Arsenal Rediscover Finishing Touch

Online Ed: Vital win at Bournemouth

Arsenal Rediscover Finishing Touch

If ever there was a ‘must win’ match in Arsenal’s Premier League campaign, yesterday at Dean Court was it. Having taken just three points from their previous four fixtures, the Gunners title tilt was looking distinctly wobbly, having dropped from first to fourth as a consequence of their failure to win a league match since January 2nd.

There is surely a doubt over Francis Coquelin’s fitness, given the Flamini / Ramsey axis began the game. It has not proved an unqualified success by any means, although at least the partnership that played most of the previous three matches only saw the concession of one goal. However, the Gunners had also failed to score themselves in those games. The decision to start Flamini came close to being regretted early on, when he committed a two-footed lunge but was only cautioned. Other significant team news saw Gabriel maintain his place in the starting eleven ahead of Per Mertesacker, and The Ox start instead of Joel Campbell.

Bournemouth had one time Arsenal prospect Benik Afobe up front, scorer of three goals in his first four matches for his new team. One feared the immutable law of the ex, on that form. As it was the early danger came from Alexis as Arsenal managed to cut through the Cherries’ backline.

However, it was Ozil who opened the scoring, with a right-footed volley after a Giroud knockdown. A sweet strike that was followed within two minutes by that rarity of joys, an Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain goal, the Ox benefitting from an Aaron Ramsey pass, shooting across the keeper and seeing the ball go in off the upright. Ramsey was ultimately named man of the match, and for the first goal, it was his cross-field ball to Giroud which led the Ozil’s opener.

At the other end, the home side had their moments. Cech made a great tip over save from Arter and before the interval Bellerin bailed out Gabriel by using his pace to make a last ditch tackle on Pugh. Only Spurs have conceded fewer goals than Arsenal this season and one suspects that the Gunners might have to finish the campaign conceding less than anyone to win the title. There were a handful of lapses in concentration yesterday, but they got away with them. In spite of the stats, I have the feeling that Arsene Wenger’s team need to tighten up to gain the necessary results they will need. It remains to be seen whether Gabriel continues to keep Mertesacker out (with Jamie Vardy in opposition next weekend, I would imagine so). All Arsenal’s centre backs can induce moments of panic in different ways, fortunately they have Cech behind them. And that, ultimately, is probably the main reason the team have not been punished as much as they could have been.

In the second half, he made a good double save to retain the two goal margin. Arsene Wenger decided that security at the back was more important than exploiting Bournemouth on the break, replacing Oxlade-Chamberlain with Coquelin, evidently fit enough for a 23 minute run out. Later, Gibbs for Alexis was further re-enforcement of the position. At the end it was a case of mission accomplished.

Arsenal moved to third place, with Leicester five points ahead of them. Who, even a few weeks ago, would have thought that the visit of the Foxes, a category C game, next Sunday, will be critical to the Gunners’ title chances? If it not for the fact they have yet to visit White Hart Lane and the Etihad, Arsenal might be able to get away with a draw, however, the title is now a four horse race, and Wenger’s team now need to win all their home matches, especially one against a direct title opponent. Fortunately Manchester City are playing Tottenham later in the day, so one of the two will drop points. It’s an opportunity Arsenal cannot afford to pass up, a moment of truth. They really need to win.

As for the game against Bournemouth, it was absolutely vital to get back to winning ways. Not their most fluent performance, but effective enough. Job done, move on. The decision not to give Flamini a red card was probably critical. The consensus from neutrals is that he should have been dismissed. Will it be a case of on such moments do seasons turn?

Goodness me, what a bunch of bitter negative supporters we have become! How about getting behind the team no matter what and creating bit of noise at the stadium for starters? Only if the fans do their bit, can we then start hammering the team. Anyone would have thought we had lost at the weekend the way everyone is carrying on. On the field we actually have a pretty decent defensive record of late, but it's going forward where we lack a bit of rhythm and I would say the injuries to Santi, Le Coq and Alexis have contributed massively. End of the day. we are still in with a shout but we have to get Coquelin into the starting eleven at the weekend and hope Alexis and Giroud find some form ASAP. Without that, we do lack a bit of craft endlessly passing the ball from side to side but I reckon that tactically we are better set up to counter attack away from home, so those away games are not as fear inducing as they would be at home in my view where the football is more stale as are the fans' efforts to get behind the team!

mbg; the quality of debate about Flamini's red carder is very odd. A two footed tackle is a red card no qualifications. Im pleased he got away with it but talk about kettles and pots. The AKBs would have been organising a petition if it had been Shawcross on one of ours. Westie would have been posting about bent refs. you couldnt make it up

Hiccup, indeed, strange (well not really) how everything's quiet on that front, if it had happened to one of our players we'd have never heard the fooking end of it from the usual AKB's on here let alone TOF, but no not a peep. And not a peep against the ref either, I guess he's a good un. Not much discussion either on how it would have turned out if Flamini had been sent off knowing what we do about our nice boys speeritt and mental strength.

That photo of Ozil will become iconic. I bet Tony Adams now wishes after scoring his goal against Everton in front of the North Bank, instead of holding his arms out, he'd just stuck his thumb in his mouth. Ozil looks so f*cking cool.

“Far far away fan:” How dare you call into question Ramsey’s performance! Don’t you know by now? It’s never down to him. When he puts in a particularly abject performance (rather often unfortunately), we’re led to believe it’s his partner‘s fault -- in this case, Flamini -- because they don’t suit him. When he’s shunted to the wing (for good reason, and he should be grateful to be picked), we’re reminded that he’s being played out of position. When he repeatedly passes the ball into touch or gives it away needlessly, we’re told that he never hides and he runs his socks off -- or better yet -- we’re reminded that he had a horror injury 6 years ago. For some reason, his defenders flatly refuse to countenance the notion that he’s not good enough, and despite that brief purple patch a few seasons ago when he was decidedly brilliant, it's looking more and more like a one-off. The bottom line: he’s gotten his wish (by default) to play in the middle of the pitch, but he’s been exposed as ponderous, slow-footed, and slow-witted with the ball. As long as Wenger is in charge, though, he’s a nailed on starter. Get used to more woeful displays and subsequent excuses on his behalf, mate.

Do you remember Wrighty jumping on the ball with both feet when Schmeichel came running out to challenge. Nothing wrong with that one either but we all knew by the time we got home from Highbury that evening the media would have labelled Wrighty as Jack the Ripper. Lighten up those of you wallowing in your self pity & memories of glories past, it's still too early to write Wengers obituary. We're still alive & kicking, at least some of us are!

Nowt wrong with Flamini's challenge. If there had been owt wrong with it I'm sure serial ref blamer Westie would have told us by now. Somehow though, had it been a Bournemouth player going in two footed and getting away with it, I'm sure there'd be a petition already up and running against Clattenburg. With all the thumb sucking and Monreal's arch backed dive in the box with accompanying scream and pained look at the ref, it was good to see a bit of masculinity on the pitch from Flamini.

Not too many of Webster's disciples on here tonight - a bit surprising as I thought all is well again in La La Land. Personally, being hard to please these days, I thought the match pretty dire with Bournemouth looking like relegation fodder & lacking any real qualidee. I'm afraid there were too many WTF & FFS moments for me yet again. Still, the weekend's rugby was very good wasn't it? Come on Fast Eddie - whoops, silly me COYG!

couldnt care less if Ozil wants to suck his thumb in fact hope we see a lot more of it. still think something is missing from the team not seen us perform at our very best since that first half against Man utd. cant seem to eork out Ramsey at the moment he just does not seem like scoring another goal maybe having the more natural holding midfielder in Coq back in the team will allow him to venture upfield more often. Think we need to get the right balance in this team very soon or we are going to be set for the 3rd or 4th place trophy again

Our fixture next Sunday v Leicester isn't fair. They have an extra days's rest as they played last Saturday. Also we are still in the FACup where although we will play 10 or 11 squad players some of our first teamers will be on the bench while others will be putting the kettle on at home having to watch on tv. Finally against Barca Cech is liable to get back ache in fishing the ball out of the net. All this gives Leicester an unfair advantage.

There was a lot of talk about how dangerous the Flamini tackle was, except it was absolutely on the floor and he got all of the ball about 10 years before going anywhere near the player. Yes, he was daft to do it, but the punishment fit the crime. Otherwise a pretty hopeless performance and how in the name of all that is Holy did Ramsey win man of the match. He gives the ball away constantly. We never have control of midfield nowadays. Answer : put Flanimal AND Coquelin in the centre and GET control of the midfield. We look hopeless and clueless. I wonder idly whether the AKB's will " explain away" a Tottenham Hotspur Title win. How will OGL, not be at fault for that?

I wonder if Henry and Souey would like to stump up the salary that size for keeping an old warrior hanging about for what they bring 'off the pitch' and 'in the in the dressing room'. Henry s a bigger hypocrite than Badarse ever is as he drones and jabbers on about the Senior pros needing to show the youngsters the way via their leadership in a Club. Really Thierry? How come a few of those youngsters you skippered detested you then for harassing and balling them out for not giving you the ball all of the time? Heaven help the Arse when hes in place, sulking and blathering his way ahead as the next Coach. You might think G Nevs signed the failure book, I reckon TH will re write it.

Still trying to get over the new JW that is The Ox (sic) dancing in the tunnel before the Saints game. Together with the thumb sucker you have the recipe for 'an evolving team that will go on to win many trophies.' Even GoonerRon is having his doubts. Lets face it, his Coach behaves like a juvenile delinquent quite frequently so a few thumb suckers wont do any harm. I think if Wenger had the team turn out dressed in pampers, rumper suits and ribbons, you and a few others on here would support it as a progressive new kit initiative before you rushed off to the Club shop to buy it.

In praise of Gabriel. The Metro have highlighted these stats on Gabriel. He's started 8 PL games and Arsenal have only lost once, at the Bridge, when he was sent off in the first half. In the other 7 PL games, Arsenal have only conceded one goal, and that in a 2-1 v Everton. He surely must be given preference ahead of BFG for the remainder of the season. Hiccup will back me up when I say AFC have the fastest back 4 in the PL when BFG isn't playing. Dual forecast betting on the PL, to finish 1st & 2nd in either order: AFC/Leic 3/1; Leic/Citeh 4/1; Citeh/AFC 4/1; Leic/TH 11/2; AFC/TH 7/1; Citeh/TH 10/1; AFC/MU 33/1.

Deep down we know that right now the side does not look quite right. it is not flowing, it is getting by. When it comes to tougher matches (Liverpool Stoke Chelsea Southampton) you can all clearly see that we are not the best team in the EPL. Burnley, Bournemouth ok we can deal with. Tottenham, Man U, Barcelona ? well I know what most of you will be thinking and that is where I am at. I bet £1000 it is not 3 mins but I might be prepared to be £1000 that it could be 3 defeats. Ill go for 3 draws. It is NOT the ability that is lacking. It is the mentality and the tactics that worry us all as TH points out

Good result, average performance, as for regaining our finishing touch that remains to be seen, our most prolific goal scorers, Giroud and Alexis are still having a drought in front of goal, Giroud had one header on goal, Alexis shot over and forced a routine save from Boric, apart from that and the Alexis pull back that Giroud just stood and looked at neither threatened, yes Giroud did well in assisting Ozils goal so credit there but to say our scoring problems are over is premature, pity we havnt got adequate cover at right back as id like to see Bellerien played further forward I think he has the pace and ability to be devasting up front, he's faster than Walcott and unlike him his technique is good .

Listening to Henry before the game when talking about John Terry he said all true legends should have a place at the club when they leave/retire as they still have so much to offer, and he referred to two of our own true legends Tony Adams and Liam Brady also in that, I wonder what TOF thought of that, i'm sure it wasn't a dig, Lets hope Henry follows his own advice if he's installed as the new messiah and brings them on board, and hopefully he'll have no problem taking advice and listening to others more qualified than himself, unlike TOF we have now.

The only half decent player currently at Holloway's largest shopping emporium with it's very own soccer style team has to be the goalie who unfortunately is almost as old as the manager. OK - so no one's that old in football but for emporium soccer, having Wenger is like having our own Col Sanders though in this case we are talking thumb sucking good! Good news on the goalie front as Chesney is coming back because er Roma have decided he is pure pants. Having watched the City Leicster game, we need to play much better than yesterday to expect anything from the game. Vardy will be a menace to our defence, and like others have said, our midfield is not playing well. What's really bothering me though is the lack of world class players project youth has brought us, or said another way lack of development at arsenal. As I look at our squad, there are very few players who we couldn't improve on...

A much needed win but nothing to suggest we will get much at all from the forthcoming very hard away games. I continue to hope, but not believe that we will win the league. It was lost in the games we should have won at a canter if we are indeed Champions material - West Ham, Southampton, West Brom, Norwich. There's 10 points there that should have been in the bag. Let's not kid ourselves either: we are not "in the title race" because we have improved (as the AKBs would have use believe). We are only where we are because the usual competition have such awful seasons. Whatever happens between now and May the season will be spun as a great indicator of the team's abilities, when in fact nothing could be further from the truth. We have stood still while others have actually gone backwards. Perfect as far as the board and Wenger are concerned - no need to take gambles and spend money to get that 4h place. Near enough looks (yet again) like being good enough. Until we have, firstly, a board with footballing ambition and secondly, a manager with the same, things just are not going to change. Not even the mob from N17 finishing above us or (god forbid) winning the league, would shift that mindset. I'll keep on kicking every ball in every game this team plays, just don't ask me to buy into the management philosophy.

We need 20 points and weve secured 4th spot. if we do that i vote that we give Theo, Thomas R a rise and a bonus for being ''good guys''. 73 points will win the league this year. It is doable but right now I am not confidant that we are the team who can do it.

Tottenham are a vastly different animal now Westie and our record there this last 10 yrs is nothing to shout about. I think we ll beat Leics but the game at WHL will be a harder nut to crack than at OT for me. I think Utd will beat Arsenal anyway. We re more often than not beaten before we get off the coach there and its that fixture that generally looks after itself. It might be an idea to leave Wenger at home for the OT trip and let Bouldie take the team and see if we can break the cycle.

A must win Ed ? no disrespect but if that lot couldn't beat Bournemouth there was no hope, but i'm sure some would have taken a draw and a point at the start. It turned out more of a forgone conclusion even with our usual lapses of concentration/cockups as the mighty Bournemouth do what a lot of these newly promoted teams do roll over and allow the bellies tickled, allowing TOF's little technicians to indulge in they're favourite pastime of tippy tappy more often than not ending up back with the keeper from their midfield or going out for a throw in. Yes it's three points instead of one for a change and back up to third, and a decent display from the players, we are third ? as I thought the table was lying and we were first (not that it would have made much difference)as there was so much high fiving and fist knocking I thought we were top and had won it, maybe there was a trophy for getting back to third.

Can't believe Elneny is deemed not good enough to play ahead of Flamini. So much for thinking Wenger had actually plugged a hole in the squad for once. Anyway the win sets it up nicely for Sunday for a true 6 pointer. Lose and we may as well forget about the title for another season, even a draw will not be good enough. Two thirds of the season completed and still a minimum of 16 games to play. The hardest PL fixture on the horizon is the trip to OT, straight after playing the home leg v Barcelona. I believe we'll beat Leicester & the NLD usually takes care of itself. The Telegraph predictions are: 1st Leicester 83pts; 2nd AFC 81pts; 3rd TH 79pts; 4th Citeh 78pts. But hey, what do they know??

I wish someone would work on Chamberlain and stop him from losing the ball in key positions. Everytime he gets caught in possession it results in either a chance against us or worse still a goal. He has good things in his game but if he could play a bit more simple rather than feel he has a point to prove he would be a better and safer player - bit like Ramsey I suppose. As Kev says "job done" but I thought Bournemouth opened us up quite easily and I think yesterdays performance was certainly 2 of the 12 points Cech is going to save us this season.

My view of the game was that we were all over the place at the back ,weak in midfield and no striker to be seen. Was Giroud playing or was it a blow up doll impersonating him that was floating aimlessly about - it's amazing how they can get them to pull silly faces . Poor old Sanchez made a great old fashioned style dribbling run weaving past Bournemouth defenders - who were standing around like traffic wardens waving him on -he cut a peach of a pass back from the by-line only to see that there was no one there to tap it in. All in all though the Chilean looks to have lost some of his sparkle and it doesn't look like a fitness thing -in fact he was our most energetic player . The game against Leicester will tell us more. Leicester have only lost two games all season and boast a good away record-but one of their defeats was to us - albeit the scoreline flattered us .

The lack of identity over the last decade in this club is reaching proportions so entirely corporate that I cannot believe gooners who lived and breathed Highbury are getting off on this ****ing niceness! That some AKBs are loving it shows how near their Arsenal not Arsene experience was. as undeserving and as ordinary as Chelsea and the Mancs in some seasons past. Now there's a link.

I was happy that the Ox scored and I hope that is the confidence boost he needs. Those of us with kids know it's the old argument thumb sucking v dummies.I prefer dummies as it can be gradually taken away.If Arsene allows the players to take one on he can slowly reduce the need for it.I suggest allowing one only after halftime then reducing it to when the sub's come on at 70mins then hopefully take it away all together.Remember you can't take a thumb away unless amputation is an option.

Ramsey- MOM!!!! Bloody hell, the more I watch him the more I miss Carzola. Does anybody else notice how much we lack control of the midfield without Santi? Ozil might be the assist king, but Santi is the playmaker. This drab win over Bournemouth does not inspire me. I think everyone here will agree that it was an insipid performance. I want to see how we far against Spurs. They are the in-form team.

As you say Kev, job done. They type of game that Ozil turns up for, say no more. I d like the FA to intro a rule that means an automatic red card for thumb sucking. a great many of these footie players have 2 yr old mentalities, but ffs. What would Frank McLintock have said to big Raddy had he wheeled away sucking his f----g thumb!
