The way forward for Arsenal’s atmosphere is imagination

Anthems, flags, big screens and advertising hoardings. Some thinking outside the box on the theme of improving matchdays.

The way forward for Arsenal’s atmosphere is imagination

Ajax’s Amsterdam Arena – A decent atmosphere created with time and effort

It's very heartwarming that Gooners everywhere are getting involved in all the atmosphere related issues, particularly the Arsenal anthem idea. Democracy and the internet are a wonderful thing.

Perhaps it's me, but are a lot of the songs just a bit morose? Bearing in mind that one of the prime reasons for singing is to lift our beloved team to even new heights, can you honestly imagine, "Have you seen the old man kicking up the paper in his worn out shoes...." going to be a lot of use when we're one-nil down in a cup final? Poor little Theo will be sobbing into his Arsenal hankie and Reyes, if he were to return, would probably fall over and decide not to bother getting up, having completely lost the will to live.

A bit of wistfulness and melancholia isn't a bad thing, but it's got to be a song that is just asking to be belted out with some gusto. I have visions of this whole thing just petering out, I'm afraid to say. That would be a shame.

The guy who wrote in about scarves might be on the right track, in as much as giving people something to do at the same time, might make everybody a bit less self conscious and more vociferous. Has anyone attended a game at the Ajax stadium? They were in the same boat as us. They moved from a small atmospheric place into a huge concrete structure on the outside of town. Very smart, but a bit lacking in something. When I was there, they put out a little plastic flag on a flimsy plastic stick (Health and Safety!) on every seat. When the players came out, the PA thumped out some music. I couldn't tell you what it was, but the whole crowd started waving the flags in time with the music, a bit like demented conductors. I know it sounds like "the Last Night at the Proms", but everybody was happy to join in, and the combined effect was quite stunning. It might have been the passive smoking of all that wacky baccy behind me, but it felt like the whole place was rocking. Literally! There must be some song that lends itself to that. That way the singers and non-singers don't feel as if they're falling into two separate camps, which is where it all starts to fall apart.

Other ideas? Well, the big screens for the most part just sit around looking gormless during matches. Why doesn't some computer graphics whizzkid wire them up to microphones and a sound meter, so that the graphics change as the crowd's decibel level increases? The louder we get, the more different it looks. It could be a splash of colour. Likewise the electronic advertising hoardings. Every time we score, they should go mad! I'm sure the sponsors won't mind now and again as it makes people look, which is what they want, isn't it? I can't believe that in this day and age, you can't create any effect you want, electronically. It just takes a bit of imagination.

Failing all that, has anyone been in touch with Ray Davies? I would have thought a lot of the Kinks back catalogue would do quite nicely, thank you very much. Gooner. Norf Lunden boy. I'm sure he's full of ideas. But Roger Daltrey? Do me a favour! I'm old enough to remember him running round with the QPR boys!
