongly believe in the financial stability of our Arsenal. No one is asking Wenger and his band to do a Citeh, a Chelsea or PSG for that matter. Is asking for quality addtions to our paper thin first team too much to ask for a club whose season tickets are the highest in the land? I am sure you already know where Wenger's salary stands in comparison to other managers so I do not have to go into that. If you seriously think we have a title winning team on our hands you have another thing coming.Or maybe you are satisfied with the fact that we have a team that do not show up when it matters most.I am pretty confident that when push comes to shove it will be a different story when we meet Citeh again. I have been a ST holder for close to 27 years and you may not apprecaite how hard this decision was for me but I have decided to not put any more of my money into it until things change. It may not be much but it's all I can do to keep from losing my sanity. *For Heaven's sake STOP renewing your season tickets*

Ted, it's a pity we didn't look like a well oiled machine against Bradford and Blackburn, (not to mention the others) instead of a collection of overpaid second raters, then we might have got to Wembley, with at least a chance to be successful, and not scraped through by the skin of our teeth in front of the spuds into fourth place (again) to lift ogl's imaginary trophy. Is that Dougal and Mrs Doyle i hear in the back ground ? to much drink drink i'm afraid.

I have been a supporter for 48 years. The Wenger years have been the best I’ve ever witnessed. You people are dimwits who simply fail to grasp the bigger picture. You have heard it before so let me repeat it. We have built a new stadium. We have stabilised our finances. We are competing against Russian mobsters and Arab dictators who have ulterior, non-footballing motives for investing in the EPL. And yet some of us ‘deluded’ folk remain optimistic about the future. Don’t claim to speak for any kind of majority that is chomping at the bit to see the back of Wenger. There aren’t that many fools as you think…..

It was obvious Citeh did not turn up and amusing if they carry on where they left off last season - bored and overpaid. They let Arsenal walk the goals in even letting Giroud have his Henry moment as was the case with Ramsey and the on-field spin doctor and all round Beckham type ambassador. Like a happy dog he has his tongue out but if this was for points and Citeh were at 75 per cent Walcott would be no where to be seen. I have seen more competition from a goalie in a pre-match warm-up. Football is never this easy unless the only prize on offer is more money for the select few up the chain. Let's see what Villa make of a familiarly uppity Arsenal that thinks it's a complete product.

we have the weakest squad since the sixties. Thanks to the snake oiled salesman and an indecisive manager we go into this season with no prospect of challenging for anything. Whether we get fourth or not is looking doubtful. How we can have got into this situation with no money spent and so many holes in our squad is ridiculous.

  26. Lord Froth

    Aug 12, 2013, 16:56 #37354

@ Ted - Most of us are not saying that Arsenal should 'spend, spend, spend' in the Chelsea and Man City sense of the word. We are saying spend money that the club has to boost the squad with the quality that anyone who knows anything about football knows that we need. We don't even have a full 25 man squad at the moment and we are an injury and a suspension away from a crisis in both central defense and striking options. Say that Kos gets injured and Giroud picks up a ban, we then have no recognised striker, bar Sanogo, and will be using our first choice right back as the back up central defender. We have 70m in the bank and this is the state of affairs. So Ted, because we played ok in a friendly you believe that this is acceptable do you?

  27. Ted

    Aug 12, 2013, 16:52 #37353

man united killer(supporter). So because Arsenal beat Man City so convincingly I have to say in a friendly, all fans should now give up their season tickets because it doesn't fit in with nominal fans like yourself, jumpers, fozzy's mate, Dan, gooner fan, Ron and Mark's views on the way Arsenal should be run. Your having a laugh! Whatever Arsenal do whether with Wenger in charge or not you guys will find something to gripe about' I think you Anti Arsenal boys have reached that time where it would be better that you parted company with this great football club as you certainly are not contributing in any way to it's betterment.

The result against Man city gives Wenger the perfect excuse to not bring in anyone. Also Diaby will be like a new signing when he takes his occasional leave from the infirmary. In Wenger's mind the team showed great 'mental sthrings'by beating Man City and are good enough to deliver silverware. The man only wants to prove that his methods feasible and he is going to spend the rest of his career trying to prove his point even if it kills him.The only way to make our voices heard is to stop giving them our money.Sad situation but the truth is what it is. *For Heavens sake STOP renewing your season tickets*

Ramsey I have to say did look solid. His pass to Walcott for the first goal and his finishing for his own were unlike him. Good to see he is improving. Still can't believe no one of top class has been brought in yet. How can you not think the club is trying to buy players later to save the wage money? Good point. We are so miserly it's a joke. We will never change under this club regime. No statement of intent where every other top team has bought someone of note. It is so painful to be a fan of this dithering club these last few years, but we endure. Hope I am not now one of the mugs! Some positives from the game. Kos and Bac looked good. The midfield looks ok for now, but up top we need more quality, it is so obvious. Again it is the club and manager's dichotomas statements about eveything that instill no trust and wither the faith. I do have a little excitement though about the Villa game despite the shambles of the summer.

Well according to the supporters that have crawled out of the woodwork since the city result (and indeed others) we're now going to win the league and all round us, we're good enough as we are. The realists know better of course, and know better to think we can play like that every week. Regardless of the result of a meaningless friendly (was there any high fives and bouncing ?) we're still badly in need of four players and we all know where, and we all know what type, but we're not going to get them so it will be the usual trolley dash for bargains alright, not the top top class we were promised, but the type that were intended to be signed all along.

I find it absolutely astounding that the DM position, or the fact that our midfield is generally too lightweight has never really been properly addressed in all the time since Paddy left. What other top club would have taken this long ( and counting ) to find a solution ? Still, I hear Flamini is back training with us, and still only 29. Could be a shrewd move ?

The 'core' concept is something Utd and Chelsea have never neglected. Wengers bias away from british players (he d deny it but i say hes only doing it now due to pressure and no alternatives) has proved to be one of the roots of the problems in the Clubs progress in my view and ive said it for years Kev. Saurez isnt joining Arsenal now in my view. The win v Man C is totally meaningless. In a big match with them, who would you put your cash on? Wenger needs to walk. 7 Million quid p.a to create that sqaud isnt near good enough.

Wow, we beat Man City in a friendly, but Wenger and his followers seem to forget that we lost the Emirates Cup to Galatasaray. Just shows that these pre-season friendlies are useless. Like others have mentioned, an excellent article from Swiss Ramble shows that the club have plenty to spend. Where are those Wenger ass lickers saying Wenger has nothing to spend, being restricted money or any other pitiful excuses? I like to see what other excuses they pull out of their asses.

Actually, I completely agree with what Arseblog and Swiss Ramble have had to say about our transfer activity this summer, and have said as much above. What I have not done is make it the main focus of the piece, as in fairness, it's a fairly well-worn topic I think we can all agree on.

That performance was a replica of the away game @ arabcity last season , where we had more possession and were less clinical , and lost diaby who had been superb . I honestly believe that this squad is 2 or 3 players away from a prem title challenge

Totally understand those who believe saturdays win might make Wenger think he doesn't need to buy. Personally I doubt thats the case and theres something else that needs considering here. Who's to say if we'd have lost heavily Suarez may have reconsidered his decision to actively look at leaving Liverpool for us. As it is a pretty decent win and performance might make him want to dig his heels in even more in a bid to join us? Just a thought...

The excellent Swiss Ramble more than any article you could read anywhere about our club gives all the reasons why fans like myself are so frustrated with OGL & board.Had this been the Arsenal of 2004 you could argue most of the money COULD stay in the bank we had quality & depth. It isn't just the fans that need a boost & I suggest the players comments back that up also. This man made the comment a few years back 'if I was given £100m to spend I would give it back'well near enough that's what he has now & guess what he isn't spending it.A owners wet dream especially when living in Denver.....A match made in heaven OGL & the DDT(@fozzy's mate) yes we really are spoilt as Arsenal fans one man's failed sporting project meet's one man's sporting cash builder god help us!

  41. Fozzy's mate

    Aug 12, 2013, 10:14 #37338

Kev all the city result does is give OGL what he wants, a reason to spend nil and keep his get out of jail free card in his back pocket. Swiss Rambles analysis shows that we are by far the most cash rich club in europe. For the last 5 years OGL has been in full self protection mode. Set your targets low. Go on holiday to clacton if that's what you can afford but you don't see too many millionaires choosing that destination do you. Especially if the trave agents were charging a higher price than to go to barbados. The "Sanogo is a great player press conference" confirmed all our views. A great manager in a biegone era.

For me this was typical Arsenal - play well when there's no pressure on as opposed to the usual bottling when any important games come around. And as each transfer window passes I find it harder and harder to believe that Wenger is the same man that delivered two doubles and the Invincibles season. Football has moved on and it has left Wenger and our Board of Directors behind . . . . . . .

    Aug 12, 2013, 9:30 #37334

The senile one has managed to mis-manage another summer with no planning or thought. He just never learns from his mistakes both on and off the pitch. Utterly hopeless. In total 27 players have left the Club. That tells you two things. Firstly our recruitment is hopeless int eh first place for that many players not to be good enough. Secondly we need players! The managers answer? Bring in a 27 year old on trial!!! You couldn't make it up. How there's not an open revolt to remove this clown I will never know. He is scared to spend money in case it puts his huge contract on the line. Winning nothing and coming fourth is fine when your making your boss a fortune. Spend 70M and then win nothing and your relation with him alters as he starts to ask a coup,e more questions and actually challenges you.

Kevin your putting a brave face on the fact we are kicking off in 7 days with a weaker squad than when we scraped in to 4th a few months ago and the same manager and players that lost to lower leauge sides in the cups. Our dealing this Summer have come as no suprise as 5 years ago Keith Edleman said the same as gazidis that we have money to spend and guess what... It's the same outcome in a £5,000,000 PROFIT ... I could ramble on for hours about this but I suggest that you read Arseblog today which sums up my feeling and then take a look at the link on his page to Swiss Ramble as that really will piss you off when you see how much money we have to spend on players!!!
