I have been thinking about Arsenal for some of it as I while away dull days at work. For the past two and a half years I’ve been travelling the globe, although I got back for the second half of last season. Most of my time away was spent in Central & South America (Colombians love Arsenal). While I was there I went to quite a few footie matches, especially in Argentina where ticket prices are incredibly between £1.50 - £2.
Now to say they are passionate, if not a little crazy would be an understatement. River Plate v Boca, Rosario v Newells and Independiente v Racing to name but a few, saw crowds that, whether their team were winning or losing kept singing their hearts out, jumping, waving flags etc. etc. which brings me to Arsenal.
While I was on my travels a friend looked after my season ticket, but I managed to attend a handful of games last season, my first being the Totts in December, when I was told to sit down and be quiet by fans.
At PSV fans were slagging the players off where I sat. As for Reading and Fulham at home, I could hear the proverbial pin drop - we are still Boring Arsenal, just not on the pitch these days.
What have we come to at Arsenal? I really didn’t enjoy any of the above matches - there is no fun watching Arsenal from the stands these days. It seems the board have tried all they can to eradicate atmosphere with high prices to attract better clientele (well, more corporate support). I do not stand in the way of the club moving on, but it seems to me Arsenal have slowly removed our history. As my mate said, you can’t buy history but you can certainly sell it.
My season ticket is in the blue quadrant. What????? As fans we need affiliation to our club, like an end, maybe a Clock End or North End. Why isn’t the clock inside the stadium, as for the f***ing badge, google ‘Melbourne Victory’ (in the Aussie A-League) and see their badge design. Where have all our songs and chants gone, none for Gilberto, Fabregas or Toure, just drones of ‘Arsenal, Arsenal, Arsenal’.
Just one section in the ground designated for singing (it should be the whole place) and now we have a white kit after various blue ones. Back in April I signed an online petition for reducing Premiership prices which was sent to all 20 clubs. Arsenal sent back a bulk standard email on the lines of ‘Dear Supporter, We are pleased to announce that we are freezing prices for the coming season blah blah blah.’
I wrote back saying what planet are you living on? I’m still waiting for a reply. The Mancs’ most expensive season tickets are still £40 cheaper than mine, which is one of the cheapest at Arsenal.
After all that I want us to have a great season, but I would be interested to see if we had an average season how many 60,000 crowds will turn up. For me they’ve almost priced me out and it hurts. Sorry for the moan but no-one at the club wants to listen. I’m going to give it one more season. I hope it gets better, but I can’t see it.
Lastly a massive thank you and we are gonna miss you to Thierry Henry, it was a pleasure for so many years. Just don’t knock us out of the Champs League!
