Making the most of it

Gnabry: Have a go hero

There have been a number of times in recent seasons when Arsenal have failed to capitalize on teams they are competing with dropping points. Seizing the moment is not something they have really done since the days when they did actually compete in the league right until the very end of the campaign.

However, yesterday was a welcome change as the Gunners took advantage of all the teams in the title mix dropping points, including shock defeats for the two Manchester clubs. Their odds of winning the title have sailed in to 9/2, and you can now get longer odds on holders Manchester United.

The first half of the game against Swansea proved a damp squib. Initially Michael Laudrup’s team pressed high up the field, and the visitors failed to establish a great deal of rhythm. Mesut Ozil was caught in possession more than once and neither side registered an attempt on target. Things could only get better.

Fortunately, after the interval, they did. Serge Gnabry was a bit of a surprise start after looking so shattered in the latter stages of the League Cup game against West Brom. However, as against Stoke, he was frequently involved, seeking the ball and playing a full part in Arsenal’s possession game. Additionally, he drove at the Swansea defence in a way that his senior colleagues rarely did. It’s something Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain used to do, and Jack Wilshere occasionally does. Eventually, this sense of natural initiative gets coached out of them at London Colney, but it served Arsenal well in Wales.

The second half presented a greater amount of space to work in for both teams, and Arsenal were more clinical. Ozil remained peripheral, a reminder that it will take time for the player to fully integrate and adapt to the different style of the Premier League. Next time he gets the kind of gilt-edged chance he enjoyed in the second half, one imagines he will convert it. In fairness, there are many imported Arsenal legends that also took their time to get up to speed in England, so fans can afford to be patient. The player himself looked very disappointed with his own display when he was substituted, but he needs to remember the bigger picture. The team are winning matches, and psychologically, his arrival has created the belief that the club are title contenders once again.

Momentum of course, is key, but a caveat needs to be made for the purposes of perspective. Arsenal have gained 15 points from their six Premier League fixtures this season. In the equivalent matches in 2012-13, they gained 18 points. And still finished 16 points off first place. So, although it is very pleasing to be clear at the top of the league, it’s early days. What Arsenal must do is to continue beating the teams they should, which has happened in the Premier League so far this season with the exception of the first fixture. Winning on the road is certainly an excellent habit to have established, and the record sequence continues. The bench looked a little stronger today, at least in terms of defensive options, which helped when the substitutions were made. It is still a bit surreal to see Nicklas Bendtner back in the frame, and he might make a very unlikely hero at some point down the line.

For now, though, it’s more of the same please, with fingers crossed that key form players do not get injured – the two centre-backs, Giroud, Ramsey and Flamini (who has become integral to the team’s organization and focus). Napoli will be a real test on Tuesday evening with the following weekend’s visit to West Brom totally unpredictable. But Arsenal have established a winning habit in recent weeks. Defeats are bad, but draws are almost as expensive. Teams can afford to lose a number of matches, such as Manchester United have done a couple of times in recent campaigns, but remain top of the table as long as they do not draw too many. The one hope is that, if Arsenal do manage to maintain a healthy position through the next three months, they use the cash in the bank to improve their chances of success in January. That would be another example of exploiting an opportunity, as the team did by picking up the three points at the Liberty Stadium yesterday evening.

On the yellow and blue kit - this is going to sound a bit tragic, but that's because it's a sad indictment of modern football. The only thing that the kit makers will take notice of when they design our next away kit is sales in comparison to other colours. They don't really care about our traditions. (In fact I doubt Nike are even aware of them.)If they see a favourable trend in sales, they'll go for a certain colour. Therefore, if in doubt, always buy the yellow. Be it a replica from 71 or today's excellent version of a classic. Stuck for a Christmas present idea for your niece who has shown no interest whatsoever in football? Simple, she'll love the new away kit.

Yes guys .love that kit. Always makes me think of the class of '71'. Guts, skill, forward power, an 'all for one and one for all mentality'(and we needed no french fainthearts about the place then), a proper top keeper whos motto was 'they ll score over my dead body' - the type who forwards respected, unlike this clown we re lumbered with now. They had muscle and wouldn't hesitate to use it so to win.All through the team was strength and there was poise too in all the right places. I often used to wonder what Pat Rice used to truly think as he watched us bottling and wilting through the last 7-8 years to anybody who had the temerity to say boo to us. Must have cringed privately.

@ Alsace - too right about the yellow and blue kit. It's THE away kit colours. It's a winners kit. No doubt about it. It inspires pride. I love that picture of Serge and Jack above because of the kit. It means we mean business again. It's Martin Keown leaping above Ruud van sh** himself. Robert Pires curling one in at Anfield. If you squint it could be grainy images from Turin in 1980. Rocky pumping his fist at Anfield '89. Steve Walford and Alan Alan Sunderland swearing his head off at Wembley in 1979. Charlie George, who can hit 'em. Bloody marvellous.

I must confess to being of the "Ron-ian" point of view, but we have played and beaten Totteringham Hotspurs this season which no one else has managed. I think that we were fortunate to have played them early, but they will be a force this year and we have 3 points. On a strictly optimistical view, we have a two point lead. All that we need to do is to win our 32 remaining league fixtures and...... More seriously, I think that our lack of depth will catch up with us, but the overall standard has been dropping for years while OGL fiddled. The threat is Mourinho, who on any conceivable basis, knows what he is doing. Rocky, in apportioning credit for our current run, I feel the return to a yellow and blue strip bears some of it. Looks good and feels good. Frank Stapleton and Brian Talbot, Paul Vaessen in Turin, Mickey at Anfield. Marvellous.

Bould s peripheral and always has been. A bit of a 'yes man' if you ask me who keeps his counsel in the hope he might get the big chair one day, heaven forbid. . The defence there still looks rickety and top sides will open it. The Keeper is very ordinary. Since that Munchen game last year, we've had a favourable run of fixtures and towards last Seasons end played teams who weren't at it. This Season we re still to play anybody of note. You're all kidding yourselves if you think that defence has improved. Its just the same. The team is running on a bit of luck here and there plus goals from middle men. Results we ve got are welcome but they mask the reality of the performances. Like i've said, November through to Xmas will tell a story. Don't let your thirst for success cloud your judgement guys as a lot of you are doing just that.

@Alsace - apologies accepted. You make some very good points. We've been crying out for a proper defensive midfielder for years. Although possibly not the type you mean, but missing out on Xabi Alonso is a big regret. He would have dove-tailed very well with Cesc. (I always thought Grimandi was vastly underrated at filling in in front of the back four and doing the unglamorous stuff.) When you take the field away at some hostile away ground you need a monster or terrier in there to make sure you aren't pushed about or bullied by the likes of a Sam Alladyce side. We used to have a big side, with technically gifted players who could also impose themselves. (Vieira, Campbell, etc.) That all changed when he dismantled the invincibles. Do you know for certain that Wenger didn't want Flamini? I do also think people under-estimate Mertesacker's growing importance. I know he is slow and ponderous (which, when he makes the odd mistake always makes things look worse) but his positional sense and reading of the game is superb, the number of crosses he stops coming into the box is quite outstanding. His partnership with Koscielny is growing all the time. You may dismiss the perceived attitude and change in the balance of the side which people trace back to last March and a team meeting after the Spurs game, but I really hope there's something more meaningful in it.

Dear Rocky RIP and Chris. I'll try and answer your question. In the first place (1997)we had the famous back 5 and Dennis and David Platt and Wrighty. We needed Petit and Vieira to be brought in to make it all work. Wenger did that, which means that he DID know the importance of defensive midfielders. He maintained that position (with Gilberto) until 2006-7 having not replaced EP and PV (as from May 2005) and then let Flamini go. He also dispensed with MK's services. He had the defence given to him, and when Keown retired as a player it started to go downhill, and it still isn't right. We win something if we play well and solidly for the WHOLE of a season, not just the back end when we are desperate to get into 4th spot. So I don't buy it that somehow we are on a run which you can count from a notional pivotal point last season. I therfore attribute our mini revival and good results this season to the team being given some coherence by Flanimal. The rest of the team can play because someone is looking after the organisation, telling them all what to do on the pitch and snuffing out the other teams attacks, or directing others to do so. We have Ozil as well, which is fantastic because other teams are scared of him and are correct to be. Wenger didn't want Flamini, it was forced upon him by circumstances. If it had been otherwise he would have bitten Flamini's hand off as soon as HE asked to come and train. Where I am conjecturing is about Ozil and his arrival despite the manager. So, there, as briefly as I can be, is why I do not attribute our probably temporary change in fortune to Arsene "Inertia" Wenger. I would like what has happened to be built on. I would like a second DM as back up and have suggested how that could be achieved before January. The Great Steve Bould may well be having an influence but I want the architect of the defence which took us to Paris in 2006, Martin Keown to be coaching them. I also want one and possibly two more excellent central defenders. I apologise to both of you if I have responded to you as if you were mindless devotees of OGL. I was clearly wrong. Let's see how we do against Napoli tomorrow night. We can all agree that we approach it with more confidence than we have done in years.

@Alsace - by the way, you said 'Praise him for the stuff he gets right, but criticise the stuff that is wrong. If you really love Wenger, you will do that. I just love Arsenal, not Arsene'. - I loved Arsenal long before I'd even heard of Arsene Wenger. I'll continue to do so long after he has gone and until my dying day (hoping they arrive in that order.)He is an employee of the club we love, as they all are. Anyone of them that facilitates success and gives joy to us Gooners deserves our love and all the credit in the world.

@Alsace - I agree with most of what you say as you speak perfect sense. However, I fail to see how my point of view has been 'destroyed'. Which point of view? As I keep saying, I'm neither an AKB or WOB. I can see the man has flaws. Infuriating ones. I just call for people who are quick to criticise when things go wrong, to also give credit where it's due. Balance. Perspective. I get as frustrated as anyone when we throw away leads through defensive indiscipline/goal keeping catastrophies/poor work ethic. My in-built reaction to going to 2-1 on Saturday was blind panic. It would be so typical for us to blow it. I couldn't watch. This isn't the action of somewhere with blind faith. However, I can recognise that the balance in the team has changed for the better and we have grounds for optimism. Is this Stevie Bould's influence finally paying off? I do hope so. His other blind spot is the goal keeper and by all accounts he isn't keen on being told what to do here either. That said, if I feel one of our most successful managers ever warrants defending from the endless critics, I'll do it. By the way, you still haven't answered the question in relation to your comment '.. I am absolutely ecstatic that we are doing so well, but I have no doubt of the reason for it and it isn't OGL'. So who is it? You can't only give credit to 'Arsenal' when it goes well, but it's all Wenger's fault when it goes wrong. That's as imbalanced as your selection of the Patrick Vieira example (which I take your point on.) However, would we have even had Patrick Vieira at Arsenal in the first place but for Wenger? (Rhetorical question.) Or was that nothing to do with OGL either?

    Sep 30, 2013, 16:14 #39955

Dear Rocky RIP and Chris. I expected to spend this season sitting in the North Bank having a miserable time but venting my spleen at Wenger. Whilst I shall of course have ample opportunity to do that for the myriad of intra game screw ups he will make with substitutions, I shall at least for the time being be enjoying the football instead. As I think I have said above there are some things that Wenger can get right- why else would he have been able to win things? My objection to him is that (as I have also said above) if there is a significant problem with the squad, he doesn't get help or pretends that it doesn't matter. By way of a concrete example ( because when we state a case we have to prove things),we haven't actually had a dedicated ( i.e. trained fo the role), Defensive Midfielder since Flamini left. When Wenger sold Song, who was the closest thing we had to one after Flamini left, he made some assinine statement about the game not needing DM's any more. Not even the AKB's ( whilst in their right mind) will be prepared to put forward the theory that you can play professional soccer without a destroying / ballwinning midfielder and a title winning squad needs at least TWO. ( Michael Thomas / Kevin Richardson - Vieira / Petit - Vieira / Gilberto ). The Defence (as in the back 4 and goalkeeper) has not been a solid or effective entity for many years. Keown got it working in 2006, so what does he do - fail to employ Keown. Put simply, there are significant lacuna or gaping holes in Wenger's knowledge and approach. Most people in a position of responsibility employ someone to do the bits that they don't know about or don't understand. Not Wenger. He isn't competent and he isn't safe, and if you want to go on enjoying a winning team, then we need to get rid of him. I used to think that he could be prevailed on to accept help, but he just won't. Apart from the examples I have given, 8 years without a trophy supports my point of view and destroy yours. I really really hope that Flamini stays fit and we go on and win something this season, but wanting that can't blind me to the essential problem, which is that when something is not being run on sound lines, a competition will lead other teams to find the holes and rip them open. Football is war by other means and in war, given broadly equivalent resources, the smartest most competent general always wins. Could he do it properly again? Maybe, but someone has to be there to keep him in line and kick him up the bottom when he needs it. Telling him he's wonderful and can do no wrong, which is what you boys are always doing, simply doesn't help. Praise him for the stuff he gets right, but criticise the stuff that is wrong. If you really love Wenger, you will do that. I just love Arsenal, not Arsene.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but in the wake of the defeat at Tottenham in March didn't the players call a meeting to try and sort out the pathetic way we were defending year after year? There have been a lot of problems with the way Arsenal have played over the past eight years and a lot of them can be laid fairly and squarely at Wenger's door. Mitigating factors have been the need to balance the books every season, hence the sales of RVP, Cesc, Nasri etc. while creating a world-class stadium and keeping us in the CL, but it seems to me there has been a change of philosophy at the club whereby 75% possession of the ball during a match is no longer the over-riding game plan. Personally I think the meeting last March and Steve Bould's influence in making our defending more of a priority have been the catalyst for what looks like title-winning form over the past six months.

Of course Wengers not a genius again and there really isn't any excuse for the eight years of underachieving and on many occasions appalling performances/results suffered over that same period. Can we also forget this daft notion that the 'AKBs' have been in any way shape or form been 'proven right'. The only thing they did was totally ignore what was plainly obvious to most that the money excuse was just that-an excuse-and that quite simply Wengers 'managing' just wasn't as good as it once was. And even if after all that you still believe money was the main reason for our failure the simple fact was he spent a lot of it on crap players and stupid wages. Rant over-now onto the positives. Fact is I think Wenger has changed over the past few months and very much for the good. We seem far more resiliant, far more organised, and at last he's recogniosed the obvious need for the addition of the odd truly world class player (even now I can't believe we spent £42.5m on one single player!). In all honesty I never saw this coming and whilst I was firmly in the 'Wenger out' camp I've firmly put that on hold until the end of the season where I hope any decision on his contract willbe made. For me the biggest positve to be had from all of this is that it's genuinely pulled the fanbase together for the first time in many a year. Yes there'll still be arguements but theres a real feeling we're all in this together again. My real hope now is that Wenger carries this on and doesn't just sit still as he's done before. We're still short of another truly world class striker and hopefully thats a priority in jan. If we get him I really can see us competing for the title again and if that happens Wenger will have earned a new contract rather than simply given one.

It's certainly enjoyable being top of the league, but it's far too soon to get carried away. We've been on too many runs like this before and then messed up when it really mattered. The results have been excellent but the displays just ok at times. Still, if you can win when not particularly playing at your best it's a bonus. The thing that worries me most is that a few more good results and Wenger will be given a new contract. That would be very depressing as I still can't see us winning things with him still in charge. Obviously I would love to be proved wrong!

  15. What was the point in leaving Highbury?

    Sep 30, 2013, 10:43 #39911

6 games in to a season after an easy fixture list and all of a sudden Wenger is a geniuses again!! 6 games doesn't make up for 8 years of mis-management. Let's hold off until the end of season and see what we have own before either side makes their case against Wenger. As for the signing of Ozil being a master stroke, leave it out. My 2 year old would have signed him when it became obvious Madrid needed to balance the books. It was wasn't a great signing, it fell it our lap thank god because up to then the summer had been another balls up and we are still playing with one CF at the club which is a joke. What is the point of offering him another contract now. Let's wait and see. Surely 9 years of nothing is too much even for the most rabib AKB.

'I have no doubt of the reason for it (our success)and it isn't OGL' - Sorry to sound sarcastic, I'm genuinely curious of the reason you have 'no doubt' of. Can you share please? Saying "Eventually, this sense of natural initiative gets coached out of them at London Colney" is an unwarranted snipe, Kevin. (A) how can you possibly know this? (B) Wenger gets criticised for not employing any sort of tactics, if that is the case surely he is reliant on players showing their 'natural initiative' to get us through a match? Can't have it both ways. Another win and 9 on the bounce in all comps - can't ask for more than that after the opening day defeat.

Shall we try some facts. A few seasons ago, Patrick Vieira, trying to get back to the club to anchor some stability in midfield was rudely rebuffed by OGL, who learns nothing and retains nothing. This time, when an ex player who actually knows what he is doing tried to return, Wenger had made one foray into the French Second Division in the whole of the transfer window, and was that desperate to show that he had done something constructive that he signed Flanimal despite the fact that he didn't wish to. It was his initial lack of respect to that player in 2006-7 that caused Flamini to leave in the first place. So, we could have had the return of a good solid midfield influence some years ago ( which by the way might have prevented Fabregas and RVP leaving), but OGL wanted to play with his theories of fairyland where everyone in the team is a number 9 and no one puts in an unfair tackle against us. From the second that Flamini came on in the Spurs game to the close of play yesterday, we have looked a different side. Our good players can play and the opposition know that if they hurt Jack, Ramsey or Ozil they will be on Matthew Flamini's list of enemies. But guess what, he is only one bloke and OGL has literally no idea how to replace him when and not if he gets suspended or carried off the field. I believe that the answer in the short term is Vermalen, but he has to be committed to that role and Flamini has to teach him. As for the AKB's and their drivel herein and above, I am absolutely ecstatic that we are doing so well, but I have no doubt of the reason for it and it isn't OGL. There are some bits of the jigsaw that he does well, but the stuff he doesn't know he pretends isn't important. I cannot wait for Tuesday or for Wenger to be kicked out. We could have competed like this in every one of the last 8 seasons in each of which the opposition has got weaker. The reason we didn't was becauase OGL wouldn't. I want him out for a REASON, and that reason is incompetence.

And to all those AKBs who think we've won the league already, Kevin is usually spot on with his analysis. I agree our excitement should be tempered with realism. When did we last win the league? Or any trophy for that matter? Let's wait till November before we trot out lines like "Arsene knows" and "us discerning Gooners..." 8 years of failure wiped away in 6 games is not discerning. I'd say that's a little bit idolisation. Arsene may find his way back to winning, real winning, not 4th. But we critics have no more time for "4th is a trophy" or "spirit". Put your money where your mouth is!

Ramsey is a new man this season. Worrisome on Giroud's miss. Ozil should have scored too. We almost let them back in. Jack was like a lion. He needs more protection though. Flamini can be that guy! Gnabry worked harder than Theo ever does. His effort was amazing. He needs to continue his probing runs forward. The build up to Ramsey's goal was beautiful. Much better than the tippy tippy of the past few seasons. We still a need a Suarez type striker who can run at defenses though. Can't believe I'm saying it, but that might be all we need when eveyone's fit again! Really want to see Cazorla and Ozil together! They could tear thru defenses if clicking! Still top of the league and the Mancs both lost! Gotta love that.

Jon, I thought the post was spot on, and you must have special senses, and what makes you think the Editor has anything to admit to being wrong about? Obviously your one of these supporters who have conveniently forgotten the last eight years of failure and all that went with it, and would like to see it air brushed out of history because of one signing, and more of an Arsene fan than an Arsenal one.

Kevin, What is the basis of the comment on "the sense of initiative being coached out"? Wenger has some flaws, but surely not this one! This team has been consistently winning over the past 7-8 months and you still find a way to criticize the coaching. Pretty poor really.

Yes the results went our way yesterday with the chavs and the spuds drawing and we took full advantage for a change with another result and another goal from our number one striker and it was great to see Gnabry getting on the score sheet for his first goal for us, he clearly didn't let the penalty miss in the CO cup affect him showing great enthusiasm with another good display and hopefully it continues providing he's allowed, Giroud was once again off the pace, i wish he'd keep his tongue in his mouth every time he misses, i'm getting tired of seeing it. Jack didn't take his usual kicking although he dished it out a few times with Swansea showing us how to play tippy tappy on more than one occasion, although we showed them how it was done with our second goal. There was a couple of good saves from Chezz but i can't help thinking and i would be willing to put money on it there is one or two major cock ups in there and lets hope they don't cost us. But another win and three points thanks mainly to our number one striker and with results going our way a good weekend. But it's early days yet a long way to go before we can start getting excited and if the last eight seasons is anything to go by there's a lot of fans who won't.

I actually thought it was our best game so far. We were a little off the pace in the first half but showed a lot of quality in the second. Swansea didn't really get much of sniff until the goal. My continuing concern is up front. Giroud should have buried the chance he had and didn't even hit the target. Against better teams that will be our only chance. Tricky week coming up and West Brom won't be a push over after beating Man U. If we win both games I really will believe we're in with a shout. Discussion of Wenger's position is irrelevant. If we do well I'm sure he will stay if we don't then he'll go and that what should happen.

Can we not enjoy the success without gloating from the Arsene worshipers? Anyone with an ounce of objectivity can see that he has changed his approach during 2013, and defense is being given as much priority as the attacking side of the game. The defense is far better organised than for many years. So while I congratulate him for what is shaping up to be a very good season, why did it take him so many years to realize that concentrating only on possession and attack would win SFA?

    Sep 29, 2013, 15:49 #39863

@Ozil - people who dismiss the run we are on need to look at the run in its overall context, which involves taking it back to early last March after we lost to Sp*rs away. It's effectively the same team we have, so it's fair to do this. In the PL, a run of 16 matches with 13 wins punctuated by draws against Man U and Everton, and a rather odd defeat to Villa. Throw into that 12 straight away wins in all competitions. There's a consistency there and grounds for optimism, surely?

The WOB's have all gone very quiet lately. I haven't witnessed one of their little chubby, angry, red faces since the Villa home game. Maybe they're starting to realise that moronic card and banner displays are better left to the school girls and start to listen to us more discerning Gooners who can far better read where Arsenal are heading than a load of old wobble bottoms with brains the size of small water biscuits. If after our next defeat, and it will happen, these dullards start stinking the place out again with their incessant belly aching, give them a kindly slap and remind them that if it was down to them Ramsey, Wenger, Giroud, Mertesacker, Szczesny to name a few would all be gone. And we'd be fighting for fourth again with David Moyes at the helm.

D_G "equivalent fixtures" is just a trick, not analysis, to a little dig. What counts for us, as you said, and it's good and optimistic is that we better our last season result after six matches whereas all our rivals below as in the table. I don't accept the blah blah statements about the fact that we played weak teams; Spurs is strong team and definitely stronger than Manu and Chelsea when we played them, and so is Swansea. Aston villa beat Mancity yesterday and WBA beat united so I don't see why Arsenal can't beat them. Those who enjoy criticising Arsenal should at least wait for happiness until November.

@clockend Jim - very true. His tracking back seems much better than Theo's so far. Which is partly what I love about it all. Theo raised his game when his contract was up for renewal and he wanted assurances/a pay rise. I'd love Serge to take his place and for Theo to become an angry super sub, bursting to get on and prove Wenger wrong for dropping him. Competition for places soon shakes up any complacency.

I don't agree that no-one else drives at defences. Jack Wilshere got two free kicks that led to goals against Stoke precisely by driving at the defence. And Ramsey seems to do it routinely. That said, Gnabry is a great prospect.

The games through Dec and the New Year are the acid test and before that the trip to Man Utd in mid November looms. Until then maybe your own views and crowing on whos 'wrong' are best shelved for a while, don't you think? A good few of us aren't getting carried away on the false promise of a 6 game start v average opponents just yet. My initial reaction to signing Flamini (which I posted several times on here) was: a very sensible signing. It was disappointing to lose him when and how we did, so he's very welcome back in a footballing sense. He's been fantastic at doing the unglamorous stuff and instrumental in how cohesive we've been defensively this season. As was pointed out by somebody else on here (sorry, I've forgotten who) we don't seem to be carrying the passengers of old. The work ethic seems very good. Everyone is pulling their weight. Including the 'bonus ball' of Serge Gnabry. (What joy! Who honestly saw his emergence coming?) I've said all along that there's a big opportunity for Arsenal this season, given the transitional nature of other clubs. I stand by that. Despite the negative spinners on here who it seems will never be satisfied until a trophy arrives, there's a lot to be positive about, we're on an exceptional run of form, but as ever, let's maintain a degree of perspective as the author points out. It's still September, but where else would people rather be right now? Keep this going please Arsenal!

Frank, you are so right about Flamini. He is tailor-made for that role, and performs with distinction. His personality is a vital and key ingredient. He is a leader as well, vocal, animated, passionate with incredible drive, this sets him apart. I do think in my assessment of the Flaminal that it goes some way towards exonerating Alex Song. He was not tailor-made for that position, simples! I believe he wanted so desperately to play football he often overlooked his positional responsibilities. He would have performed well I think alongside Mathieu if we operated a two man cover system. Flamini shouldering the lion's share of the defensive duties, allowing Song to express himself a little.

A good three points and the second consecutive game we have won against opponents that have had more possession, very unArsenal like but very welcome nevertheless. The Ozil signing got all the publicity but to me the signing of Flamini was more important. The DM position has been a position we have been weak in since the man himself left in 2008.When he played there in 2007/08 he allowed Cesc to have his best season.Flamini is not bothered about getting forward like that headless chicken Song who was found stuck upfield in the oppositions box.Flamini knows his position and has the discipline to stay there. It has given Ramsey the freedom to go forward.Buy Suarez in january and we will win the league..........but will we buy him?

Best performance of the season that, I actually felt we were quite good in the first half yesterday too. we were solid kept our shape, and laid the foundation to improve going forward early in the second half. Since Munich (and to be fair briefly at the start of last season also)our performances without the ball have been fantastic, and the influence of Bould is surely clear to see as well as the key improved perfomances of players , not only Ramsey, gibbs has come on leaps and bounds too. I know Wenger didn't like the lauding Bould got at the start of last season, but it's been happening again much more quietly this time since March. Although a I'm a wenger critic over the past few years, I praise him wholeheartedly for obviously showing the ability to delegate a side of the game that he is not so comfortable with to someone else. This team has spirit in spades, hopefully we cam keep it up, at the very least if it is to be Wenger's last season he can go out on a high

A great win because Ozil had a quiet game so much for us relying on him.The outstanding performers in the last 5 games have been Rambo and the grossly under-rated Flaminator. At last we have a DM who does just that protects the back 4 and lets the flair players do their job.But i have getting worried about Giroud he could hardly run in the last half an hour he is dead on his feet. The folly of Wenger going into the season with just one striker is coming back to haunt us.I am not getting carried away because we all know Wengers teams find a way to self destruct 1999,2003 and 2008 when we threw titles away. Finally a word of praise for Szczesny he was poor last season but this season he has been excellent but i would prefer Viviano on the bench. Finally JR read this slowly in the same games LAST season at home to Villa Spurs Stoke and away to Fulham Sunderland and Swansea we picked up 18 POINTS is that clear enough for you

As an observation on these posts of Serge playing instead of the injured Theo, I offer this, my view. From day one I watched Theo in disbelief. He was not a footballer! In a lower standard perhaps he was successful, at top level he is lost. He has never remotely achieved anything since, to convince me otherwise. He wears the shirt, he is my player- and gets my support. I regard him in the same way the kickers in American football are regarded, who come off the bench to kick a goal, or start a game, with no finesse or skill quotient, just a big boot. Theo's ability is speed, but often against fresh legs it isn't enough, unless a player is caught unawares. I see him as a late substitute, running at a tiring full back, and putting the other sides defence on rear guard action, no more. Serge, at whatever level he ultimately attains is a footballer. So even though a raw recruit at the moment, he is an improvement.

Think the point about Serge is that 18 year olds tend to have a quick recover time and it has to be said he's looking better every game. Manage his game time, as Wenger is doing and he'll be fine. Walcott, Ox, Arteta, Rosicky, Podolski and Cazorla still to return...what an amazing thought

Can Rambo walk on water ? Do we miss Wally ( a luxury player ) ? Perhaps we should all be thanking fools like @ Jude Jollyfella for the obsessive criticism of Rambo that has made him the player he is today. Another MoM performance, I am really pleased I put Rambo in my Dream Team at the start of the season as I have been top of the league for a while now at work. We are now looking like a championship winning team, defending and attacking as a team, although as you have stated Kevin, we are only one injury to a key player from being average. I shall reserve judgement until we have completed the November & December fixtures and played a top team. Strange to see Jack on the left, although it seemed to work. The team is certainly better organised now with Flamini taking control, similar job that Sol, Pat and Tony did . I am also pleased that he is constantly in the refs ear, something we have been short for a number of years ( Manure & Chelski are experts ) Serge was a bonus and more competition for Wally. JR - As per my previous post, it's the six matches against the same opposition at the same venue which Kevin means - Villa at home (23rd Feb), Fulham away (20th April), Spurs at home (17th November), Sunderland away (9th Feb), Stoke at home (2nd Feb) and Swansea away (16th March). All six games were won, thus 18pts. People are so keen for someone to be wrong that they don't really think about what has been said.

In the equivalent matches in 2012-13, they gained 18 points." Not sure how you did the math. Arsenal's point total after the first six matches in 2012-13 was 9. If you meant the first six matches against the same opponents as this year (i.e. Aston Villa, Fulham, Sunderland, Stoke, Spuds & Swansea), the total was 7. In either case the total is a far cry from the 18 you stated.

D_G - "equivalent matches" means the games against the same opposition home or away, so Kevin's right. However, it's probably also worth looking how our title rivals have done compared to their equivalent games last season. In Man United's case, nowhere near as well. If we can win our next three (very winnable) matches before Liverpool's visit in early November, I'll start to think the improbable is possible.

Quote by Patrick Collins in Mail on Sunday. "Arsene Wenger has been making a few disturbing noises. Nothing definite, just the odd hint that the clock is ticking on his career in England, that he may be entering the last lap. Now, he may be in coquettish mood, he may have been genuinely hurt by those impudent dimwits who waved placards at the Emirates last month, or he may finally be feeling the strain of his endlessly demanding job. Whatever the reason, he must put it behind him. For, nobody has brought such qualities of intellect, perception and principle to the sport. Nobody has come closer to transforming a simple game into a thing of beauty. Arsene Wenger never saw football as a 'brand', instead, he recognised its potential for making something akin to magic. As such, he is irreplaceable".
