So we will be doing a bit of self-promotion this season as we strive to keep sales healthy and ensure The Gooner fanzine continues in difficult times for print media. Maybe we should have done a sticker album for 2013/14!
First up a reminder that everything in the print version of The Gooner is exclusive and critically not available to read elsewhere. The articles and columns do not appear on this website. So you are buying something that features unique content which you will not get anywhere else.
As for the issue itself, there is no ignoring the breaking of the club’s transfer record on 2nd September and there is a piece on what we can expect from Mesut Ozil. Originally, we intended to have a fantastic artwork by Paine Proffitt on the front cover to commemorate 100 Years of Arsenal in Islington. However, Ozil took precedence, so this is now inside as the opening page of a feature in which Gooner contributors write of their personal memories of Islington in relation to their supporting the Gunners.
The Highbury Spy column returns after taking a month off in the first issue of the season, whilst our new regular series on Arsenal Programmes Through the Years reaches 1971-72. Jon Spurling writes about the summer transfer window as a whole and Tim Stillman relays us his trip report as one of the 48 UK based fans that travelled to Fenerbahce.
There are features on Aaron Ramsey and Olivier Giroud, whilst our regular piece on the 32 players featured on the core of the stadium reaches David Seaman. We take a look at the Fantasy League points tallies of Arsenal players last season to identify strengths and weaknesses in the team and the Dwight Hart-Lane cartoon strip returns to reflect on the recent North London Derby.
An article asks about whether the club are lacking something by the players not wearing matchday suits, whilst this month’s In the Away End feature surprisingly visits the forums of Spurs fans around the time of 1st September. I wonder why? Fozzy watched a match for the first ever time from club level when Tottenham visited and relays the tale. And there is an account of Transfer Deadline Day from the couch of Peter Le Beau.
There are also regulars such as Talking Reds, Arsenal Day by Day, North Bank Times, Inbox, Mickey Cannon, Anger Management and the 91st Minute. Not bad for £2.50. Sellers will be stationed around the stadium on Sunday and the home matches against Napoli, Norwich and Borussia Dortmund and legendary seller Alex will be selling outside the away games as well.
So please support us and buy a copy when you visit the stadium. If you can’t get along, at some point soon, issue 237 will be available to purchase online here. This link will be updated when it is actually available.
